Workers respond to broken water main in front of French Hospital

UPDATE: A broken major water main left many homes and offices in San Luis Obispo–including French Hospital–without water.

At approximately 4 p.m., the water was turned back on. Johnson Avenue, however, will remain under repair into the night, said French Hospital officials in an e-mail.

The main, located on Johnson Avenue near French Hospital, broke at approximately 10:20 p.m.

There are reports of flooding in spots between the hospital and the downtown area.

French Hospital canceled all elective surgerys scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Johnson Avenue is closed between Ellie and Lizzie Streets and police are diverting traffic to side streets. Eyewitnesses report that part of the hospital parking lot seems to be cordoned off due to flooding.

Emergency officials declined to speculate as to the exact cause of the broken water main.

Officials are also saying it may take as long as six hours to replace the damaged water main. There is currently no estimation when city water will be restored.
