California law requires schools to teach LGBT history

July 15, 2011

Public schools in California will be required to teach students about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans starting Jan. 1 after Gov. Jerry Brown  signed a controversial bill on Thursday. [SFGate]

Social sciences curriculum textbooks now must include information on the role of LGBT Americans, as well as Americans with disabilities, though California’s budget crisis has delayed the purchasing of new books until at least 2015, the San Francisco Chronicle said.

“History should be honest,” Brown, a Democrat, said in a statement. “This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books.”

The governor called the legislation, SB48, introduced by Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, “historic.”

The law adds lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as well as people with disabilities to the list of groups that schools must include in the lessons. It also prohibits material that reflects adversely on gays.

Yippie for the LGBTQQCIPASA2UO crowd.

Some people think I made that up.

So long as it is across the board to support constitutional respect for all people , all human beings and not to glamorize any, but making it law in this way seems overly special interest and giving extra leeway to a select class troubles me.

Exactly, what benefit is their to pass a law to single out one group of individuals to exploit what they have done politically or otherwise. Who gives a rats behind and what difference does it make what ones sexual preference is when it comes to community service or contributions to our society, thought were all supposed to be equal?

V.O.T.E.S.

Gosh, if this keeps up and you add in Hispanics having more babies and civil servants drawing their pensions and taxes possibly increasing…. I’d be thinking about moving to Kansas or Alabama. Things are getting out of hand and that’ll show them

Todaze Trib.article: Latinos having 2 1/2 times more babies than sneak in ea. yr. Now we’re building expensive walls to keep them in appartently.

Please go!

That’s a reply? It’s a trib. article, my friend. When are you going to speak up and do some ignorance eradicatin’ ???

Fishing is great on Catalina Island and there are no colleges other problems that the mainland has. Guess I will move there. No cars needed either. And almost everyone receives unemployment checks so everyone is in the same boat.

Alaska has even better fishing and most people don’t want to freeze to death so there is a lot of space between the cities so why not move there. Wages are extremely high also. I’m not sure if there is an illegal alien problem or not. Doubt it, so why don’t all you hater’s move there? And I’ve heard that there isn’t any gay people that live there so there won’t be any textbook problems. Or who gets what credit. Might be nice to catch a 400 lbs. halibut for a change.

Oh, and don’t worry bout a thing if you move to Catalina & draw unemployment with everybody, I’ll be here workin’ to keep yer checks rollin’ in. Cool?

I had a business for 36 years so could never get unemployment, not that I didn’t need it at times. But I am quite sure people that do get it are very thankful during these times of slow down in the economy.

This is why people should take their kids out of the public schools: Taxpayer coerced perversion.

“History should be honest,” says Brown…

“It also prohibits material that reflects adversely on gays.”

Just not too honest.

Time to start demanding vouchers for those who will decide to send their children to private school or start up home schooling programs. By the way, do any of our deceased hero’s have a say in being identified as homosexual? Will they call Abraham Lincoln a homosexual or an alleged homosexual? How about the transgender. Will they identify men who used to pretend to be woman, like who? This will be an interesting circus. Why do our children need to know that some hero’s liked it both way’s, what purpose does that serve other than to teach blatant perversion?

Way to go Cindy! Keep it up, best and most truthful thing I’ve heard yet. I for one wouldn’t want someone to know I was trans….what. Is that someone on his or her way to becoming a man or a woman? I’m too old to know these things. Even using the word gay is a stretch for me. My grandkids jump on my patoot if I say queer, they say it’s an insult to gay people. I don’t mean it that way, that’s the word we always used, I don’t insult people on purpose. Call me anything just don’t forget to call me for dinner. I get testy if I don’t get my dinner on time. And my God, you don’t want to see that do you? You’ve heard the term hungry as a bear I’m sure. How do you know I am not the bear that ate the chickens? You don’t know. I think they may have put the wrong bear to sleep.

I think Gov. Jerry has made a huge misstake. Our famous ancesters do not want people to know they were trans…whatever it is or gay. Otherwise they would have made it obvious for the textbooks all ready. Who decides if they really were on that side of the tracks or not. Hate to see my ancester Buffalo Bill was a flaming excuse me, a gay person. This would burst my bubble. Even though I have great respect for anyone different than myself. God Bless everyone. Just wanted to share that with you.

Wow, this is a surprise, I didn’t think that Jerry would really do it. This just goes to show that Jerry is a strong leader that does what most of us feel is morally correct. Good job Jerry!

…and knows how to get the gay vote.

Most of us? Are you reading the posts here? YOU are pretty much alone on this. Morally correct would be to not make a spotlight of ANYONE’S sexuality. There is no need to share the sexuality of people in history with children. None.

Danika, the votes in this forum don’t represent the the people of Calif. As a matter of fact thankfully the votes in this county don’t represent Ca.. I wouldn’t call the 10 to 15 people that post here the mind set of the state. This is a very conservative area and the people that post here for the most part are very very ultra conservative.

The problem with the right wingers is that you guys don’t get it. Why do you focus on what they do in bed? If I think about SSB or Roger F. and sex in the same thought it makes me throw up in my mouth (eww, I’ll never do that again). The point is, stop thinking about what they do in bed and think of them as people not sexual objects.

Seriously. What makes a homosexual, gay, lesbian? Their third eye, their extra foot? The color of their skin? No…it is their SEXUAL orientation. SEXUAL. SEX. And not even I, in my own closeted little world believe people ONLY have sex in bed, Typoqueen. Or has Brown passed THAT into law and I didn’t get the memo?

What do you mean most? Sounds to me most people are against it. I have asked all the fishermen I know and they are pissed. I for one don’t think this is a good idea. Gov. Jerry has stepped on his tongue on this one. Thank God we do have safe-guards to prevent this from happening. People usually don’t want their closet emptied where every one can see all that they do or have done.

Typoqueen most times I have great respect and regard for your opinion but this time I don’t think you have thought this through.

California is all ready known as the home of a bunch of fruits and nuts why perpetuate it. I’ll bet the other states are laughing at us. With good reason I might add.

The only thing surprising about this is the Gov’s idea of what is fair and just. Let’s have a vote.

What do we expect when most of all the newly elected Sacramento politicians running California come from San Francisco or the surrunding areas (Brown – Oakland, Newsome – S.F, Harris – S.F. etc.). We got what the majority of the nitwits wanted and now we are paying the price.

It could be so much worse. We could be electing reactionaries from Southern California, specifically the chumps from Orange, San Diego and Riverside Counties.

And the chumps from Atascadero, Fresno and other conservative areas. Thank God there are two parties. I will stick to the trickle down economics thank you.

This is absolutely obsurd. Shouldnt they of had a ballot for the public to vote on? This Jerry Brown isnt getting any browny points from me.

I am damned happy I didn’t buy in to Brown’s campaign lies and vote for him. The guy must be related to Obama…

Brown has to be too old to hold office. He has lost his perspective. Or just never had it in the first place. My great great uncle Buffalo Bill came to me in a dream. He is really upset about this. He said he had friends that were rainbowish in the old days and they would prefer staying in the closet. Who’s to judge? Not me!! Bill is afraid of what his old friends are going to do if they “out” them now. It’s a cruel, crazy, world ain’t it.
