San Luis Obispo home damaged by fire
February 25, 2013
A fire at a San Luis Obispo home without a working smoke detector on Sunday evening remains under investigation.
A San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s deputy, who was the first on the scene, evacuated the five people inside the home at 4353 Vachell Lane and four others from a nearby threatened home. No one was injured in the blaze.
Firefighters arrived shortly after 7 p.m. to find two vehicles, a shed, a 600-square-foot garage and about 50 percent of the 2,000-square-foot house on fire.
Officials with the fire department estimated the blaze caused more than $350,000 in damages to the house, garage, vehicles and contents. Investigators determined the fire started in the garage, but not the cause of the blaze.
It took firefighters about 25 minutes to control the fire after the first 911 call. Firefighters spared three of the four bedrooms in the home from significant fire damage.
