Five Cities firefighters responded to the fire in the 2400 block of Mona Lei Court in Oceano around 8:30 a.m. Saturday. They found smoke coming from an attic above the home’s garage, where the homeowners had just finished using the blowtorch to fix pipes inside a wall.

The firefighters cut portions of the wall away and used low-pressure water to put out the fire. Fire personnel removed burnt drywall and insulation and melted ventilation pipes.

No injuries occurred during the blaze.

The San Luis Obispo County Building Inspector will follow up with the homeowner on usage of the house.

We really need a code enforcement and building inspection surge in Oceano.

This area has had way to much illegal building and repairs which place a lot of people at risk.

You must use a heat shield when soldering. Keep a fire extinguisher, a bucket of water and a rag, and a squirt bottle with some water. Spray down the area with a little water and then place the heat shield behind the connection. You can make a pretty good heat shield with some heavy duty aluminum foil wrapped around some wet paper towels if you can’t get a heat shield from the hardware store.

you see one of these stories about once a year. rocket science.

You mean that 40 year old wood is combustible? Geez, who’d a thought..
