California bans government display of Confederate flag

September 30, 2014

8858490California Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill into law that prohibits state government agencies from selling or displaying items containing the Confederate flag. [Mercury News]

Democratic Assemblyman Isadore Hall of Compton authored the bill after his mother saw replica Confederate cash sold at the Capitol gift shop. Hall says the state should not promote a symbol of racism that is meant to intimidate.

The ban does not apply to people protesting or entering state property. It also allows for the Confederate flag to be displayed in books and museums for historical and educational purposes.

Lawmakers say the ban does not violate free speech rights because it only applies to formal actions of government officials.

Why limit this to Conferate Flags, how about ALTO Signs and every other emblem not required to graduate in a California school? California has to draw the line somewhere because taxpayers have not passed by a 2/3 vote to fund everything.

slavery . this is the United States not be the divided States, the Confederacy was attempted division and didn’t work out for us ,we are all in a big Union now.

Oh yay

That doesn’t stop the Randians from believing that they are independent, uber-libertarian, supermen living in a mythical utopia called Jesusland.

California NEEDS A LAW to stop selling replica confederate cash. Try, if you can, to think of this NOT in racist (shallow) terms. Yes, it is a VERY pathetic “law” from very pathetic lawmakers.

roy….we are no longer called California. Please get with the program. We are no BANornia!

Sorry Banofornia!

Not only is the confederate battle flag a symbol of racism, it is also the banner raised by traitorous rebels against the United States of America.

No way should it be honored or promoted in any way.

It is a disgraced relic displayed by the same type of historic losers that their long dead great-great-grandfathers were.

You are approaching this completely wrong. It is not an argument about what is and is not racist; rather, the discussion should have been: Why was this one gift shop selling one confederate item (currency)?

By screaming racism out of the gate, you fall into their trap by turning off your mind.

The secessionists hoisting this rag were all guilty of treason against the USA, and they LOST !

Get over it.

The book Tom Sawyer has the N word in it – many times. Should it be banned in public libraries?

Based on Mr. Gov. Brown – Yes.

The N word started as a non-derogatory term, then inflammatory term, then racist term, and now a term of endearment for some (i.e. blacks). Pending who you talk to the term is acceptable or isn’t. Both sides would argue it has different meanings.

Well folks, the same goes for the confederate flag. No law is gonna change the way people feel. Just ask former NAACP President HK Edgerton who is a confederate flag defender. He and many other blacks know the truth rather than the ignorant people who gave the flag a bad name.

it has always been a derogatory word it was once socially accepted ,but always racially charged.

Yes! Savior Jerry will be on that next!

Although I am not a supporter of the Confederate cause and agree that the flag is a symbol of racism, I would not go so far as to say that the rebels were definitely traitors. It could be argued (and disputed) that the union leaders were traitors to the Constitution and it’s protection of state’s rights and that the rebels were trying to keep their legal rights (I stress legal because they didn’t really have any moral highground).

Pure codswallop and bathwaterism.

The secessionists were traitors AS DEFINED BY the CONSTITUTION.

They thought it was their legal right to own other human beings as property, commodities, and chattel.

That’s not a right, it’s a wrong.

They were wrong …and I guess, so are you.

In that sense, their violation of constitutional rights of others, I guess you are correct. But if you want to look at it from that angle, basically every elected official and most public employees are traitors as well.

Per the San Jose Merc.. The bill was introduced by Democratic Assemblyman Isadore Hall of Compton after his mother saw replica Confederate cash sold at the Capitol gift shop. Hall, who is black, says the state should not promote a symbol of racism that is meant to intimidate. The gift shop no longer carries the item.

This is how these fools spend their time and our money.

It really does beg the question: Do we need a STATE LAW to stop the state from selling anything “confederate” in a gift shop? By crying for a law, it really shows the shallowness of those governing. Obviously, we like to elect the least among us – and this is what we often get.

exactly. by selling the money are you promoting slavery and secession or presenting a historical item for purchase for those that might be interested in collecting a piece of history (like it or not).

Our society has gone from if you don’t like it don’t buy it or turn the channel, to legislating political correctness.

It’s beyond ridiculous.

Oh, not exactly, by your terms.

Beyond ridiculous ?

Ho hum..You invite ambiguity. So droll and unconvincing. Just an ordinary and dull bigot.

That’s what unreconcilable racists are…to me , and to many others.

You indict yourself.

Try to apologize or explain your blatant racism.

Double dare Ya !

Roy, you must live in Morro Bay?

So the Battle Flag of Northern Virginia emulated after the battle flag of St. Andrew whose stars represented the thirteen original colonies is now banned in the socialist state of California? Perhaps we should ban the history books that speak of half truths about Lincoln and the civil war and the media that continues the perception?

The flag with so much history and meaning has now become a rallying cry for racist and symbol of slavery and oppression by the NAACP. Neither should be correct…. but alas too late.

America is the only country that went to war with itself over slavery

yes over slavery………or was it over the 42% tariff tax the northern states Lincoln wanted? Extortion, commerce, $$.

Easy now, you’re not going along with the official story here.

*points* look everyone he’s a racist! (totally kidding)

Just another stupid, useless law.

Stupid and useless is subjective as may be applied to human beings in other circumstances.

I’m sure that you do not understand this, or even care.

More distractions from our lame legislators. How about solving some real issues?

all this stuff is a red herring

actually, i would have been shocked as well to see this. and my name is Jeff Davis. however, racism? i thought it was about economics. but really? save that stuff for the Dukes.
