Man killed in Nipomo hit-and-run

June 14, 2015

chalkA pedestrian was killed in a hit and run at Highway 101 and the Tefft Street exit in Nipomo on Saturday night.

Shortly after 9:15 p.m., a motorist reported what they thought was a dead animal on the highway. Officers arrived to find the body of an unidentified male in the southbound lane.

California Highway Patrol officers investigating the scene closed off one lane of the highway until 1:28 a.m.

CHP officers asked Santa Maria Police to be on the lookout for a damaged vehicle headed southbound. However, while one vehicle was stopped, it was not connected to the hit-and-run.

I think many are assuming a vehicle hit someone and took off. At that hour there are many big trucks and RV type vehicles coming through there and they quite possibly never knew they hit someone. Especially as they tend to stumble into the traffic lanes in that spot (another mentioned many cross right there).

It is becoming more apparent that when we think we see a deer smeared on the freeway, it may be a person. Changing times.

I have seen homeless people crossing 101 or walking on the shoulder many times. Why not use the bridge at Tefft Street?

I saw this, afterwards ..heading north. Traffic blocked on 101 south.
