Morro Bay Councilwoman Dawn Addis announces run for State Assembly

Less than two years into her first term on the Morro Bay City Council, councilwoman and Women’s March SLO leader Dawn Addis has announced she is running for a seat in the California State Assembly.

Addis, a Democrat and SLO County Progressive, is challenging incumbent Republican Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham for the 35th District seat. The district includes all of San Luis Obispo County, as well as much of northern Santa Barbara County.

On Thursday, Addis announced her campaign at a SLO County Progressives meeting. The gathering also featured SLO County Supervisor Adam Hill, whom Addis endorsed in his bid to keep his seat on the board of supervisors.

“My record is proven,” Addis said in her campaign announcement. “I’m ready to bring my passion and skills and my action to Sacramento.”

The Assembly candidate did not elaborate on her platform or explain policies for which she would advocate in the Legislature. Addis’s campaign website states she has advocated for increased housing, clean water, security, improved infrastructure, local jobs and economic development.

As a member of the Morro Bay council, Addis was the target of an angry constituent who sent her vulgar emails. Addis spoke out about the matter and Morro Bay police recommended charges against the man.

Addis has also had involvement in controversy surrounding the development of SLO County’s legal marijuana industry.

While a city council candidate, Addis was one of eight local politicians for whom marijuana mogul Helios Dayspring hosted a fundraiser.

Initially, Addis failed to report the fundraiser as required by law. However, after Cal Coast Times reported on the secretive event, Addis amended her financial discloure form to include Dayspring’s fundraiser.

Dayspring was then awarded marijuana dispensary permits by the cities of Morro Bay, SLO and Grover Beach, which each have council members whom the marijuana businessman supported.

Cunningham, who is running for a third term in Sacramento, was first elected to the Assembly in 2016 and then reelected in 2018. In the latter year, Cunningham defeated Democratic challenger William Ostrander 55.9 percent to 44.1 percent.

The primary election will take place March 3, 2020, followed by the general election on Nov. 3.

I think Dawn and Ellen will both be wonderful representatives for the majority of the population. People need to support people and not just number one. Is there any family members of yours living on some kind of assistance? People need it now and then. Good honest people, need help. I’m pleased part of my paycheck is going to help them. Abortion is an individual decision made by each individual woman. Marijuana is not a deadly destructive drug. It is a beneficial drug. California needs a lot of help, and people like Dawn and Ellen will help steer us in the right direction for our families, our environment and our values.

Several problems here Dawn. First, your so-called passion is self serving at best, your skills are zero, and your actions are Socialist. Electing you would be like putting another nail in the coffin of California. Those who profess to be wise, are proven to be fools. I believe that shoe fits you to a “T”.

Would you please explain how your report, referenced above, regarding the time you spent at the League of Cities Meeting, is beneficial to the citizens who actually voted you into your current city council position in Morro Bay? What, specifically, constitutes your “proven record?” Several of us are eager to learn exactly what you think that your accomplishments are, in detail.


Will your campaign duties interfere with your current elected office like those running for President? I hope that you will not be absent from your council meeting duties, and distracted from your work representing the citizens of Morro Bay.

Do you and your children want to brush your teeth with toilet water, when you have a desalination facility which can be pressed into service?

Are you planning a move out of the area? I wonder if you have read the attached documentation? Why are you ignoring the leaky sewerage?

It appears that the city’s employees do not have the citizen’s best interests in mind when they write the agendas and in particular wrote the recommendations above.


There has been little to no discussion at any city council meetings regarding any Agreement in Principle (AIP) for the Delta Conveyance Project (DCP). Why is that?


This surprise agenda item so neatly and sneakily inserted by the agenda writers does confirm that the City of Morro Bay’s interests are not being well served, or worse.


Councilwoman and Assemblywoman Candidate Addis, how does the transfer of ANY of the City’s State Water Allocation to the University insure a secure water source, for the people you are now being paid to represent?
