California considering reparations for slavery

October 2, 2020

Gov. Gavin Newsom

The state of California will consider issuing reparations for slavery to black residents. Gov. Gavin Newsom signing a bill into law on Wednesday that will create a task force to study the matter.

AB 312, authored by Assemblywoman Shirly Weber (D-San Diego), establishes a first-in-the-nation task force that will inform Californians about slavery, explore ways the state might provide reparations and make recommendations on doing so.

The task force will have a total of nine members, five of whom will be appointed by the governor. The state Senate president pro tempore and the Assembly speaker will each appoint two members to the task force.

“As a nation, we can only truly thrive when every one of us has the opportunity to thrive. Our painful history of slavery has evolved into structural racism and bias built into and permeating throughout our democratic and economic situations,” Newsom said in a statement. “California’s rich diversity is our greatest asset, and we won’t turn away from this moment to make right the discrimination and disadvantages that black Californians and people of color still face. While there is still so much work to do to unravel this legacy, these pieces of legislation are important steps in the right direction to building a more inclusive and equitable future for all.”

In addition to signing the bill on studying reparations, Newsom also signed into law on Wednesday legislation that aims to eliminate discrimination in jury selection. The governor also signed a bill that prohibits the use of race, ethnicity and national origin to seek or obtain convictions or to impose sentences.

I’ve always been a proud union worker and voted my paycheck by supporting Democrats. But I agree Gavin Newsome is WAY too far left. I definitely held my nose when I voted for him the first time and will not vote for him again in 2 years. I am convinced a Republican CAN again win the governorship in California but must have a great candidate. Not unknown stiffs. I have no doubt Kevin McCarthy for example would love to be president one day. What better stepping stone than being the governor of California? You know Gavin Newsome has presidential asperations.

I’m just glad that my family did not immigrate to the US until the early 1900s, so my taxes won’t go to this ridiculous idea!

Further proof that California has gone insane…

The left clearly can’t read a history book. California wasn’t a state during slavery, nobody living in California was ever a slave owner and no one living in California was ever a slave. Pandering to the idiot mobs.

California was admitted in 1850, according to my history book…

You are spot on.

They pander to the mob ahead of an election by “studying” reparations. This means a few jobs for some cronies who will find the problem is so complex that a commission must be formed (more jobs for cronies) and eventually they will determine any money is better spent educating young minds about slavery and racism (more jobs for progressive teachers).

This leads to state university courses such as, “Slavery and the Policing of America”, “Slavery and its effects on Climate Change” and “Slavery in the LGBTQ community in 18th America.”

Well dont forget the Native Americans and the Native Alaskans. I am in no way responsible for slavery and he wants us to pay for what people did we had no control over? GIVE ME A BREAK. Unbelievable. KMA

Just another unbelievable action in a state with one-party rule. No balance whatsoever. This is the dream of the DNC, to make the entire country like California.

I predict that if and when taxpayer funds are paid out to descendants of slaves it will end up in a complex court case.

Very few states have an effective two party system.

You obviously lack historical perspective with regard to California politics. There used to be a “tug and pull” in Sacramento between the two political parties. Extreme ideological differences existed but they were held in check, somewhat. That condition, that check on ideological differences, appears to be gone. Just a fact.

You’ve got to be kidding me.

Reparations?….Paid by whom?….I never owned anyone…to make me pay for it should be laughed out of court…Maybe Newsom needs another headline because he can’t open the state or put out the fires……inept comes to mind…..

Absolute waste of paid tax money!

It’s unfortunate that California has this blemish on its history….oh wait, California was never a slave state!

Newsom says, “ As a nation, we can only truly thrive when every one of us has the opportunity to thrive,”. evidently that doesn’t include “every one” that will be effected by prop 16 if it passes.
