California considering reparations for slavery

October 2, 2020

Gov. Gavin Newsom

The state of California will consider issuing reparations for slavery to black residents. Gov. Gavin Newsom signing a bill into law on Wednesday that will create a task force to study the matter.

AB 312, authored by Assemblywoman Shirly Weber (D-San Diego), establishes a first-in-the-nation task force that will inform Californians about slavery, explore ways the state might provide reparations and make recommendations on doing so.

The task force will have a total of nine members, five of whom will be appointed by the governor. The state Senate president pro tempore and the Assembly speaker will each appoint two members to the task force.

“As a nation, we can only truly thrive when every one of us has the opportunity to thrive. Our painful history of slavery has evolved into structural racism and bias built into and permeating throughout our democratic and economic situations,” Newsom said in a statement. “California’s rich diversity is our greatest asset, and we won’t turn away from this moment to make right the discrimination and disadvantages that black Californians and people of color still face. While there is still so much work to do to unravel this legacy, these pieces of legislation are important steps in the right direction to building a more inclusive and equitable future for all.”

In addition to signing the bill on studying reparations, Newsom also signed into law on Wednesday legislation that aims to eliminate discrimination in jury selection. The governor also signed a bill that prohibits the use of race, ethnicity and national origin to seek or obtain convictions or to impose sentences.

Reparations is nothing but a leftist dog whistle.

So as part of the initial study your first task is to determine who living in California now can trace their family roots to being a slave. That percentage of the population in CA is going to be very low. That is where you start. Orherwise it’s just crazy CA politics and the color of ones skin. Proly the Native Americans should be first in line

absolutely right! pandering for votes. period. must feel threatened by someone, maybe Trump, maybe Unions. MAYBE? AND THE TASK FORCE? HE APPOINTS THE MAJORITY?

get him out of here

Wait, I thought it was illegal to buy votes…..

Born and raised here, an 8th generation, something I was very proud of until reading this. Stop bending over to get your votes. Stop pandering to get those votes, just STOP already!

Great. I assume that those of us whose ancestors fought and died to end slavery in the civil war will receive reparations as well.

We the citizens deserve reparation’s for having such idiots in office.

More concerning is the last line of this story:

“The governor also signed a bill that prohibits the use of race, ethnicity and national origin to seek or obtain convictions or to impose sentences.”

This will create new legal grounds for challenging criminal convictions. “The jury convicted me because (Enter your race, ethnicity or national origin her).

The Governor and the legislature is doing everything it can to keep from incarcerating criminals in prisons and jails and this is another way to do it.

And here is the result of this type of action:

California is insolvent and our governor is exploring ways to make it worse. It’s what happens when it’s other people’s money.

Have you checked the national debt lately? The local, state and federal gov’ts are all spendthrifts. No fiscal responsibility whatsoever, unfair taxation, wasteful corporate subsidies, idiotic spending programs, and grifters everywhere

Even more of a reason for CA to remain well within its fiscal limitations…the impacts of the COVID shutdown have yet to be realized (reduction in tax revenue, costs associated with protests & COVID, $1 billion bogus China mask purchase, etc). The idea of expanding social programs & creating tax breaks for illegal immigrants (which he recently did) at a time like this is fiscally & politically irresponsible.
