Group wages battle against Glenn Beck

February 9, 2011

By LISA RIZZO

A group of San Luis Obispo County residents, prompted by last month’s shootings in Tucson, Ariz. that left six dead, has mounted a campaign to pressure local radio stations to limit what they call “hate talk.”

Since January, outspoken critics of the Glenn Beck Show began campaigning to local radio station KVEC 920 AM to change its programming. They initially contacted KVEC management and have progressed to asking KVEC’s sponsors to halt advertising until the nationally syndicated Glenn Beck program has been dropped from the station, which airs weekdays at 12 noon.

“We believe the violence is connected to the nasty rhetoric that they are supporting. They have nine hours a day of fanatics which is way too much,” said Pete Evans, founder of Alliance for Positive Programming (APP).

Another critic contends Beck’s incendiary political rhetoric is dangerous.

“The history of Glenn Beck’s incitement to politically-motivated murder of Michael Moore, Nancy Pelosi, Charles Rangel and others he wants to ‘beat to death with a shovel’ or ‘line up and shoot in the head’ is well-documented,” said David Broadwater in an electronic letter that is circulating to numerous local advocates, KVEC management and advertisers.

The Jan. 8 Tucson shooting spree that killed six people and wounded another 13, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), has prompted criticism of inflammatory language by some conservative talk-show hosts like Beck.

News media, blogs, and twitter have been rampant with accusations that conservative talk radio, particularly “right-wing rhetoric,” may have influenced the mentally unsound Tucson shooting suspect and have created a climate of hate in America. While investigators have yet to prove this theory, the shooting has prompted a new wave of backlash against extremism in conservative radio.

Evans said he would like the station to offer counter programming, such as the Clark Howard Show, a syndicated show about saving money and finance that the station aired for about a year and a half before it was canceled last July because of falling ratings.

Last summer, the station swapped Howard for Beck and within six months and the station’s ratings were back to pre-Howard numbers.

When asked for a comment by CalCoastNews, KVEC’s management did not respond.

However, KVEC talk show host Dave Congalton, who is also a contributing editor at CoastCoastNews, said that while he cannot speak for the station’s management, it is apparent that the Glenn Beck Program is widely supported on the Central Coast.

“It is not my job to defend KVEC programming,” said Congalton, who is in his 20th season on the air at KVEC. “We offer programming choices and the listeners decide.

“San Luis Obispo County overall is very conservative and conservative talk radio does very well on the Central Coast,” Congalton continued.

“In contrast, the liberal-oriented Air America station in San Luis Obispo limps along from year to year, barely registering in the ratings. What does that tell you?”

The alliance and its supporters plan to continue its campaign to persuade KVEC to remove Beck from its airwaves “due (to) his most explicitly documented record of advocating politically-motivated assassination.”

“This station runs nine hours of nationally syndicated loud and angry right-wing rhetoric every day, yet touts itself as ‘hometown radio.’” Evans said. “These talk shows often promote violence and would tend to convince the already unbalanced to take up arms against innocent people. We have seen this over and over during the past decade.”

Congalton argued the group is made up of “far left-leaning liberals” and has yet to make an impact. “I know they’ve contacted some of our advertisers, but we haven’t lost any clients due to this so-called campaign,” he said.

In a January letter, Beck defended himself against the backlash. “While Americans are grappling to understand the Arizona tragedy, the absolute vacuum of leadership on both sides is staggering,” he said.

“Far too often, we have seen in our schools and in our post offices, acts of violence from misfits of society. Turning these horrific events into an opportunity for a political attack is a very childish response to a very grown-up problem,” Beck said. “This is not about winning a political blame game.”

Beck continued by saying he denounces violence regardless of political motivation

Within the last few months the conservative commentator’s program has been dropped by several radio stations including one in Philadelphia where he got his start.

It tells me that yes, the conservatives ‘rule’ in SLO. Perhaps that’s why it was

chosen as “The Happy Place”? The less one thinks, the less one has cause

to be unhappy. Of course, the downside of that is the corruption that seems to run

rampant -which creates a wealthy class – who are really happy they have such

a dumbed down populace.

As for Beck? He’s a salesman who uses an outrageous script intended to

satisfy his followers’ need to channel their rage.

This works well because the rage must be re-directed to maintain the SLO status-quo.

I kinda think Beck will do his own burnout. And maybe one day, the political mix will

change, hopefully for the better good of all the citizens in “Happy Town”. :-)

“I kinda think Beck will do his own burnout. ”

Mostly agree with , I feel he will end up on the Current Channel Co-hosting with the Olberman idiot

What they will have in common is that they will both be gone and forgotten

The Current TV channel you reference is specifically a liberal, progressive entity.

No way Beck will end up there.

As for Keith Olberman, he can certainly be bombastic with the best of them – and he’s quite opinionated – but he is far from an “idiot”, unless, as I suspect, “idiot” covers a world of people with whom you disagree?

My remarks were tongue-in-cheek, mostly, except for the idiot remark….Olberman is and no doubt will always be an idiot. How else can one describe this Foxnews obsessed has-been? Didn’t get him far in the ratings game did it?

“Excluding Tuesday’s primary coverage, “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” averaged 477,000 A25-54 vs. 472,000 for the “Factor.”

Ratings are not a static thing – and O’Notreally- does well in them –

but Keith was not exactly a slouch. His old time slot’s not doing as well

without him.

All it says to me is that more conservatives watch people who tell them what they want to hear.

Is Glenn Beck Sinking?

Has Beck gone too far even for Fox News and his conservative viewers?

Since Glenn Beck launched his television show on Fox News Channel in January 2009, the program has become the premier conservative showcase for conspiratorial incoherence. But in recent months his ratings have taken a nosedive. Most strikingly, nearly half of his audience has disappeared in the last year. Has Beck gone too far even for Fox News? And how will Beck respond to his falling fortunes? Will he take a sharp turn toward reality, or will he double down even further into the paranoid world of nonsensical conspiracy theories that has become his signature? And, if so, will Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes pull the plug before Beck implodes on the air?

And that is how free speech works.

If there is not an audience large enough to support a program, it will fall by the wayside like most of the regressive, I mean “progressive” shows.

Change should not be brought about by opposing opinions demanding the government quash a highly successful program.

If there were many people that think the way the wiseguy does, there would be successful radio shows reflecting that point of view. This clearly is not the case. This is America, free speech and hands off government are founding tenants. A lofty goal we are quickly straying from.

The “founding tenants” ? Hope their house isn’t belly-up in the market.place of dreams. :-)

No, SLO, the right of “free speech” should not simply be doled out to those who are able to sell the most advertising.

A public airewave yes, a public broadcast station no! Last time I checked, this was still the United States of America, land of the free,,, If you don’t like what is on this station, move to another as we all have choices (or so we are told) and if you really want to dictate the programming, if it comes up for sale, buy it so you can put your own spin on it because it is your station and the market will determine what stays and goes. I am not a fan of Glenn Beck’s (don’t even get it really) or Rush, Hannity, etc. But I see little difference in what they are saying versus the hate Oberman, Maddox, etc are spurring on the other side. All these COMMENTATORS throw their hate at the oppossing parties and then it is your right to listen or not. Commentator, right and left spew their ideas and beliefs, because they are “commentators”. That’s how they all make their money, sell their books, shows, opinions, etc. As a spiritual person I don’t care for some of the Sunday morning religious programs on this station, do I think they should be removed? NO, I turn the station. For all the intelligence or lack thereof, I am sick of your right, my right, their right etc. when the truth is all rights are in jeapordy and have been for years, For the time being this is still the United States of America land of the free although getting narrow in that process. Use your heads and make your listening choices as you see fit, but please don’t make mine!.

Keep up the good job, KVEC. I really enjoy most of the broadcasts, especially Dave. What I don’t like I know how to change the channel… (I even remember when KVEC was a music station)… You have evolved based on community input, needs trends but you still own this PRIVATE station and I for one support your rights to operate it as you see fit within the FCC guidelines!

Native SLO

So, if I don’t like what KVEC is broadcasting, I should just start doing my own broadcasting, right? Well, unfortunately, the licenses for doing so are not available at this time.

The radio airwaves are a limited PUBLIC resource. So, if members of the public believe that resources is being polluted and squandered and used to harm our community, they have every right—some would say an OBLIGATION—to campaign to improve the situation.

If a man was standing in a public park giving speeches to children, encouraging them to partake of sex and drugs, he might have the legal right to do so, but others would have the right to find legal ways to prevent it from happening. And if local businesses where sponsoring that man, community members have every right not to patronize those businesses.

And thus, we speak out against the hate and violence preached by Glenn Beck, with the help of KVEC and the businesses that sponsor KVEC’s programming. That’s the AMERICAN way.

WiseGuy, your analogies are hilarious and weak.

“If a man was standing in a public park giving speeches to children, encouraging them to partake of sex and drugs, he might have the legal right to do so, but others would have the right to find legal ways to prevent it from happening.”

This absurd analogy you put forth actually does apply directly to Liberal Democrats. See this weeks LA Times article below where LA County wants to instruct kids how to use the drug Ecstasy at rave parties to heighten sexual sensations.

http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2011/02/07/buzz-kill-la-county-wants-you-to-take-ecstasy-safely/

You say: “No one has said anything about “silencing” Glenn Beck.” I say BS. If you would have your way, Beck would not be heard in our county on KVEC. (Silenced)

And I’m guessing you are all about Free Speech for killing unborn babies or the right for you to marry your boyfriend.

Face it. You simply do not agree with the message on the Beck show and do not want to hear it.

With the gist of your main argument, we would need to pull all the licenses of tv and radio stations that aired obama’s comment ” if they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun”. Irresponsible comments like that will incite violence like we experienced in AZ. Right???? Sorry, you have a weak and lame argument and are in a vast minority with you opinions.

We covered it

LA county is not the “Liberal Democrats” the crazy there knows no partisan bounds. speaking of Republicans

I respectfully disagree. You really think that conservative Republicans would promote information on how to properly take Ecstasy at rave parties?

Did you read the article? the public health people in LA are not the DNC. this is not a partisan political issue it is a county public health issue.

This is the way it is in our country. Its the good and the bad of it. The good is the freedoms we have earned and cherish and strive to maintain. the bad is we have to deal with pondscum like Beck whose only interest in any of this is the money he earns as his ratings increase. But thats entertainment in America. The man is sickly funny, I mean hes dumber than a houseplant but has fooled some of the people all of the time. A modern PT Barnum

Please don’t slander P.T. Barnum. Barnum was actually a very fine and interesting man and, contrary to myth, he never did make that quote about “fooling” the people.

This is censorship, nothing else. The Tucson shooting was an issue of a paranoid schizophrenic left untreated who acted out. Why aren’t these people crusading to help schizophrenics get treatment and for further research to help people with this condition. Instead they are wrongly using this incident to silence someone they disagree with. They can’t disprove or discount Beck’s opinions, so they call him a hate monger. This is typical left wing behavior that can’t be tolerated in our free society. Tell them to take a hike–with the left wing political group, the Sierra Club.

What does the Sierra Club have to do with this? How about we say that Glenn Beck “take a hike” with Osama bin Ladin and others who have vowed to divide America and spread hatred and animosity and violence throughout our nation?

The only people who will divide America is America’s people, you cannot put the blame on somebody thousands of miles away if even alive still. If you think Osama is responsible then it proves to many Americans are sheep for falling prey to anybodies words.

Shawna Ford and Jim Gilcrists

he used to have radio spot every day.

I am lucky, my radio has dial and an off button.

Mine has that kind of button also, but wouldn’t it be better if when you turned it on there were more choices of what to listen to? How much hate and anger and lying does our community need broadcast each day?

By the way, people CAN “disprove or discount” Beck’s “opinions”. It happens every day.

I don’t like to be controlled. I have the ability to NOT listen to Mr.Beck, if I so choose. I will not participate in trying to force someone, anyone, off the airwaves. We still have some semblance of free will in this country; we don’t need others to take it from us. We let our government do that, remember? People, this isn’t out Glenn Beck. This is about much bigger issues than him. If you suceed in removing him from the airwaves, another “Beck” will take his place. Gonna stop that one too? And the one following him/her? Where does it stop? And the bigger question, what does that make you all…?

I happen to like freedom. MY freedom. I will do all I can to keep what little of it I have left. Nuff said.

There can never be another Beck.

No one is taking your freedom away. Although I think that they are wasting their time, just as you have freedoms they also have the freedom to try and shut him down. It’s not the govt. that’s trying to get him off the air, it’s people like you and me. It’s no different then when the right try and boycott products made in France, try and shut down abortion clinics, etc,. That is their right. So you are in favor of taking away their rights because you don’t like what they’re doing. That’s exactly what those that wrap themselves in the flag do all the time and it’s so very hypocritical.

“No one is taking your freedom away”. Darned skippy they aren’t. Not as long as I have a tongue in my mouth, fingers that can type, and feet that can carry me to the places I want to go to discuss with others. I already can’t buy a soda in a vending machine in SF; can’t eat transfats, can’t smoke in public, and drive without a seatbelt on. But, as long as KVEC broadcasts Glenn Beck, I am free to listen to him or turn the channel. Freedom still contains the word “free”…

Please insert on to off in my last comment, nothing like sticking your foot in your own mouth, the difference is I will admit it , those in favor of hating Jews, Gays, Surfers, Democrats or just plain haterrizers, is I will admit the wrong I have made, Rush and the haters are in part responsible for the absolutely unexceptionable shape this godforsaken country is in.

Hope it gets better before they start screaming, screw it push the red button.

Danika, citizens have every right not to patronize businesses that sponsor hate radio programs such as those broadcast on KVEC. That’s called “voting with your pocketbook.” It’s an AMERICAN tradition.

A child may not be breaking any law if he craps in the public swimming pool, but others who would like to swim in that pool shouldn’t be blamed for wanting that crapping kid to stay the hell out of the water until he learns to control himself.

Of course, we can expect some people to say: “Hey, that kid has every right to crap in the pool. if you don’t like swimming in crap, just stay out of the water or find a different public swimming pool.”

Perfect comparison. And people, don’t forget who paid for that pool-all of us.

Danika, you are finally right about one thing, “out Glenn Beck”

The only Beck worth listening to is JEFF BECK.

I wish I had said that.

Thanks Zaphod always did like your views, the rich get richer the poor get poorer. pretty soon this will be Egypt and we will all walk like an Egyptian to the capital with the Army, Marines, Navy, Air-force, and the space aliens behind us. Change needs to come the rich are to powerful, for gods sake if the presidency wasn’t controlled by the CIA Rush Limbarf, could buy it, and the only good Rush worth listening to is Mahogany Rush.

Off topic a little but Bush is the Dope , weed is classified as a herb. Stupid war mongers all made money off everything from the middle east wars to the clean up in the Gulf spill.

BOYCOTT KVEC ,,, KAREN IS WAY BEYOND THAT TRASHY HATE STATION ANYWAY, GO KAREN.

Think how miserable it must be to be the KVEC ad salesperson who has to go around town here trying to drum up sales by telling business owners how great the Glenn Beck show is and why they should associate themselves with it. How long can someone last having to do that day in and day out? And what kind of business owner would believe any of that?

WiseGuy, this is not an issue because not many people in our community think like you. I have advertised for my local businesses on KVEC BECAUSE of the shows like Rush Limbaugh and Beck. These shows have much higher ratings than the liberal shows that don’t have enough listeners to stay on the air, locally or nationally. I would have wasted my ad $’s had I tried to support NPR. Talk about a whiney hate filled show! I would be proud to sell ads for KVEC and there current shows if sales were my profession.

What business do you own?

No cheap shots with user names please.Thank you.

Fair enough, my bad.

thank you
