Sign wars heat up in supervisor election campaigns

Update: John Brunsfield, a retired attorney, said he purchased and put out signs that say “Lynn Compton is a fraud.” Brunsfield said he is not affiliated with any campaign and put the signs out after receiving slate mailers from Compton that make it appear she is a Democrat.

“Compton is trying to fool the voters into thinking she is a Democrat,” Brunsfield said. “One said, attention AG Democrats, and said to take the flyer to the polls. It recommended all Democrats except for Compton.”

Original: It is less than a month to the November election and sign wars, mudslinging and character assassinations are in full swing in the battle for the San Luis Obispo County District 4 supervisor seat.

In Nipomo, Oceano and Arroyo Grande, hundreds of signs ask voters to select either Caren Ray, a sitting supervisor, or Nipomo businesswoman Lynn Compton. And now, dozens of signs are being placed next to elect Compton signs that say “Compton is a fraud.”

Compton supporter Cameron Smith confronted a man placing a sign on the property of a Compton supporter. Smith said the man claimed Compton, a Republican, had said she was a Democrat and that is why they are calling her a fraud.

During the primary, Compton’s campaign paid to include her in a slate mailer. Slate mailers often recommend a candidate of one party alongside prominent candidates from the opposing party. While legal in California, the mailers deceive some voters.

Smith said he removed the anti-Compton signs because it was illegally placed.

Typically, candidates get permission from supporters to place signs on private property. Campaign signs are not permitted on publicly owned lands such as parks or public right of ways like highway on-ramps.

Ray’s campaign has placed dozens of signs in public right-of-ways that have been taken down by city, county and state employees. Some of Compton’s signs have exceeded size limits and were removed by Arroyo Grande code enforcement.

Last month, the Ray Campaign claimed a planned fundraiser for Compton involving “hobo stew” showed contempt for the homeless. Ray supporter SLO County Supervisor Adam Hill chimed in, encouraging others to forward an email by Ray’s campaign treasure slamming Compton’s fundraiser.

The story went national and led to angry threats of violence.

Back in July, Ray said someone shot a BB thorough her window and she deduced from the angle of the hole in her window and the screen, it was done on purpose by a 6 foot or taller person standing in her yard. The supervisor said the shooting appeared to be politically motivated.

However, police officers said it was likely children playing with BB guns in a wooded area near the supervisor’s home.

Compton has slammed Ray on her voting record and argues the sitting supervisor’s vote on a legislative platform was an attempt to chip away at Proposition 13.

Meanwhile, both candidates are lining up support and gathering donations as they prepare for their seventh debate on Friday which is to be held at the South County Community Center in Arroyo Grande.

So does this mean I should cancel the order I made on Vista Print for a dozen signs that read:

“Karen Ray killed my Childhood Dog!”

Na…..just imagine the fun that would be…..

Was your dog hit by a naked runner?

Or a hobo?

miss my dog

Have to say that I doubt Caren had a role in this or even knew about it. She’s a smart woman and only an imbecile wouldn’t know that this idiotic stunt would backfire so badly. If it weren’t for the professionally printed signs it would look like a spur of the moment alcohol induced prank.

Mike: while I agree with most of your comments, I think this one is not off target. First, you statement that Caren Ray “She’s a smart woman…” may be correct, afterall, look where she sits today without ever winning an election. She might be smart but that does not automatically come with commonsense. First, what potential politician plus being a high school teacher would join a “hash harrier” sex/drinking open air running club, select a name club member name of “Copulator”, and then post on the internet your activity. Second, by association, she is connected and a sidekick of Adam Hill and that does not need any further explanation of anything and everything is fair game. Third, she did create the BB gun assassination story that was false. Then, she along with Adam Hill and Bruce Gibson voted in support of a Democratic Bill in Sacramento to reduce the 2/3 vote to reassess tax laws which would open the door to changes in the Proposition 13 landowner tax assessment. Then she claims she would never want to change Proposition 13 because she too is a homeowner although she owns a historical home and this change would have no impact on her current home property.

There are many more examples of her corrupt, evil, dishonest behavior put the point is, she would definitely pull this type of stunt without any hesitation and then claim her innocence. This is not beneath Caren Ray!

I just think she’s smart enough that she would have understood how badly this would turn out. But then again, I would expect that a lawyer would know trespassing is against the law.

This only turned out badly for Ray because Mr Not-So-Sly got caught red-handed. I’m sure Adams and McClish are thinking the same thing….if only we hadn’t gotten caught…

This slimeballl knew he was trespassing, just as Adams and McClish knew they shouldn’t have been in city hall, hence the fact they did not answer the door for police.

Too bad it takes getting caught for them to realize they made a bad choice, these people should know better.

i agree she is smart, very smart when it comes to manipulating perceptions. extremely smart. i see right though it though.

A smart woman who associates with Adam Hill, Bruce Gibson, and Tony Ferrara?

Hmmmm…

Well, there’s THAT….

the feel good crowd, tell everybody how great you are, things are, how much better your gonna make it…..lots of people buy it…..its the 80/20 rule.

agreed

City of Arroyo Grande published Special Meeting agenda for Wednesday at 9 am to contract with investigator.

Public meeting with public comment!

First a Saturday at 1pm, now a 9 am meeting.

Really?

Damn! You weren’t supposed to notice.

I suggest John Bransfield show up Friday at the South County Regional Center and make his claim to Lynn Compton’s face, but something tells me he won’t have the backbone to do it. He would rather sneak around and trespass on private property

I hope he does. She has paid out $20,000 for more deceptive slate mailers this time around.

By all mean you can show up too and ask her, but something tells me no matter what answer she gives you will not believe her explanation.

This too shall pass! Thank goodness Nov.4th isn’t far away.

You know, I really resent when people despise having to go through elections. This stuff is important and we (you included) fight over getting it right. Please just quit resenting that we have a choice in this country.

Amen

Two little girls pulling each others hair on the playground. You call that choice. I call it a disgrace.

i too cannot wait until after nov 4,

we need to tar and feather all those elected by November 5 to teach them some humility before they go about the business of stealing our money to line thei pockets and those of thei friends.

I think Lynn Compton has kept things above board, speaking to issues, and letting Caren Ray disgrace herself with mudslinging. Lynn Compton is a very classy person.

Elections are great, it’s the lies from the politicians you have to wade through that sucks.

Agreed. Besides, that’s when a politicians actions show you their true nature.

You should read all the propaganda being put out by Cambria CSD candidates Bahringer and Thompson. Follow the money folks and you can see who are Bahringer’s and Thompson’s puppet masters.

And then you have CCSD Board Member Amanda Rice who wants to eventually run for higher office (e.g.,Board of Supervisor). Anyone know her story from New Orleans?

Let me give you a little friendly advice Lynn. Never wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.

And wrestling with a hobo is much more classy.

Too bad you didn’t come to the event on Sunday MF, you would have benefited from the knowledge of the docent who spoke about the history of hobos and their part in Oceano history.

This site has become so partisan that it has lost all of it’s objectivity. If the shoe was on the other foot–Ray using deceptive slate mailers– the reaction would be quite different.

The slate mailers were/are deceptive.

Adam Hill was the first to use them locally. Remember Adam Hill, the sidekick of Caren Ray?

SLOBIRD, me thinks you are fantasizing (drool! drool!) about this sidekick relationship. How well do you know these two people? Apparently, not well.

balanced reporting leads to more credibility ,which every news outlet should want, leave opinion on editorial page.

I suppose it is a good thing he is an “Inactive” lawyer since he is a cloudy on legal issues.

Since he didn’t have permission to place the sign, was he not trespassing on private property?.

Funny that he and Ms. Compton have that inactive lawyer trait in common.
