Are immigrants to blame for California’s drought?

immigrationA statewide media campaign pinning blame for California’s drought on immigrants has kicked off a debate on whether state immigration laws have an affect on water shortages. [LA Times]

Santa Barbara-based Californians for Population Stabilization has long called for tougher immigration laws and stricter enforcement of existing ones. The group, which is known as CAPS, is now running television commercials arguing that California’s natural resources cannot sustain the current levels of population growth.

“If Californians are having fewer children, why isn’t there enough water?,” a young boy asks in a CAPS commercial that has aired across the state.

CAPS is also asking its 128,000 Facebook followers to “Like if you agree California’s drought could have been prevented with responsible immigration policies and limited population growth.”

Some academics and columnists have publicy agreed with the CAPS stance on the drought. Stanford academic Victor Davis Hanson wrote in a National Review column that California has well over 10 million more residents now that it had during the last drought in the early 1990s.

Hanson and others say California census data shows that 1 in 4 residents was born outside of the country.

UCLA astrophysics professor Ben Zuckerman said California’s rapid population growth is essentially due to people coming from other countries, as well as the children of immigrants. Zuckerman, who also sits on the CAPS board, says that impacts the drought.

“The larger the population of California, the more difficult it will be to deal with the effects of the drought,” Zuckerman said.

But, some drought experts disagree and point to other factors as causes of the drought.

NASA climatologist William Patzert said the drought is caused by meager snowpack and poor planning, “not because the immigrants are drinking too much water or taking too many showers.” Blaming the drought on immigrants does not fit the facts, Patzert said.

Others point out that the majority of the state’s water is used to support agriculture and that immigrants tend to live in multi-family dwellings, as opposed to higher-consuming single-family homes. Stephanie Pincetl, a professor at UCLA’s Institute of Environment and Sustainability said Californians would better served by tearing up their lawns than kicking out immigrants who contribute to the economy.

“Do we want to have economic decline?” Pincetl said. “Do we not want to have agriculture? Do we want to not have housekeepers?”

I remember when Spanish was a foreign languish and we had plenty of water. I also can remember when everyone worked hard for a living, we were thin and lanky and english was the spoken languish in resturant kitchens. Today we get paid well for doing little, are fat, lazy and spanish is what you hear in the kitchens. Does any of this have anything to do with our water shortage? Sure it does because we need more people, to feed us, cut our grass or do anything that requires swet. Sure there are exceptions, as in LOTTO but factually we are sluggards that need our immigrant support staff. Then there is Mother Nature who reminds us.


If CAPS, Hanson, and other externalizers are looking for blame and scapegoats, why not target a more obvious culprit: GRAVITY !


Water takes the path of least resistance, and seeks the lowest level. Must be a nefarious plot by gravity to help prevent people of all kinds from using the water we all deserve.


Or maybe we can should curse the weather god Jupiter for being so stingy towards us mere mortals !

Hard to know which of the over 40 Rain Gods from around the world who could be at fault, though the closest would be the southwest To Neinilii or Shotokunungwa..

They were here first, so they may not look so kindly towards non-native peoples whose ancestors moved here from somewhere else.


We are a nation of immigrants. If you’re reading this, unless you’re 100% Chumash, you’re an immigrant.


This outfit has a long history of immigrant bashing, but apparently never bother to look in the mirror to see that immigrant face staring back.

Any population control in California goes directly against biblical principles and should not be condoned, so saith our Savior Jesus the Christ. But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)


As our Hebrew God of our Christian faith so states, ALL WOMEN are to be submissive to the ruling man, and this means the making of babies to please our God. Besides, if women want to be saved, then they must be open to child-bearing, and if they don’t, they are not saved.


“Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.” (1 Timothy 2:11-15)


Our Christian God also promotes the concept of many children to a family so we’ll have many Christian soldiers in the future spreading the Gospel, praise!

Bottom line, TRUE Christians cannot support any population control whatsoever. Besides, this is all moot anyway because Jesus is coming soon.


No, but the leaders and the lawmakers who chose to either ignore existing immigration laws, or pass new laws that would address the overwhelming population growth while giving little or no concern for natural resource sustainability.

Who said anything about the best? Reality check for you. Go around your community and take a poll on who is doing the ag and who is doing the house cleaning and who is doing the landscaping.
