A high-speed chase on Highway 101 morphed into a roadside brawl near Camp Roberts that involved a CHP officer firing a shot at a suspect. The officer feared for his life after being attacked with a “shiny object,” according to the CHP.

The shot missed, but officers ultimately managed to subdue Kevin Michael O’Flaherty, 28. In addition to fighting officers, O’Flaherty allegedly tried to steal a CHP patrol car.

On Tuesday night, O’Flaherty was driving recklessly in a Toyota Land Cruiser on Highway 101 in King City, and he refused to yield to officers, according to the CHP. O’Flaherty then accelerated down Highway 101, and officers Greg Aeillo and Andrew Lamar chased after him.

The suspect fled on Highway 101 to around the Monterey-San Luis Obispo county line. There, he ran over a spike strip at the offramp by Camp Roberts.

O’Flaherty then exited his car and confronted the officers. A physical struggle ensued, during which the officers deployed their Tasers. The Tasers had no effect on O’Flaherty, according to the CHP.

The San Clemente man allegedly forced his way into one of the patrol cars and tired to steal the vehicle. He then exited the car, pulled out a shiny object and attacked one of the officers.

Fearing for his life, Aiello fired one round from his gun. The shot was aimed at O’Flaherty, but it missed.

The suspect then dropped the shiny object and resumed fighting. The officers stunned O’Flaherty again with a taser and finally managed to detain him.

Neither of the officers suffered injuries. O’Flaherty was taken to a hospital and then booked in Monterey County Jail.

Officers charged him with attempted carjacking, attempted theft of a patrol car, felony reckless driving, assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest. O’Flaherty’s bail was set at $30,000.

Seems you’ve gotten yourself into a bit of an Irish stew Mr. O’ Flarherty…good luck trying to get out.

Tasers initially had no effect on him. Wow! He looks like a big boy, but likely was also chemically aided in shrugging off a taser (the first time).

I wonder if he’ll realize how close he came to his life being justifiably ended and clean up his act. Probably not.

I remember being an admitting clerk in our local ER during my younger years and watching a patient on PCP rip right through the leather restaints as he was lying on his gurney. Super human chemical strength.

Someone needs more gun range time during the mandatory admin leave for the missed shot.

Behind that, good job LOE for temporarily getting that mad man temporarily off the streets.

Training is always important. But unless you have been there no training will prepare anyone for the heat of battle. Job well done.

Is it just me, or is there something VERY wrong with a society that allows a person to commit those crimes and then, after posting $3,000 with a Bail Bondsman, get released back to the streets?

With that whacked out mindset who knows what he’ll do next time.

My guess is from now on he’ll be more heavily armed, so he doesn’t lose the next battle.

If you think that bail is low, look at what our Sacramento legislators are now working on following the passage of Propositions 47 and 57. These is certainly more concern in Sacramento for the criminals then the victims of our once great State. Feeling more like the corrupt Mexican Government everyday!

I hope that guy doesn’t live in SLO County. I’d hate for anyone I know to run into him.

“The San Clemente man allegedly forced his way into one of the patrol cars and tired to steal the vehicle. He then exited the car, pulled out a shiny object and attacked one of the officers.”. Clearly in the article it states that he’s from San Clemente, so I’m sure you won’t have to worry about anyone you know running into him Ned.

Looks like the guy likes combining steroids and meth. He’ll end up dead soon enough. If he makes bail, he won’t come back willingly. The police will have to drag him back.

That’s exactly what I was thinking “Stunned”. 30k bail seems way too low for all those charges. Glad it turned out well though and nobody got killed.

Glad the officers were not injured and great job LEO !

Man what a fight that must have been. That’s a ton of charges for $30K bail!
