Assemblyman Jordan Cunningham released a statement Thursday following the passage of SB-1, related to tax increases for transportation funding: 

Today I voted against the biggest gas tax hike in California’s history. The fact is, taxpayers don’t have well-paid lobbyists in Sacramento, and protecting the interests of my community is my number one priority.

The Central Coast has a growing number of people on fixed incomes. For that population every dollar counts. Asking them to pay 70 percent more in gas taxes, and even more on car registration is not something I can stomach.

I proposed an alternative plan that would provide billions in transportation funding without raising taxes and makes transportation spending more accountable. Year after year, the state devotes nothing from the general fund for road repair and now they are asking the most vulnerable populations to make up for it – that is patently unfair.

Face it people, you elect numskulls to run California. With the exception of Mr. Cunningham of course. No, I talking Jerry Brown, Kevin De Leon, Kamala Harris, MAXINE WATERS. If you gave these people a trillion dollars to run California they would find a way to run a deficit.

The saddest part is, you’ve been conditioned to be silent and except this BS.

CURRENT GAS TAX

According to DMV there are 33,000,000 (33 MILLION) registered CARS in California. Assume that each of these cars is filled once a month with 15 gallons at $.50 tax per gallon which is $7,50 tax (minimum). That would be $247,500,000 in gas tax a month x 12 months for a total of $2,970,000,000 ($2.9 BILLION) annually, This does not include millions of trucks, RV’s, buses, motorcycles, lawn movers, boats, etc.


Then, you have 33,000,000 (33 MILLION) registered CARS in California. Assume that the average REGISTERATION fee is $125.00 per vehicle (minimum) x 33 MILLION cars for a total of $4,125,000,00 ($4,1 BILLION) annually. Again, this does not include millions of trucks, RV’s, buses, motorcylces, law movers, boats, etc.


Currently, for CARS ONLY TAX and REGISTRATION collected is $7,095,000,000 ($7 BILLION) annually! This does not include millions of trucks, RV’s, buses, motorcycles, law movers, boats, etc.


NEW GAS TAX (in addition to the current tax) FOR CARS ONLY

15 gallons of gas a month x $.12 per gallon additional tax is $59,400,000 ($59 MILLION) x 12 months is $712, 800,000 ($712 MILLION) annually


33,000,000 CARS x $100,00 assessed tax is $3,300,000,000 ($3.3 BILLION) annually


NEW assessment collected will be $4,012,800,000 ($4 BILLION) annually plus NEW gas tax of $712,800,000 added to our current rates for a total of $8,137,800,000 ($8.1 BILLION) FOR CARS ONLY!


Then add in the trucks, RV’s buses, motorcycles, law movers, boats, etc. and we should have golden brick roads.


But then, 25% will go to the train project, 25% to public transportation, bike paths, hiking trails, 25% will go to roads and highways (10% to engineers, planners, etc), 25% to the State’s failing pension plan and we will see a slight improvement. We are getting duped!


The best part, this tax will never go away although it states for 10 years only! Didn’t we hear that recently in SLO with the Sales Tax propaganda…


Scam again for the taxpayers and the Brown Moonbean legacy lives on… And now, he is studying polls for the Senate seat coming up. This from a guy that has lived his whole career off the taxpayers dime!


JUST THINK IF WE WOULD HAVE FALLEN FOR THE LOCAL ROAD TAX SCAM….

We have been paying gas and vehicle license tax’s forever and the Dems spend it on other things and now want more because they didn’t spend the tax’s where they were supposed to go in the first place. They will get the new money and put very little where it’s supposed to go.Most of it will probably go to that unbelievable stupid Dem train. How can you people vote these morons in over and over again???? Look at all the money being wasted on the on and off ramp remodel that should go to fixing roads instead of making the ground look better. At 65MPH I can’t see any difference from before. Total waste of money. It all comes down to give us more money and don’t ask how we spend it as we know best and you are just dumb taxpayers.

This new tax is for transportation, anything related to transportation. Our roads won’t be improved, new roads will not be built, resurfacing will still move at a snails pace through red tape hell. Nope folks this is to pay for the Brown train. He is determined to see the thing built and was running on empty in his piggy bank. If you want to really get ticked off look on line to see the arm twisting the democrats in the legislature had to do to get this tax bill to pass. California has the highest gas prices in the nation, food will go up utility’s will go up everything that travels the roadway will go up. This is a massive tax increase just shoved down our throats, it is outrageous but not at all surprising

They won’t use the money to fix the roads, it all smoke and mirrors. I’m sure they will use it to prop up the dying state retirement fiasco or the bullet train to nowhere…. It just complete and total corruption!!

Thank you for representing us. I’m afraid that we the taxpayer are losing the tax battle. It seems like every government entity is on the threshold of raising their fees and taxes. Here in SLO County SLOCOG attempted to raise our taxes too with Measure J. You too opposed that, thank you. How many different taxes will they keep putting on us so that they maintain the total and incomplete incompetency and corruption that exists in Sacramento?

They are causing the swamp to rise. Eventually the swamp will get to the spillway and all of us providers will spill over and get out of California.
