Lucia Mar parents launch recall campaign against three board members

Disgruntled parents have launched an effort to recall three Lucia Mar Unified School District trustees over allegedly taking too long to reopen campuses.

Lucia Mar students returned to campus in a hybrid learning model in late February and early March. Parents seeking a recall of trustees argue the hybrid model should have taken effect much earlier, and the Lucia Mar school board should have sought a return to in-person learning as soon as state guidelines allowed for it. Had the district applied for a waiver like some private schools did, Lucia Mar students may have been able to return to in-person learning sooner.

Proponents of the recall are targeting trustees Colleen Martin, Dee Santos and Don Stewart. Backers of the recall will need to collect 8,302 valid signatures from district voters in order to trigger an election.

On Tuesday, parents gathered outside the Lucia Mar school board office to protest the board’s handling of the return of students to district campuses. Disgruntled parents said the board’s actions are to blame for students’ poor grades, and they have created a system of “haves and have nots.”

The “haves” placed their children in private schools, while the children of “have nots” have fallen behind, parent Sandra Bocchicchio said.

District officials released a statement acknowledging the recall effort:

“The district became aware on Friday, April 30, 2021, that three LMUSD trustees, Colleen Martin, Dee Santos, and Don Stewart had received a Notice of Intent to Circulate a Recall Petition. As a public institution, we serve a parent and student population with diverse opinions on the issue of the timeline for school reopening. In its public meetings on the subject, the board has taken into account the safety of students and employees and followed all public health guidelines. Members of the public who are dissatisfied with the decisions of its elected officials have a right to seek to recall elected officeholders,” the district said in the statement.

A recall election could cost approximately $350,000, with the money coming from the district’s general fund, according to Lucia Mar officials.

School districts and the Teachers unions screwed over every kid who didn’t have rich parents. Those kids got to enjoy the branding of loser with all F’s. Way to go. Pat yourselves on the back progressives. Nice work…:(

That this group is represented by Ms. Bocchiccio is hilarious. Her son was an absolute terror in pre-school. Later in elementary school Mr. Bocchiccio was witnessed berating and swearing at a female first year elementary school teacher during parent teacher night. I guess the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

It is not a coincidence that the folks behind this campaign are only targeting 3 board members who are democrats. They are secretly advocating for taking public school funds and distributing them to privately owned charter schools. Classic bait and switch.

They complain about politics views of the board but only are using their political views as evidence to back this recall attempt. Their Facebook group comments supports my observations.

Looking at the profile and background on these recall folks proves they are anti- maskers, covid hoax believers, anti-vaccine folks, religious charter school advocates and Qanon believers. They are ridiculously upset the safety measures worked. One of their main people actually said she would be ok with the safety requirements only if more children died of COVID-19. i have the screenshots.

Seems like an expensive unproductive effort that has more to do with anger over no school sports, and proms than the greater good of protecting the entire central coast community.

Colleges and professional sports adapted and changed due to Covid-19 . But they don’t think a global pandemic should impact their children? This is just pathetic whining.

They could do more good by supporting an effort to get all schools kids and faculty vaccinated and safe. Instead this counterproductive effort will just waste taxpayer money . Those 300k in recall costs would be better spent going to our underfunded school districts.

Spending money to appease people who don’t understand or agree with basic medical science would be a waste.

Colleen Martin needs to go! She is the most corrupt person I know, very self righteous. Cheats the system to get what she wants (check her campaign strategies!) , and can not keep her liberal partisan thoughts to herself. Look at her facebook posts! I would hope someone representing all of the families of Lucia Mar would keep her politics to herself, and give a fair and non-partisan perspective. She does not listen to anyone, she makes her decisions on her own personal opinions. I would not want one of her caliber representing my child!

Where can I sign this petition? It has been very long over due. Colleen Martin and Dee Santos must go. We as rate payers have not been well served by this board or the teachers union. Our children must be back in school NOW!

I sincerely want to sign this petition please let me know where I can sign.

While they are cleaning house at the school board, they should get rid of Eve Doobler-Drew, She’s the one that repeatedly posted a bunch of Q-Anon lunacy as well as an anti-vax rant calling Melinda Gates “satanic”.

Honest question. Why all of the down votes about a recall of the Q-anon and anti-vax woman?

She was elected to San Luis Coastal School board. Start your own recall if you like.

At $350,000 for a recall the ‘have nots’ will have even less.

Everything that Dee Santos has touched turned into a Shitshow!

Failed Leadership at its finest!

Get rid of her as soon as possible
