This is not MB’s first garbage truck-on-pedestrian death. Years ago a driver backed over a man down at the Embarcadero. No one was at fault and I wouldn’t be surprised if no one is at fault here. Garbage trucks are covered in warning signs and backing-up lights and they give off loud beeps. The sanitation worker is cooperating so I doubt he did anything negligent. Probably feels horrible though.

How did this happen?….didn’t the driver realize he hit someone?…how fast was he driving towards a roundabout intersection?….the MBPD had better get in gear and slow people down…this town is too small and too crowded with tourists and construction vehicles to turn a blind eye to traffic violations….

From what I’ve seen and encountered myself; pedestrians, who do technically have the right of way in most cases, aren’t even checking for traffic anymore. More than a few times I’ve seen peds boldly just dart out into active traffic expecting everyone to stop or avoid them. No thought to whether or not everyone even sees them! The sense of invincibility and entitlement is really pretty astounding :/

Pedestrians always have the right a way…whether they are in a cross walk or not….

Actually they don’t, there’s even a violation called jay walking for crossing a road while not in a crosswalk. Why on earth do people expect cars to slam their brakes on anytime they feel like crossing the road, I always tell my kids pretend like nobody can see you when crossing a road, 7 year olds can grasp the concept.

Right of way doesn’t mean sh*t, if you end up six feet under.

A garbage truck weighs approximately 32 tons, considerably more when fully loaded.

The weight of a human would not be noticeable when driving a 64,000lb vehicle.
