The Plaskett Fire burning in southern Monterey County nearly doubled in size reaching 15,479 acres on Sunday.

During the day, the fire backed down to Highway 1. The east side of the fire gained the most acreage burning toward Fort Hunter Liggett. The Plaskett Fire also moved south towards Los Burros Road.

With no fire history in the area in more than 50 years, heavy vegetation is feeding the fire.

Evacuation orders remain in effect in Monterey County, with evacuation warnings extending into San Luis Obispo County. These areas include south of the SLO County boundary, north of Carpoforo Creek and Via Piedras Blancas, west of Green Canyon, and east of the Pacific Ocean.

Further north, the Timber Fire has burned 24,970 acres, with 21% containment and little growth on Sunday.
