The San Luis Obispo County Public Works Department has announced that construction began Tuesday on the Bob Jones Pathway Project that will eventually connect SLO to Avila Beach.

Currently, workers are constructing a multi-use pathway for bicyclists and pedestrians between the Octagon Barn around the southern edge of San Luis Obispo and Clover Ridge Lane. A future segment will extend from Clover Ridge Lane to the existing Bob Jones Ontario Road trailhead.

Officials awarded the $10.5 million contract for the project to Souza Construction. A federal Active Transportation Program grant provided by the California Transportation Commission is funding the project.

Construction is anticipated to last up to 18 months. During construction, drivers are asked to obey signs in the area of the project or to use alternative routes or modes of transportation where possible.
