California’s untapped $285.5 million

August 5, 2012

California auditors discovered an additional $119 million in untapped monies bringing the total to $286.5 million that lawmakers were unaware of while cutting government funded services and programs, California Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration announced on Friday. [LATimes]

The review of 500 “special” funds by state auditors found some accounts have significantly more reserve cash than what individual departments reported to the state Department of Finance. Some of the  monies were under-reported. Most of the untapped funds were dedicated to special purposes.

For example, the recent discovery includes about $30 million for health-care programs and almost $29 million set aside to reimburse crime victims.

On Friday, Brown, who had previously proposed closing 70 parks, suggested using $20 million in the newly discovered $54 million under-reported by the California Department of Parks and Recreation for matching private donations to ultimately keep the parks open.

While the under-reported cash remained untapped, the parks department claiming dire financial health was soliciting donations slated to help keep some of the to state parks scheduled for closure open, including Morro Strand State Beach campground in San Luis Obispo County.

Just keep giving money(taxes) with no change in the way the business is run is similar to that definition of insanity by Albert Einstein,ie.:Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Just nuts that it was just a huge unmonitored stash by good ‘ol Smokey. Even more crazy was how (and who) iwould eventually get their paws on it.

The first of many??

This money belongs to us, the taxpayers of CA. I suggest it be refunded to everyone who files a state income tax return. Funny, if we withhold money from the government, we can go to jail; if the government withholds money from us, it’s just business as usual.

Well said, womanwhohasbeenthere.

Disgusting…. your overly competent government at work.

Can’t wait til the government controls my health care.

Most likely the press conference was held at 5 PM on Friday.

This whole issue of tax increases is a joke. The new money is another reason to not vote for any new taxes and then you see where the nurse’s union gave $1 M and the Teacher’s Union gave $7.5 M to fight No on Prop 32 (The Union’s Paycheck Protection Plan). In 2005 the Unions defeated Prop 78 (similiar to Prop 32) a plan to reform California government with $54 M in donations – a good investment for them I would say. Do your research on this very carefully before the election!. This State is just so corrupt it is hard to believe we are not arresting someone everyday in Sacramento, oh yea, they run the State.

Welcome to economic calculation in the socialist commonwealth.

The whole world is going socialist and then will come the implosion.

Does anyone really think the taxpayer will find out when and where the found money goes ? Not in My lifetime !!!

So I’m thinking no government entity, department, agency, board, or group should get anymore money unless they open up their entire finances to a outside audit first, and the complete results are published. Since likely this can not be done by November, sorry Gov Brown, you get a big NO on more money anywhere.

Actually audits should have been done a long time ago for all.

So they find a little more than a quarter billion dollars and on the ballat come Nov. they want a sales tax increase? NOT!!

L.O.L. And Paso Robles wants a sales tax increase. Dont think its gonna work.! They will misplace the funds before they do any real good.
