Here’s a vote for public comment

OPINION By DANIEL BLACKBURN

As a general rule, there’s nothing in New Times’ Shredder column that’s worth reading, much less commenting on. Also, as a general rule, I don’t resort to name-calling in my writing.

But to outlaws like me, those rules are made to be broken.

This week, the newspaper’s Bible-toting editor, Ryan Miller, who hides behind a skirt of anonymity to pen the column, launched a diatribe about two local people who — gasp! — take the time to go to public meetings and comment on the goings-on.

He used adolescent pseudonyms, “Schmulie Schmacker” and “Schmeff Schmedwards” to describe Julie Tacker and Jeff Edwards, a pair of citizens who make the effort to question authority at every turn.

Truth be known, if there were more people like Tacker and Edwards, there would be one heck of a lot less corruption in this county. Yes, folks, it’s true — there are way too many crooks, embezzlers, thieves, and authoritarians running this county, and if you don’t believe me, just ask anyone in non-county law enforcement.

If Shredder would use his potentially-powerful clout to do something other than belittle folks who try to make a difference in the quality of governance, it might help make a dent in the culture of malfeasance that permeates local government.

Fat chance.

Too many public officials show disdain and impatience for speakers during public comment periods, mistakenly thinking, perhaps, that their own brand of hot air has more intrinsic value than that of members of the public.

But one would think that the media — no shortage of hot air there — would pull in the claws and be supportive of taxpayers who want to discuss their business with their elected officials.

Not petty putz Miller, who apparently gets his gospel from the likes of supes Bruce Gibson and Adam Hill, each of whom would gladly submarine public comment completely. (I use these terms to describe Miller not because I want to, but because in the interest of full disclosure, I must.)

It’s part of the climate around this county, helped to fester by the likes of Miller and The Other Paper, that citizens are excoriated for speaking out, while elected officials are tolerated, often praised, for crapping on public comment.

I doubt that Ryan Miller has ever spent a moment or two listening to Tacker or Edwards at the microphone doing their public duty. He’s more mouth than ear.

But I’ll go on the record here and say that I’ll take an hour of Tacker and Edwards before I’ll sit still for a minute of Supervisor Hill’s bumbling, bleary-eyed monologues — or read another word of Shredder’s silly efforts.

Ah, Steve Moss, why did you leave us?

Mr. Blackburn is way out of line attacking shredders religion. And I hate religion. But that’s a cheap shot. Julie’s a big girl and she can take care of herself. She got shredded, so what? And Mr Blackburn, you are also wrong about who the shredder is- I know who it is and it ain’t who you say. That dudes another zero though. As for Edwards, he made his bed and he has to deal with it. He bloodthirstily cut down trees and snidely bragged about the destruction. He got people fired from their jobs because they refused to slip into his bed of corruption next to him. Then he laughed about it. Jeff got some people so angry when he cut the trees at MDO they spray painted his name on cement foundations in the area. They later died and I atribute that death to Jeff Edwards. Sorry Jeff, you’re a likeable enough guy, but a bona fide POS. Hope you know what that means. Shredder had every right to say what he said because it’s true- Jeff ain’t out there doing goodie good activism. he’s out there for the most selfish of reasons and shredder is right, imagine the good that energy would do in the other dugout (nature). Now if you’ll excuse me I have to go water the 5 gallon bucket oaks Jeff used to replace an old growth forest.

Joey Racano

RIP Mike Jones

Clarification: I attribute that death to the stress caused by hating Jeff Edwards. I wasn’t insinuating Jeff killed anybody except a whole lot of trees and endangered butterflies. Have a nice day Jeff. Sorry Julie I still love you but dump that loser.

joey xoxo

Everybody experiences stress. How they react to it is the difference to whether or not their health is impacted by it.

The Shredder is Ryan Miller, that is common knowledge with many insiders.

As for claims that Dan Blackburn is attacking Ryans religion, nice spin.

Mr spiritpen (?) Ryan I presume.

It doesn’t matter whether Jeff Edwards is likeable or not, and whether or not Tacker is a big girl and can handle it is irrelevant.

The Shredder has the power of a column in a weekly independent news publication. As such, he should bring more professionalism to his work.

He makes himself look unprofessional and poorly supervised at best, and frightened and churlish at worst when he uses the NT Shredder column as a bully pulpit to attack political activists.

Wonderful commentary, Dan.

Isn’t Jeff Edwards the developer that wants to convert the Oceano airport into a housing complex or the such. Isn’t he the one who would make a forture exploiting that property that has been used for the good of the citizens of Oceano (the airborne citizens) He is trying to manipulate the system for his own personal benefit and to hell with the good citizens of the county. What’s to admire about that ?? Just another slime bag developer out for himself….Hmm he would fit right in as a County Supervisor. I say “Jeff for Supervisor”.

Sorry. A handful of well-heeled fly-boys having control of that property does not equal benefiting the people of SLO County.

Somebody please dig Steve Moss up and put a pen in his hand…

He could still do better than today’s Shredder!

Pffft ! Pretty simplistic article ( in NT ). Couldv’e been said in one paragraph. Much ado about the same old one-note song from JT that sounds like a blend of Yma Sumac and Yoko Ono. Chalk on blackboard quality, but still stultifyingly boring.

I can only conjure that Gadflies eventually get swatted.

The New Times SLO (esp.,The Shredder) should be read for entertainment, not for information.

The goverment-controlled, establishment-controlled radio, tv and print media of SLO County is too cowardly to print the truth.

North County Guy…AMEN!

The disdain for public comment isn’t just a county issue; Atascadero mayor Tom O’Malley and Paso mayor Duane Picanco often act like it’s such a complete hassle to listen to citizens’ viewpoints, ~especially~ when they don’t agree.

I regularly listen to the council mtgs every Tues on 1230am and can hear their audible sighs in their microphones when certain regular speakers reach the podium. It’s like their minds are already made up and they’re just suffering through public comment because they have to.

Well, the truth is, in most cases by the time an issue gets heard before the city council or the board of directors, the decision HAS been made. The “discussion” that occurs in front of the audience and cameras is largely for show.

Julies Tacker — in overturning the Five Cities Fire Authority’s (FCFA) tax (the assessment district) — that would have been imposed on Arroyo Grande’s, Grover Beach’s and Oceano’s property owners — was thorough, expert and relentless in serving the truth.

These attributes strike fear and disdain in Council and Board members who ignore her, where she gains respect from those who listen. She does her homework and she is to be praised and not ridiculed. Schreader’s publicizes Julie Tacker’s role while ignoring the truth of her dedication and excellent public service commentaries.

re: New Times

You can like the editorial content or not, but the fact of the matter is, their paper fits perfectly in the bottom of my bird cage.

Doesn’t fit as nicely as the Tribune.
