The heated race between Rep. Lois Capps and her challenger Chris Mitchum for the 24 District seat just got hotter with Mitchum accusing Capps of running a deceptive attack ad.

In the Capps’ commercial currently playing on several local stations, a 2012 statement by Mitchum is edited distorting what the Republican challenger said. In the non-edited statement, Mitchum said he will not go to Washington to fight for pork while Capps’ ad makes it appear that he said he will not go to Washington to represent the people of the 24th District.

“I do not intend to go to Washington to represent the 24th District,” Mitchum says in the Capps’ commercial.

In the un-edited version, Mitchum said, “I do not intend to go to Washington to represent the 24th District, to bring back baseball fields. That’s not why I’m going.”

In response to the ad, Mitchum sent a letter to Capps asking her to cease and desist running the commercial.

“Here at the Mitchum campaign, we know it’s up to us to keep the campaign clean, spot on the issues that affect every voter, and run our race on the merits,” Mitchum’s campaign staff says on his website. “The incumbent obviously does not think that way.”

Capps campaign spokesperson Chris Meagher told KEYT he does not see anything wrong with the ad.

Capps past year has been marred with controversy. The parents of the woman fatally injured when a legislative aide for Capps struck her and then drove away filed a lawsuit against the driver Raymond Morua, Capps and the federal government.

If you have nothing of substance within your soul then lie and lie and lie and lie. This women helped to give us the mess called Obama care. A school nurse helped write and push through this travesty of a health care bill. Send her home. Women are still getting paid less than men! well she has been in office for years and even was part of a majority for many years and still nothing. The state is under the most severe drought we’ve seen in quite some time. Ask her if she has done anything to lessen that pain and watch her squirm like a fish out of water.

Lois Capps entered the 105th Congress in March 1998, succeeding her husband Walter after his sudden death.

The 105th through the 109th Congress’ were all controlled by the Republicans ( 1997-2007 ). Only in the 110-111 Congress did the Democrats control ( 2007-2011 ). The 112th and 113th Congress have been Republican. The majority of 14 out of 18 years and seven out of nine terms have been Republican, so your assertion is baseless on its face.


It is a wonder that we finally got the start of a humane and modern health care act with the indefatiguable help of Lois Capps …given the outlandish and unprecedented Republican obstructionism.


Drought ? REALLY ? Perhaps you believe that Mitt Romney could have prevented drought or other weather phenomena by draping California in magic underwear !

Ah Slow up to your usual distortions. What could she do about the drought? REALLY? Do I have to explain how an elected person works for us? Do I have to explain that you plan by building water storage ahead of a drought in a state that is know for them? Common as usual, your partisanship and my guy is never wrong mentality is showing through again.

If anyone listens to political ads or reads the stuff that comes in the mail and believes

more than 1% (that being the name of the candidate), then you have proven why this

country is in the position it is in.


By definition, politicians lie (or at least stretch the truth to their advantage). That has

been the case, is the case, and always will be the case.


This does not infer that one should not engage in the electoral process and exercise

your right to vote. You just have to realize that you need to wear hip boots, make up your own mind, and vote – and hope for the best. But also have the knowledge that very

few, if any, politicians cares about you (unless you have lots of power or money).

As much as I do not like negative campaign ads, my suspicion is that this commercial is being paid for by the national Democratic campaign committee, and not out of Capps’ campaign budget. (I do not KNOW that for a fact, just my assertion).


That said, Chris Mitchum would be one of the worst representatives for the central coast possible. Even listening to the unedited remark, one has to recognize that Mr. Mitchum has an agenda that does not have the best interest of central coast residents. He has admitted that he is a “tea party guy”, but more likely he would simply snap into line behind Kevin McCarthy and the rest of the obstructionist Republicans in Washington that will do anything to discredit the Presidency of Barack Obama, even if it means keeping America from doing the best the country can do.


If you want to see more gridlock in DC, if you want to see every form of government assistance (except of course, tax breaks for the wealthy and powerful) if you want to see Social Security go away and you want to see America continue to spend money and blood protecting the business interest overseas, then by all means vote Republican.

I agree. I would rather stick needles in my eyes than vote for tea-bagger Mitchum, and I am a strong advocate for the California Covered program.


I believe Capps continues to be the best person for the job, and I will be proud to vote for her on election day.

Why do liberals feel so justified in heaping insults and vitriol on their opponents. Ms. Malone has again demonstrated this with her foolish “teabagger” comment. does she at least have the decency to apologize.

Bob your last paragraph is typical scare tactics of the liberals which you do oh so well. The other party is evil etc. Your party no longer works with anyone unless you agree. Ya you will say the conservatives but that is only the last ten years after the prior 40 of negotiating with liberals and then the conservatives getting beaten over the head later. That entire ad is a deception. If she wanted to tell the truth she could just say ” I vote how nancy pelosi tells me to vote.” lois isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed.

I am so excited to vote on Nov. 4th and will be voting for Congresswoman Capps to represent us. We are lucky to have such a special , wonderful person to carry our message to Washington.

I called Capps’ office to ask what the deal is, they referred me to 884-0202, Capps campaign office. Her congressional office has nothing to say about the ad. Lois is hiding under her desk.

Congresswoman Capps is the kind of government representative we wish we had more of! Everytime I read what she is doing for us , seniors in particular, I must say ‘thank you, thank you’, She is sincere, responds when I ask for her help and really means what she says when she promises to work hard for us in our big US Government. We are so grateful to her for running, and running and caring so much for all of us. Love to you Lois Capps!

Well I am glad she has responded to someone in a positive way. By any chance, do your positions line up very nicely with hers? Were your requests for some minor personal problem with a government agency that any smart politician would handle for the PR value alone?


I have tried writing her with detailed concerns about federal policies on at least 3 occasions. The responses I received indicate that she (more likely her staff) only figured out the general subject about which I wrote. They then pushed out what appeared to be generic position papers on those subjects instead of addressing my specific comments. I can handle a politician disagreeing with me on an issue or two but I would like to know that they at least read my concerns enough to understand them and respond specifically to them.

I also do not think Mitchum would be the best representative but Capps’ edited ad is about as low as you can go.


What’s even more alarming is that Capps campaign spokesperson, Chris Meagher does not see anything wrong with the ad.


WAIT, I bet Lois doesn’t even know the ad is running and her campaign staff are doing what they think is best. The staff probably runs every aspect of her political life anyway and she doesn’t have a clue and hasn’t for quite a few years.

What is ‘new’ about Mitchum ?

I coined the word/term “REPUKES” to describe these contemporary Republicans, because they constantly regurgitate the same old discredited bile. Much like a dog will lap up its own vomit only to spew it out again.


Mitchum uses the same playbook, buzzwords, false framing, and dumbed-down failed policies as hundreds of other know-nothing Republican politicians across the entire country. They simply insert their own photo into the downloaded RNC, Frank Luntz, Fox News PDF protocol.

It’s like they are all part of a Borg collective…programmed to drone identical platitudes.

There is much truth to what you say but if you changed the party to Democrats, Capps would fit the description just as well.

I respectfully disgree.


I would prefer Lois Capps to be more of a candidate such as Mike Honda (CA), Carol Shea-Porter (NH), or Alan Grayson (FL).

Still , Capps is far and away better than the mouthpiece and shill Mitchum that is indistinguishable from the others in the clown car of anti-civilization Republican zealots.
