A Grover Beach man murder his roommate and then set fire to their apartment on Monday, according to police. A short time later, officers tracked down and arrested the alleged killer in San Luis Obispo.

At around 6:20 a.m., Grover Beach police officers and Five Cities firefighters arrived at the 100 block of N. 13th Street to battle a small fire. Inside the apartment, officers discovered the body of the murder victim.

Grover Beach police determined the deceased person had died as a result of a physical altercation with his roommate, Manuel Jesus Perez, 41. Perez had fled the scene before emergency crews arrived.

After arresting and interrogating Perez, officers booked him into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of first-degree murder and arson. He remains in jail where he is being held without bail.

Authorities are withholding the identity of the victim until his family is notified.
