Hundreds show up in SLO for “Day Without a Woman”

March 9, 2017

At least a couple hundred demonstrators gathered in downtown San Luis Obispo Wednesday to participate in “A Day Without a Woman.”

Participants marched from Meadow Park to Mission Plaza, where they held a rally and a moment of silence. The event coincided with the United Nations-sponsored International Women’s Day, and demonstrations took place worldwide on Wednesday.

The “Day Without A Woman” also came less than one month following the “Day Without Immigrants,” a nationwide protest against President Donald Trump. As was the case with the “Day Without Immigrants,” many people skipped work on Wednesday.

Women were also encouraged to avoid shopping, with the possible exception of in female-owned businesses. At Big Sky Cafe in downtown SLO, male workers wore red shirts saying “a day without a woman.” Big Sky Cafe closed its doors last month for the day without immigrants.

Leaders of the day without women event said demonstrators were recognizing the enormous value that women add to the socio-economic system. Likewise, demonstrators were bringing awareness to female workers’ vulnerability to lower wages, discrimination, sexual harassment and job insecurity.

San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon, a feminist and longtime community organizer, released a statement in support of the day without women event.

“Today we take a moment to honor the women who surround our lives and celebrate their value in our society. We celebrate women as laborers, entrepreneurs, leaders and as mothers. This movement transcends politics and it goes way beyond this moment and this day,” Harmon wrote. “To be truly inclusive, the feminist movement needs to fight for both economic and social equality for women. It is not enough just to resist misogyny, we must also resist the deeper social problems that have normalized it. Looking to our daughters and their daughters as our next generations of leaders, we must all — men and women — stand against inequality and for the just future that all our people deserve.”

As a business owner myself taking the day off yesterday would have been downright irresponsible considering we have contracts and deadlines to keep. Not only that, what actual point is being proven here by having a n o t h e r “day without?” It’s just been trivialised now.

Well said, ccmom.

There are so many of these ridiculous events now; they’re pointless anyway.

And incidentally, if someone’s a white, conservative, heterosexual male–he’s demonized anyway. The whole “girl power” movement has marginalized men and made true masculinity almost a criminal offense.

It’s just become so silly now. The day without an immigrant cost Santa Maria schools some 400k on that day yet everyone will complain that they are underfunded.

How about a ” __________ (insert women, men, HUMANS, whatever) day.” A day where everyone goes out, does the job or duty that is their responsibility, acts kind to others and is a contributing member or society. A day where everyone tries their hardest to do the best they can at everything they do. Because I am sure am tired of all this entitlement towards complaining. I’d like to see more doing and skipping out on your jobs isn’t it.

$500K when both elementary and HS districts were combined.

Good Lord pasoparent. Chill the heck out. Your masculinity is safe in your mind. Relax.

Can you give us your definition of ” true masculinity”? I’d be interested in hearing it…

Thanks!

Good comment. Also the women who work the hardest and deserve more respect work in our stores, laundromats, restaurants, cleaning services, hospitals and nursing homes. I’m sure there are more including stay at home moms of small children. Non of them had the luxury of taking the day off. Thank you all.

I am disappointed that no one protested the protest with a “where’s the cookies” sign.

My compliment was meant for ccmom.

So women only have blue collar jobs as you describe, lol! You must of been born in the 50’s.

Your math is as bad as your attitude — wish I were that young. I have had the luxury of holding management positions but I know the women that I admire! Look around you boy and be grateful for the women who carry the heavy load.

Well put ccmom!

Love America and for the freedom to march and protest, however, need to know past history re the International Women’s Day which celebrated all over the world on March 8.

The earliest Women’s Day observance was held on February 28,1909, in New York and organized by the Socialist Party of America. On March 8,1917, in the capital of the Russian Empire, Petrograd, a demonstration of women textile workers began, covering the whole city.

March 8 was then declared a national holiday in Soviet Russia in 1917. The day was predominantly celebrated by the socialist movement and communist countries until it was adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

The Sandernistas are getting well organized in SLO County. And as I said, all have a right to march and protest. Just know the background of the International Women’s Day!

Part of their protest was not spending money. Oh no, please, don’t. I think we deserve the silent treatment too.

I’ll join in on the fun. How about ‘Day without a customer’?

lol

Why not? Pro-rate your payment(s) to your debtors (divide amount owed by the number of days in this month and deduct that amount from your normal monthly payment). Don’t shop, don’t go get fast food, don’t drive! No purchases for one day, none!

The effect of that would be heard LOUDLY!

Great Idea pi-on! When and where will you have this event start? Will it be a nationwide event or just a local one? Will you make sure it gets the appropriate press coverage? Are you gonna look for infrastructure support/donations? Are you lookin’ to have a staff? How ’bout t-shirts?

I have a day in mind; Black Friday 2017! How ’bout that?

Already had a number of shopping holidays due to illness so-request already granted!

I don’t do Black Friday, prefer Cyber-Monday.

Where have these people been?!?!

And, quit trying so hard to take credit for this idea. My pals have been doing this “Day Without Women” thing for years. Why do you think they play Golf?

I agree, they’ve lost me and out of town guests as customers.

Wage discrimination towards women is a myth. The study on which the myth is based didn’t take into account the differences in education, years of experience and hours worked, which influence earnings. This has been published in numerous well respected publications, but the liberals refuse to acknowledge it.

I have never eaten at Big Sky Cafe, and I am much less likely to ever do so, after seeing the picture accompanying this article. For crying out loud, drop the politics already, and just serve good food!

Besides, wasn’t it women who were supposed to wear the red shirts? Or have these dudes all “transitioned”?

I, too, will cross Big Sky Cafe off my dining choices. When I go to a restaurant I want good food not politics.

Have you been to Big Sky? If you have did one of the wait staff, a host or hostess, a manager or owner approach your table and ask what your political leanings were? Did the menu include a big blue ass on it? Are their napkins emblazoned with the DNC monogram? No? To all of that?

You would put a bunch of people out of work and close a business down because of their political leanings and or support for a cause? Yea, you would, huh? Typical dumb ass SLO trumpster shit!!!

Drop the politics? Yea, right! Politics are imbedded in every part of our lives now, especially with our current potus and his minions! You can’t get shit done without some partisan asshole walking in and saying it doesn’t fit their parties values or what the American People want (that alone is a crock of shit).

A woman’s place in society is anywhere she chooses to be, in any capacity she is qualified for with or without a man’s permission! It doesn’t take some politician to define that! No, It should be the demand and default position of every man and every woman in this country.

No, these “dudes”, as you call them, haven’t “transitioned” (even implying that they have shows either your ignorance or your intolerance!). What they are doing is showing their support, their solidarity, with the backbone of this country!

If that doesn’t speak volumes about a woman’s place in our society maybe a little more pragmatic approach is needed in your case…Women make up 51% of our population, they are the majority! If they ever fully realize that and use it to their absolute benefit, men like you Ugluk would be left behind!

Don’t be threatened Ugluk; women recognized as equals, equally important and equally capable, can only benefit all of us!

“You can’t get shit done without some partisan asshole walking in and saying it doesn’t fit their parties values or what the American People want (that alone is a crock of shit).”

I know, right? Please tell it to Big Sky Cafe while you’re at it.

Thanks!

I don’t live in SLO. Not now anyway, but the future is never set in stone…

No, those folks at Big Sky are American Citizens and not Amerikan Politicians and I encourage them to support and speak out on any issue they feel the need to, including supporting something that the alt-right/fact/constitutional crowd of SLO has a hard time digesting. No, excuse me! ESPECIALLY something the alt-right/fact/constitutional crowd of SLO has a hard time digesting!

trumpsters want to make America great again? What a crock! Some of those trumpsters there in SLO would not spend money with this business and would tell others not to as well, if that took what would happen? You’d close down a business, force it out of existence, causing people to lose their livelihood all because of a political/ideological difference of opinion? Yea, y’all would! And that is some sad ass stuff! You say just serve good food and leave the politics out of it as if you’ll walk in and their menus and napkins are embossed with the DNC emblem, the wait staff/host or hostess asks your party affiliation or give you their current political view of the country right along with the Special of the Day. Just some a-typical trumpster crap… Y’all must be proud…

Is it true the alt-right/fact/constitutional crowd of SLO will be having a march to the Big Sky chanting all the way…

“Lock ’em up! Lock ’em up!”

Y’all can only hope, right?!

“Drop the politics? Yea, right! Politics are imbedded in every part of our lives now, especially with our current potus and his minions! ”

Do you really believe it started with Trump? I actually thought you had some brains on you. Fool me once….

Here; let me make you a fool twice… (disrespect me and you’ll get so much more in return!)

I do have brains, not on me but rather in me… I just choose to mask it with cynicism and bull shit! You?

Nope, I don’t believe it started with your potus, AND, if you’d take the time to read any of my previous posts before spewing your ignorant based accusations you’d know that!

Laziness doesn’t get you the brass ring there pi-on…

Uh, excuse me Ugluk but I think your homophobe is showing. You may want to tuck it back out of sight again. It is not that becoming.

I guess it is hard to follow that men could support women without losing their manhood in the process. Or have it questioned by you.

The truth is I believe you’re smarter than that, so you must enjoy making thinly veiled gay jokes at other’s expense.

I bet you killed it in 7th grade….as the (cl)assclown.

“Today we take a moment to honor the women who surround our lives and celebrate their value in our society”

Really? Well our single mother neighbor had to miss a days work and give up a days much needed income because the pre school teacher decided to put a red T-Shirt on and take the day off with little to no notice. These things are never very well thought out, there is too much emotion involved.
