Santa Barbara plans to lay off 400 city employees

Santa Barbara administrators are in the process of laying off approximately 400 employees because of the coronavirus health emergency. On Friday, the city sent out the first wave of layoff notices.

The city is expecting a 25 percent reduction in revenue because of decreases in hotel bed tax and sales tax revenues. At the same time, the city needs to pay for essential services, including utilities, police and fire.

Employees likely to be laid off include parking lot attendants, library employees, after school activity staffers, and park and recreation employees. In addition, lifeguards and other temporary summer employees will not be hired at this time.

The city hopes to rehire many of the laid off workers in the future.

I say we stop facilitating people over 60 with pre existing conditions due health negligence financially, before any able body person who cares about their health and let Darwin run its coarse as it should. To stop this virus is a sad attempt at socialism in the worst possible way. So many who need real help go without, spending millions on soon to die is a joke. Said a many medical professionals, and sadly, will be the case, sooner vs later. You smoke, drink, and snooze; you loose. People should not live into their 70s and not deal with the flu, if they give a crap about their health, or are a minority. Diabetes type 2, you’re fat and lazy. Smoked too much, well too bad youre burnt out. Our geriatric facilitation is out of control. Any old farts who treated themselves badly thumbs me down please, and go quickly and stop burdening your family and society, you cost way too much and complain way too much, leave us here to live and not die with you.
