Officers leave crash victim lying in North County ditch for nearly 24 hours

April 28, 2020

Law enforcement and Cal Fire personnel inadvertently left the body of a car crash victim, a 25-year-old woman who was reportedly the mother of three young girls, lying in a ditch north of Paso Robles for nearly 24 hours over the weekend.

It is unclear whether Brittany Muldrow of Tulare died immediately after the car crash or whether she died while lying in the ditch in the hours following the collision. Investigators left Muldrow’s body lying in the ditch after failing to locate possible occupants of the vehicle around the crash site and after failing to get information from a severely injured survivor of the crash.

Shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday, Muldrow was driving a black Volvo sedan westbound on Highway 46 near Gruenhagen Flats Road at a high rate of speed. For unknown reasons, Muldrow lost control of the car, drove into the median, across two westbound lanes and off the highway.

The Volvo rolled multiple times down a decline, during which both Muldrow and 26-year-old Hanford man Najee Mims were ejected from the vehicle. Neither Muldrow, nor Mims was wearing a seatbelt.

Officers arrived at the scene and found the Volvo resting on its wheels about 100 feet over an embankment covered in heavy brush. Officers located Mims, who had suffered major injuries.

An ambulance transported Mims to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. Due to Mims’ state of consciousness, investigators failed to interview him both at the scene of the crash and later at the hospital, according to the CHP.

CHP officers, two SLO County Sheriff’s deputies and Cal Fire personnel conducted a search of the crash site area, but did not find anyone else,

Deputies canvased the scene using Cal Fire’s hand-held infrared camera in search of heat sources emitted from possible occupants of the vehicle. They did not locate any heat sources.

The CHP says an examination of the Volvo did not produce any physical evidence suggesting there was more than one occupant of the Volvo.

Late Sunday afternoon, investigators learned another person had been in the car. At approximately 5:09 p.m., officers returned to the crash site and launched another search.

Five minutes later, an officer found Muldrow’s body lying in a rock-laden culvert ditch under vegetation. Muldrow had sustained severe head trauma and was deceased.

The CHP say investigators initially failed to locate Muldrow because of the uneven terrain, thick brush, tall grass, limited lighting and the woman’s inconspicuous location.

Muldrow’s mother, LaSonya Muldrow, told KSBY she called the SLO County Sheriff’s Office over the weekend and asked if they had found her daughter. LaSonya Muldrow was told there was only one person in the car that crashed, she said. Then Sunday evening, deputies arrived at her Hanford home to tell her that her daughter had died.

LaSonya Muldrow is now seeking answers from authorities as to whether her daughter died because of the impact of the crash or because emergency personnel did not find her in time.

Brittany Muldrow reportedly leaves behind daughters ages six, two and six months.

It is unclear what caused Muldrow to lose control of her vehicle. An investigation into the crash is ongoing. Investigators say there is no indication alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash.

As tragic as this accident is, it would be prudent at this time in my opinion not to be looking for blame and give pause to think about family, responders who must be feeling deep sorrow for someone’s loved one lost.

It would be totally a different situation if no effort were made in scouting the area for other victims, but as reported efforts were made, now place ourselves in positions of those who missed locating the victim, ask how we would be feeing guilt if in that situation.

First responders , majority of law enforcement personal are ones wanting to help, of course there are officers who’s badges become to heavy, and others having to grow into them, let us not be so tainted by actions of a few paint all rotting apples.

There’s always two sides of a coin, and in this situation personally I’d give them heads up, no shame to be placing tail showing. Tragic, prayers to the family and all involved,

Why didn’t they find her? Doesn’t a roll over create the obvious condition of a “throw zone” where revealing debris such as a crack pipe or firearms should be searched for with careful walk and flash lights? The sun was up at time of accident anyway. Nice job, CHP. Did insect activity or wildlife activity further desecrate the remains? Probably.

Oh well, with three young children at home she had no business partying out of county like that. Wearing no seat belt means we didn’t lose one of our best smartest citizens that evening. Can’t wait for toxicology to come back. Stupidity leads to tragedy. And, very sad for her children.

I hope the family will request an autopsy by an independent source .SLO Sheriff’s Coroner office has had alot of problems in the past.

Why all the down votes? ID is making an accurate observation. Search previous Cal Coast coverage.

The down arrows are the SLO Sheriff’s employees. There was probably a memo.

What I can’t figure out is why they didn’t notice that the car was registered to someone (female) other than the person they found (male). It might be something to ponder over while you are at the scene.

Maybe she should have obeyed the stay at home order

My god. Maybe your creator should have given you a heart.

You are a gem.

That just might be the most depressing thing I have ever read in my entire life. It took five minutes to find her when they went back the next day??? Five minutes????

They day after, they knew there was a second person….not so the night before.

Sunlight is a big deal when your searching for something outdoors.

Easily missed, even with a lengthy search. CHP and CalFire will get sued though. Hopefully, the autopsy will show that she died instantly.

The fact the she didn’t have her belt on should trump everything. She died of stupidity.

Sounds like somebody needs to go back for training on the FLIR device.
