The San Luis Obispo Police Department is warning the public about a phone scam aimed at extorting money from local residents.

Scammers are calling residents and posing as police officers in attempts to extort money from them over the phone, according to the police department. Police say they will never call anyone and ask for a payment of any kind.

“Protect yourself, hang up and don’t engage with these callers,” police stated in a social media post.

On my iphone, if a caller is not on my contact list, it does not ring. I get a notification and the number that called me, if they wish to leave a message they can. That setting is: PHONE , Silence Unknown Callers (on)

As a result, I never get calls from scammers or solicitors.

I screen all incoming calls with Caller ID and Voicemail. Unrecognized callers don’t get answered. NoMoRobo is useful for screening incoming calls to a VOIP landline. HiYa is useful for screening incoming calls to a cellphone.

Just got off the phone after being convinced to donate a cool $500 to the Police Ball dinner.

Police always extort money in person not over the phone.
