Pismo Beach Mayor Ed Waage announced he will not seek reelection in November after 18 years of service to the  city. Waage spent eight years as a councilman and ten years as the city’s mayor.

I have achieved my main objectives,” Waage said. “I feel like the city is in great shape.”

The city’s new police and fire stations have a ribbon cutting on May 11. There is a new pier and plaza.

“We were selected for the second year in a row as the Best Coastal Small Town by USA Today and, more important, the feedback from our residents is generally positive,” Waage said. “Our businesses are investing in their properties as well.”

Perfect time to elimate the mayor position, switch to an odd number of council districts and useca rotating council chair position.

I disagree with the mayor’s assessment. The forest of expensive parking meters is a major deterrent for visitors.

Years ago, when $5 still had some value, I was forced to pay that much just to park for a few minutes. That experience taught me everything I needed to know about the “meter jungle” in Pismo Beach, and I’ve avoided it ever since.

More recently, during a trip to Pismo Bob’s, I was confronted by an array of shiny new meters where parking used to be free. My reaction was immediate: I wasn’t going to spend $5 on parking just to buy a $15 bottle of algaecide. Instead, I went home and ordered what I needed.

Those meters were, at the very least, an aggravating factor in Pismo Bob’s demise.

A job well done. Thank you for your years helping the Community.
