Parkinson tied to phony mailer

June 4, 2010

Members of the Democratic Central Committee contend Ian Parkinson’s campaign is trying to influence the vote by sending out phony mailers in an attempt to give the false impression Parkinson has the Democratic Party endorsement. [NewTimes]

A campaign consulting firm hired by Parkinson sent out the slate mailers to registered Democrats in the 2nd and 3rd supervisorial districts that recommend “the best choices for San Luis Obispo Democrats.” Along with a group of democratic candidates the mailer urges Democrats to vote for Republican Ian Parkinson for sheriff.

There are six Republicans vying for the non-partisan sheriff’s office and members of the Democratic Central Committee (DCC) said they have not endorsed any of them.

“The mailer was sent out under the name “Democratic Voters of the Central Coast” in an apparent attempt to make Democratic voters believe that it was an official party mailer endorsing Ian Parkinson for sheriff,” said DDC member John Barta. “Members of the Democratic Central Committee are upset that a campaign consultant for a Republican candidate would attempt to influence the future makeup of the Democratic Central Committee by endorsing some Democratic committee candidates and not others on the phony mailer.”

The mailer was paid for by Public Policy Solutions, a firm run by Parkinson’s campaign consultant Cory Black. The mailer was sent out by Democratic Voters of the Central Coast, a group that lists the same phone number as Cory Black’s consulting firm.

In response to the mailer, DCC member Pepper Hughes sent a formal complaint to the enforcement division of the Fair Political Practice Commission in Sacramento.

I can’t believe people are writing off Teixeira just because he’s not a local. Have you people read his bio? He’s got great qualifications. Check out his resume. Let’s see, he’s an INSTRUCTOR for:

Vehicle Code & Accident Investigation

Vehicle Code & Driving Under the Influence

Field Sobriety Testing

Drug Recognition

Bomb Search Techniques

Firearms

Motorcycle Operations

Dignitary Protection

Officer Safety Tactics & SWAT

Advanced Law Enforcement Dispatch

Domestic Violence Prevention

Hostage Negotiations

Active Shooting Response

Suicide Intervention, … I mean the guy can teach the whole department just about everything they need to know about doing their job and save our county LOTS of $$! Why should we hire a guy with less skills, only to have him hire teachers (probably Teixeira) to keep the department up on its skills? Makes absolutely no sense to me.

We’ll also probably save lots of $$ on law suits because with the INSTRUCTOR as their boss, there would be no reason for those out in the field to not know how to do their job correctly and professionally. I don’t think Teixeira will accept sloppiness on the job – it would reflect poorly of him and I don’t think as a professional instructor he wants that.

Plus, what other candidate, out of ALL the races, is willing to give back 20% of his salary to the community? Sounds like he not only has a genuine concern and is willing to put his money where his mouth is, but great leadership qualities as well.

Then there’s his Emergency Preparedness plan that no other candidate is bringing forward either. Again, a direct benefit to the community as we will be better prepared to handle a prolonged catastrophic emergency. This man is thinking ahead about what’s in the best interest of the community which I consider another sign of leadership.

Too many people blowing off Teixeira saying he’s not a local even though he was born and raised here. Bottom line: II want a leader:

– who thinks of others, not just himself (both Cortez and Parkinson have stated this job is part of their “career path”);

– who thinks ahead, not waiting around only to react to the moment;

– who actually has a plan(s) of benefit to the community (drug intervention & disaster preparedness), none of the other candidates have actually put forth a real plan for anything;

Please, America, you really do have to wake up.

All the old reasons for doing things aren’t working.

I think we need to step out a little and get what we need: a proven leader.

Plus, he’s an Oath Keeper, and if you don’t know what that is, check out http://www.OathKeepers.org

and no, it’s not some “extreme” group. It’s actually a very noble group. Be sure to check out the testimonies of current military personnel who have signed on and watch the video – very inspiring!

Parkinson and Cortez both know about the group and have refused to sign on – what does that tell you?

If you want to know what a real sheriff’s supposed to do, watch this vid I got off the link on the Waterfield article. This guy took the Clinton Administration to the Supreme Court and won!

The resume of Tex is a sure indicator of his skills as a traffic officer. I don’t see that he teaches courses in organizational leadership, budget preparation, personnel management, law enforcement futures, deploying technologies, peace officer bill of rights, strategic planning, nuclear disaster planning, establishing inter-agency collaborations, Skelly hearing protocol, grantsmanship or effecting cultural change within an agencies. We are not seeking the best street cop for Sheriff. We need the best executive manager to lead an organization into a modern and efficient service based organization. All of his illustrated skills are line-level or perhaps supervisory when we are reaching several more rungs up the career ladder. Tex should be proud of his highway patrol experience and not be disappointed when he draws a small percentage of votes for Sheriff. To criticize the other candidates who have actually done full service law enforcement and imply that it is no wonder the country is in such bad shape if we don’t vote for Tex reads like a cheap advertisement. Sorry, by trying to shove Tex down our throat you have driven many perspective voters away.

I would not vote for any candidate who is a member of this group.

In order to stay informed, I too went to the Oath Keepers site. Several objectives of the group are admirable but others are frightening. Their primary statement is that they “will not obey certain orders by the governement.” Peace officers never have to comply with unlawful orders but the more radical approach is something I would avoid. Now, a candidate affiliated with “Promise Keepers” would be worth supporting.

We definitely need to clean up our government starting locally.

Vote incumbents out.

Keep any new candidates who even faintly smell of corruption out.

Seems to me that I heard or read a story where Parkinson used deceit to gain his current position with the police department… This sure smells and sounds like a consistent story or set of actions on his part. Maybe he’s not what this county or the deputies need after all. I’ll look elsewhere for that position to be filled, as I’m not too sure he’s truly capable of honesty.

He apparently got help on a promotional exam from his lawyer brother, many of us thought that was improper and cheasy.

It is intuitively obvious to the most casual observer that if we want the corruption in our county politics to continue vote for Ian Parkinson and Bruce Gibson. They will continue the time honored practice of enriching themselves at taxpayer expense and creating a niche for their friends so that the dynasty can thrive. If we dont stop it this could last 1000 years. Its dirty politics and that i am used to….Its the fact that these scumbags blatantly insult our intelligence by attempting these deceptions that bugs me….More of the “i never inhaled” and “i never had sex with that woman” type of insult.

This is a drag to hear that Bruce has aligned himself with Parkinson. Sounds like he threw in his share of the expenses for the mailer, it sounds like they went 50/50 on it, if the reports I’m reading are correct. I campaigned for Bruce when he made his run for the BOS. What a disappointment.

Did you ever think that Bruce may actually know Parkinson and all of the other candidates. Maybe he made an educated choice based on first hand knowledge instead of just reading CCN everday for his education.

I absolutely think he probably knew Parkinson. I just can’t believe that Bruce would stoop to allowing Parkinson to pass himself off as an endorsed Democrat on a “phony” mailer with other Democrats. Apparently, none of the other Dem’s knew about it but there is an indication that Bruce and Ian are the ones that paid for it. The mailer has identified them with an asterisk as the candidates that are responsible for financing this great scam.

I love it, is this an indication of things to come?. I log on and open this story and I’m looking at Parkinson with a headline that say’s “Parkinson tied to phony mailer” and who is on top looking down at him…. CORTEZ , with a flashing banner, “Joe Cortez returned a Million $$ back to the taxpayer”.

Oh Yeah, You just gotta love it.

I notice that Parkinson claims that he didn’t know this, just like the other candidates didn’t know. I can understand why the other candidates didn’t know, they had nothing to do with it. What’s Ian’s excuse? Wife didn’t tell him, manager didn’t tell him? Oh Yeah, You just gotta love it..

“…The mailer was paid for by Public Policy Solutions, a firm run by Parkinson’s campaign consultant Cory Black….”

The New Times story this post claims to be linked to states that “The mailer was paid for by the Democratic Voters of the Central Coast, a group that came into existence after filing a statement of organization on April 23. The filing lists a Kristina Calkins as the committee’s principal officer, yet the phone number listed for the group is the same as that of Public Policy Solutions, Inc.—the political consulting group employed by the Parkinson for Sheriff campaign.”

So where did you get “The mailer was paid for by Public Policy Solutions”…?

And, hotdog, don’t you want to tell us where you got this dribble: “Since none of the others on the ballot paid for it then Parkinson must have footed the bill and known all along.”

If you have been diagnosed, please follow the recommended treatment regime. If not, start with an OCD specialist. Seriously

Wait4It, Just exactly what is your non stop complaint about? Do you believe that PPS,Inc should be distanced from DVCC? Do you think they operated independently of each other? I can only assume that you don’t believe that these phony mailers were paid for with Parkinson’s funds or were directed to be paid for with Parkinson’s funds through PPS. Who do you think put the money in the DVCC account ? Do you think it was done by the same firm that opened it? Who do you think used those funds to pay for the mailers?

BTW, The person who pointed out that this is a news brief is correct. I don’t think Karen is even the one that puts up the news brief’s. As far as I know she sticks to investigative reporting as she is the only licensed journalist apart from Ramos. Regardless, a brief is a brief. It doesn’t matter if they don’t go into all the exact details, that’s why they point people to the article that they are alerting you to.

I got another mailer yesterday calling itself a Guide for Democratic Voters.

It endorses Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer on one side and a number of candidates on the reverse side, including Bruce Gibson and Ian Parkinson. Both those, as well as several others are listed as having helped pay for the mailer.

Oddly enough, Yes on Prop 16 is also listed as having paid for the endorsement. Isn’t Prop 16 the PG&E backed initiative on municipal power? Isn’t that also something Gibson just voted to oppose as Supervisor?

Politics sure does make for strange bedfellows.

Does it say anywhere who paid for it or who sent the “Guide”?

I am registered Independent, and got a similar one, all Dems + Ian. I should have saved it to compare to the one my wife got (registered Dem).

I will bet anyone any amount that Gibson opposes 16 (it is a total scam to protect the monopoly pg and e has). If Bruce signed on it was probably before the others did and he was not informed he would be sharing a ballot with the crooks.

A huge problem here is the greedy pigs who put these things out. They are probably operating in the gray zone between unethical and illegal behavior. Society has lots of loopholes that creeps take advantage of, plugging those holes bring us all the rules everyone complains about but what else can we do with so many shysters among us?

What we need is campaign literature put out ONLY by the candidates (no crummy slates, no other groups) so everything can be traced to the candidate.

So is Cory Black running Bruce Gibson’s campaign this time?

There is a Cory Black in the book and Gibson should be easy to find, ask them.

Sure, let’s just ask them! Read the articles in New Times and Tolosa Press – it’s a shoulder shrug-fest. A nice little piece of “don’t ask, don’t tell” politics. Cory, sure he might tell you but he has nothing to lose but more power, control and future clients.

Ooops, got another one in the mailbox today – they are a fetching pair and both have lost my vote.

There are actually several mailers with Parkinson AND if you read the fine print it says that the mailer was only authorized and paid for by those candidates or issues with an asterisk by their name. You should ALL note that on 3 of them that I was lucky enough to track down have both Ian P and Bruce Gibson with asterisks by their names. So why doesn’t someone ask Bruce Gibson about it and why Ian wants to be tied to him. OR, does Bruce really not know and just that desperate. Both of them are looking more and more stupid. Question is, why is Parkinson taking all the heat when Gibson likely knew what the situation was.

Slate mailers are a bad way to “inform” voters.
