Poll: Newsom has 9-point lead over Maldonado

July 10, 2010

A new Field Poll shows that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom currently enjoys a 9-point lead over former state Senator Abel Maldonado in the race for lieutenant governor. [San Francisco Chronicle]

The poll shows Newsom leading Maldonado, who was appointed to serve as lieutenant governor last spring, by 9 points, with 23 percent still undecided.

However, the Field Poll also found Newsom has higher negatives than Maldonado, who served the Central Coast in both the State Senate and Assembly. More than 40 percent of those polled expressed a negative opinion of Newsom. The number jumps to 66 percent among Republicans.

“It’s still early. Relatively few people are aware of any of the candidates except Newsom,” said Field Poll director Mark DiCamillo. “His lead is based on name recognition – it’s not really a level playing field yet, but it will be before we get to the election.”

Newsom’s challenge, according to observers, will be to define Maldonado before the Republican can introduce himself statewide to the voters.

Gavin should be elected, because he has shown a real concern for Californians by preserving funding for battered women shelters in San Francisco. These shelters are absolutely essential to stop battered women from being killed. Schwarzenegger, Shriver, Maldonado and Whitman could not care less whether battered wives live or die.

That’s Newsom’s claim to fame? These battered women would no longer be killed if they started packing heat. It’s a no brainer and they don’t need my tax dollars except to help them arm themselves.

The only thing more depressing than Maldonado in the Lt. Gov’s office is Newsom. Maldonado might have treated his previous positions as political stepping stones, but Newsom hasn’t even bothered to venture out of the Bay Area.

Instead, Newsom comes off as John Edwards’ twin, separated at birth, with a deficiency of integrity and self-importance securely intact.

Well, I beg to differ.

I’m voting for Newsom, not Arnold’s twin. Maldonado and I go way back. Back to the days when he was on the Santa Maria City Counsel. He used to sit there, head propped, eyes closed, apparently asleep when issues were before the counsel. He didn’t ask questions. But, he “woke up” in time to vote, and gave his already determined reasoning that usually was bs. He was doing his best back then to get the Mexican and Hispanic votes to keep him in office. He made a lot of long standing business owners upset at the preferential treatment he gave to his “friends.’

Ask any woman in the room with him how they are treated. If you’re at all pretty, he’s got eyes for you. Even if his wife is there. I don’t want another Arnold in office.

Maldonado represents those who can vote him to the next level as fast as he can go. Fake smile. Check it out. He’s got an agenda, and it’s called, “What can I do for Abel Maldonado?”

Newsom represents everyone even if it makes him unpopular.

More of the same? Maldonado.

Real leadership? Newsom.

Fix the headline. His name is Newsom.

fixed, thanks.

Oh Lord help us, isn’t SF big enough without those whack jobs foisting all their extreme lefty idea’s on the entire state? Open the boarders, come one, come all, it’s all free.
