San Luis Obispo County healthier than most

May 11, 2012

San Luis Obispo County is ranked the 13th healthiest California County out of the 56 ranked in an annual report by the University of Wisconsin Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

In California, Marin County is ranked the healthiest with Trinity County coming in last.

The Rankings used criteria including death rates, health factors such as drinking and smoking, pollution levels, access to medical care, and economic and education factors.

SLO County ranked healthier than average in air quality, educational indicators, a physically active population, and fewer smokers.

On the non-healthy side, SLO County residents are heavier than average drinkers and have more than the average number of deaths from auto mobile accidents.

In addition, California has a significantly higher number of sexually transmitted diseases than the national rank of 83. California ranked 399 with SLO County coming in at 235.

“California has a significantly higher number of sexually transmitted diseases than the national rank of 83. California ranked 399 with SLO County coming in at 235.”

These numbers or ratios don’t make sense or give direction when you consider there are:

196 Countries in the world

50 States in the United States

58 Counties in California

478 Cities in California

What is striking is something I heard on radio initially advertising a product just approved by the FDA (A self home test kit for VD / HIV) and then conveying that “80% of sexually diseases carriers do not know they are infected”

Looks to me like we work hard and play hard. Between our populous achieving above average educations, working out at the gym, growing gardens and hiking, of course we wind down with a few cocktails at the end of the day, we earned them . Yes our accidents are nastier than most, alcohol = nasty car accidents.

None of this surprises me but whats with the sexually transmitted diseases? California is high in STD’s overall, however when it comes to SLO County and the education per capita, we don’t seem to be so smart about those diseases? Over 100 less educated communities have less sexually transmitted diseases than we do?

Ummmmmm I wonder if that’s why they call us a bedroom community?

Bad news for the oppression in a sunset crowd. Back to the red leg frog scam.

This must be a tremendous disappointment to the Air Quality Control Board and the no growth advocates who like to paint a different picture…

Truth hurts doesn’t it boys and girls?

The reported air pollution/particulate matter days in San Luis Obispo County were reported as 0. What does the SLO Air Quality Board say about this? Mistake? Did SLO County cheat to look better in the survey? Are they giving locals a different figure? What about smoke from wild fires and what about the dune area?

Something is wrong here.

“On the non-healthy side, SLO County residents are heavier than average drinkers and have more than the average number of deaths from auto mobile accidents”.

Did we miss the boat on putting two and two together? heavy drinkers, car accidents and lord knows how many wine tasting facilities and breweries. Its getting pretty disgusting that this county cant do anything without alcohol being part of the venue.

To doggin: Your’re right, and let me be the first to say that chocolate does not go with wine. Anytime people try to convince you that a certain wine goes well with a certain chocolate, just taste it and you’ll be able to think of something, even water, that will go better.

Chocolate and wine is yuk! to me.

Try Tobin & James, dessert wine “Liquid Love” with a little semi sweet chocolate bits, yummy yummy. Chocolate is a delicious compliment to many red wines. It’s just a matter of taste, “gib me that chocolate”. ;)

Don’t forget the cigars there Cindy, that’s part of healthy SLO life too ya know…baaaaaa..baaaaa… LOL. Theres only thing that tastes shittier than wine and chocolate and that’s beer and chocolate. Coming soon to happy county… the first annual weed, whites, wine, waves and wicked women event.

Beer & Chocolate?????? yuk, yuk, yuk. “Gib me them”, pretzels, potato chips, hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn, buffalo wings (with ranch) and stuff potato peels ;)

Oh yeah, and a frosted mug.

Dont forget corn dogs :)

So many thumbs down..looks like the drunks are running the asylum after all.

“SLO County ranked healthier than average in air quality…”

And this despite that controversial “Dune” dust….

I always heard our health insurance was higher here than anywhere in California because of all the neck and back surgeries done in this county. Is that no longer the case? If it is still the case doesn’t that say something about our “healthiness”?

That was before the wine industry took over as the most lucrative industry in SLO county. Matter of fact I seem to recall a story here about how many unnecessary back and neck surgeries took place in our county.

Go Mustangs!!!
