Scouts’ gay ban may be costly

boyscoutsA current ban of gay members of Boy Scouts of America will be addressed by the California Legislature by seeking to remove the organization’s tax-exempt status.

A bill called the Youth Equality Act, sponsored by Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Long Beach, passed its first committee hurdle as it made its way through the Senate Governance and Finance Committee on a 5 to 2 vote.

The proposal would remove tax-exempt status  from any youth group shown to be discriminating on nationality, race, religion or equal orientation, but was originated because of the Boy Scout policy. It now heads for the Senate Appropriations Committee for review.

Lara’s bill is the first of its kind to be presented in the California lawmaking body.

I don’t like the Scout’s discrimination against gays or atheists but I don’t think the government should be in the business of penalizing them for it by revoking tax-exempt status. Are they prepared to use the same tool to micromanage every tax-exempt institution (including churches and many social organizations) that have “discriminatory policies. If they insist on doing that, maybe they should just do away entirely with tax-exempt status for all organizations.


The scouts are already hurting financially because of the public response to their policies as they stick to traditions that are no longer widely accepted as “moral.” This is too bad because they are a very good influence on young boys in many other ways. The state government needs to let the public slowly sway them towards a new course rather than shoving judgment down their throats.

I think the government should ABSOLUTELY be in the business of taking back a group’s tax-exempt status if the group turns out to be practicing bigotry.


I see this as having the potential for ground-breaking legislation, and future rulings against other organizations that practice bigotry.

Mary, it works both ways. You could turn in the Daughters of the American Revolution(you have to trace your heritage to someone who came here before the revolution to be a member) and I could turn in La Raza (still claiming to be the superior race).


You could turn in some fundamentalist Christian Church or a Mosque (that doesn’t support gay marriage) and I could turn in the Episcopal Church (courtesy of the left wing that makes political statements).


So, what happens to freedom of speech and freedom of religion when the government goes after organizations they feel are bigoted. Do we just have one government approved youth group? What happens to individual freedom and liberty. Does it disappear because we have to look at the “greater good”.

I agree that the BSofA should voluntarily withdraw their own tax-exempt status, and not force the government to do it for them.


If the BSofA wants to practice bigotry, and believes they are morally correct to do so, then they should put their money where their mouth is and pay their own way.


I wouldn’t count on getting an uptick in donations, to any significant amount. Many organizations, especially after the LATimes wide-reaching series of articles on how the BSofA actively worked to protect pedophiles in their ranks, refusing to require fingerprinting for FBI checks for new volunteers to rule out those with a history of pedophilia convictions, and facilitating relocation of pedophiles to new BS troops by helping in the coverup of their past acts of pedophilia.

First, I don’t give a damn what two consenting adults in the privacy of their environment. I care very much when 1) Georgetown University, one of the oldest private Universities in the United States, a Catholic University, that has a Newman Center (Catholic ministry centers at non-Catholic universities found throughout the world, Cal Poly has one) is being picketed to have the priest in charge of the center removed because of his anti gay statements. 2) gays are now soliciting to have fertility procedures built into all our insurance policies because they need it to reproduce together. I just don’ want to pay for two men or two women to have a baby. You are not infertile, you are not physiologically designed to reproduce. I don’t care that gays have children, but I don’t want to pay for their school, meals, before/after school care, phone, computer, insurance, etc. – this includes my feelings for heterosexual as well. Anyone want a baby, go for it, just don’t ask for my money. I’ve been in the pain of it.


This California proposed law will be interesting to watch as it includes transgender as well as gay and lesbian and will affect sport programs, and all other organizations, and yes it will eventually be imposed on the churches. But, then again, government needs every last penny that they can suck from every person, corporation, group, organization, religion, cigarette, wine/liquor, gun/bullet, immigration fee/permit, etc. Wherever the government can get it, they want it. We all have to share the pain and give more, and then some more.

Actually BSA is not a “Christian organization”, Cindy. There are Muslims, Mormons, Buddhists, etc involved in Scouting. PP5 is correct. Both of my boys are in scouts, and there are religious medals for most all religions (even “Scientology” *shudder*). I’ve never heard them swearing to God, but it is in the scout oath:

On my honor, I will do my best

To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law;

To help other people at all times;

To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.


No “Christian” God, but definitely NOT for atheists, as they’d likely have an issue with this. Then again, atheists do not attend temples, mosque, synagogues or churches… by choice; they can participate in non-religious or even atheist-only groups. I would fully support a group that was atheist-only, or GLBT-only – even though I do not morally support them, they have a right to exist and function. And I’d be a fool to try an legislate them away.

Big Brothers Big Sisters ordered the checks for all volunteers starting in 1986. Boys and Girls Clubs of America recommended their use the same year.

Scouting officials argued that background checks would cost too much, scare away volunteers and provide a false sense of security. They successfully lobbied to kill state legislation that would have mandated FBI fingerprint screening.

The YMCA and the Girl Scouts joined with the Boy Scouts to fight the mandatory finger printing in 1986. That was a mistake.


The Big Brothers organization that was heavily hit by pedophiles because they allowed a one on one relationship (the Big Sister program was in its infancy)would have gone under at that point because of the rampant pedophile activity. They welcomed the fingerprinting program–to their credit.


The pedophile history of the YMCA and the Big Brothers/Boys Club has not been made public by court order. I contend that the YMCA did not keep records during much of their early history. On the other hand, I’ve never personally heard of pedophiles in the Girl Scouts.

P.S. The difference between the Boy Scouts and other youth groups is that other groups, once the problem was outed, at the very least, started fingerprinting their staff and checking the FBI database before they allowed them access to the scouts.

Some of them went through FOUR troups, sexual assaults in each, and each case getting recommendations from the scout troup from which they resigned.

1. Pedophiles desire sex with children. They may have their preferences for one gender or another but, if the pickings are slim, some pedophiles will “switch ranks” and sexually assault children from the other gender.

The scouts are NOT anti-pedophile. They FOSTER pedophilia by the way they treat the pedophiles in their ranks….which is, basically, give them a free pass.

By far, males are the victims of pedophiles. By far, pedophiles are HETEROSEXUAL males.


The issue is not sexual frustration because an adult heterosexual male can’t find a date. The issue is an adult heterosexual pedophile male who has unmonitored access to MALE children.


Pedophiles are interested in children FIRST. That is their top priority. They may have preferences, depending on their sexual orientation, after that. Many pedophiles may prefer a certain gender for their victims, but are willing to “cross-over” to the other gender if their preference is not available.


Institutions like Boy Scouts of America and the Catholic Church attract male pedophiles. Part of the reason is because male pedophiles know they will have unmonitored access to male children.


However, part of it is also because, until lately, these pedophiles knew Boy Scouts of America and the Catholic Church would not bring charges, would try to dissuade the victim from filing a formal report to the church or to the police, and so the pedophile, even if caught, would, at the worst, have to relocate to a new group of victims…often in the same organization where they found their prey before.


Indeed, both Boy Scouts of America and the Catholic Church, for decades, have facilitated pedophiles accessing new targets once they were caught following a male-to-male sexual assault on young and teenage males by refusing to bring charges, refusing to make the identity of the Scout master known, and, indeed, sometimes writing letters of recommendation to a new scout pack or church group when the pedophile was forced to move from the area to escape public attention.


Had the Boy Scouts done the right thing, and sought legal justice for the boys/teenagers sexually assaulted by scout masters, it would have done much to both out the pedophiles and, if they were convicted, help ensure that they did not have the same kind of access to boys/teenagers in the future.


Starting in about mid-2012, the LATimes did a series of articles on the pedophiles who made the Boy Scout’s their hunting grounds. There are links to repository of records, including records indexed to pedophile, year, city and state. Of course, the lack of action by the Boy Scouts in outing these monsters is also documented.


There are many articles about different aspects of Boy Scouts and pedophilia. Do a web search for “Boy scouts” and “pedophilia,” and you will be led to the series.


There is a map of the US with locations of the pedophiles reported as sexual activity, including assault, with the young males in the Boy Scouts.


In California alone, there were 521 logged entries. In far too many cases, there were multiple listings for the same boy scout leader, who simply changed locations and joined a new scout group when he was forced to leave, or left on his own, a previous scout pack.

I don’t know how the number of abuse cases compared to the number of scouts, but you are right that pedophiles flock to these youth groups. The BSA does not prosecute pedophiles unless the pedophile is an employee; charges and prosecution are left up to the parents. All parents and leaders now have background checks and undergo training to protect the kids. No one adult is allowed to take kids camping or on other trips.


They now have a program that includes girls (Venturing), and have been active in encouraging minorities to be Scouts.


I have read some of the cases that they did not handle properly, and I admit they are distressing, to say the least.


The Boy Scout values are old-fashioned I suppose–mainly God (a higher power) and Country. If you think that acceptance of LGBT values is more important than these values or the good things the Scouting program does, then I can’t argue with you.

“God” and “country” do NOT advocate sheltering pedophiles. You defile both Bod and our country for you to even imply otherwise.


The BSofA has an OBLIGATION to prosecute those who have sexually assaulted the boy scouts in the charge of BSofA. They also have an OBLIGATION to alert other boy scout troupes of the identities of those boy scout leaders who have been forced to resign, or who have resigned in shame, after sexually assaulting boy scout(s).


The BSofA CANNOT teach the “values” of “God” and “country” if it coddles pedophiles who sexually assault boy scouts. They do not have the moral ability to teach ANY values.


I don’t know why anyone would entrust their child to BSofA. Their values and priorities are sick and twisted.

Also I was a boy scout, racism, intolerance and religion fueled ignorance was the norm. Our troops assistant scoutmaster went away after a touching incident, not exaggerated. full perv and a white guy.

They facilitated scout leaders sexual assaults of boys and young teenage males (male adult-on-male minor sexual assault) but have bigotry as an institutionalized moral when it comes to consensual sexual relations between peers.
