Shortly before 1:30 p.m., a Chevrolet box van caught fire near Ivanpah, California. At the time, the van was traveling on the southbound shoulder of the highway about five miles away from the Nevada border.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene before CHP officers arrived. It is unclear whether the fireworks were legal for residential use.
“The fireworks were exploding inside,” said San Bernardino County fire spokesman Tracey Martinez. “The truck burned to the ground.”
All southbound lanes closed for about an hour while firefighters battled the blaze.
The CHP requests that anyone with information contact its Barstow office at (760) 255-8700.
