CHP officers seeking suspects who damaged a car during the SLO protest

California Highway Patrol officers are seeking the public’s help identifying the Black Lives Matter protesters who allegedly damaged a car with a 4-year-old child inside on Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo, according to the CHP.

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, approximately 300 protesters marched onto Highway 101, blocking all lanes in both directions for nearly an hour. A driver then drew the ire of the protesters when they attempted to drive away.

“While traffic was stopped, a group of protestors became violent and circled a motorist who was attempting to drive around the protestors,” according to a CHP Facebook post. “One suspect jumped on the hood of the victim’s vehicle and an additional suspect broke the rear window out of the vehicle with a skateboard as the vehicle was leaving the area.

“The shattered glass showered down on a four year old boy who was secured in his child safety seat. In fear for their safety, the driver was able to elude the combative protestors,” the CHP added.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the CHP at (805) 594-8700 or through social media.

In defense of the protesters, San Luis Obispo resident James Dugger admits he was not at the protest, but that protesters he trusts blame the boy’s parent for what they have deemed road rage.

“The car in question ran over a protestor on a skateboard, which flew back and hit the back windshield,” Duggar posted on Facebook. “The child wasn’t harmed at all. If anything, the driver put them in danger by having road rage and trying to run over another human being.”

There is video of the driver moving his vehicle onto the shoulder of the offramp trying to illegally drive around the protestors (who are illegally in the roadway). The driver slowly crept up behind the protestors and when they wouldn’t move out of his/her way, s/he accelerated into the crowd. You can see someone falling onto the hood while being hit and another person’s foot appears to be ran over. There is no video (at least, that I’ve found yet) which shows the window being broken, but other posts from people who were there stated someone intentionally broke the window in retaliation for the driver hitting pedestrians with his vehicle. There are two parties in the wrong here–the wreckless driver for intentionally hitting pedestrians (with a child in the backseat, no less) and the person who broke the window (with a child in the backseat, no less). They were both clearly in the wrong and they should both be charged accordingly. I’m guessing the cops didn’t do anything about the driver, because CPS would likely take the kid away since the parent was using their vehicle as a weapon while the kid was in the car. I don’t think that should matter–you commit the crime, you deal with the repercussions–maybe you shouldn’t be a parent if your response to having to wait for 5 min for the protestors to clear is to run them down in your car.

We “ echo chamber types” need re-education camps , don’t we Kenny ? You’d be happy to round us all up, trash our houses, take our businesses and “stuff” and give it to the “woke” because they deserve it and we all stole it . Dude , get some counseling . It’ll work out better for you .

It’s not illegal to drive around an obstruction on the road. The vehicle was trying to take the offramp, get off the road and avoid being caught up in the protest, so why were people trying to stop it? It seems like it would be in the best interest of protesters to let those cars leave, rather than trying to hold them hostage. It’s one thing to hold a protest and quite another to intentionally intimidate innocent bystanders who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Seriously? An upended skateboard broke a car window? Even if it magically flew up into the air it would not break that window. Assuming the skateboarder was hit by the car going forward to get out of there, the board would have had to fly over the car and somehow break the back window.


You’re going to have to do better than that! And BTW the skateboarders I know don’t seem especially interested in politics, or anything else, other than skateboarding. I say this in their defense.

Sorry, there’s a point when illegally blocking the freeway makes you a human speed bump and not a peaceful protester. Time’s up!

The skateboard flew up and broke the window? Pfffffft, yeah right.

Chief Cantrell was a fool to let little miss BLM trick her into ignoring this planned gathering so they could march right onto the freeway. She needs to go.

My thought exactly. Good police work is undercover intelligence gathering. Missed the boat there. And speaking of the Chief has she got around to issuing a citation to attorney Bettencout whose unsecured guns, in violation of state law and reasonable gun owner common sense, resulted in a murder of an innocent man and the wounding of 4 of her fellow officers. Time to act on that Chief.

The US-101 is not an interstate freeway (note the lack of an I in front). But agree otherwise. Pedestrians who walk onto a freeway should not be surprised if they get hit by car.


Also interesting that none of the protesters have posted video of this incident. At least one of the hundreds of millennial protesters must have captured it on tiktok/snapchat/fb live, etc. If it really was a runover skateboard hitting a windshield, then prove it!
