SLO County supervisor checking into mental health facility

Supervisor Adam Hill

For the third time in less than three years, San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Adam Hill announced he is taking time off work to deal with mental health issues.

Hill announced in a press release on Monday that he plans to check into a residential mental health facility. Hill did not disclose when he plans to return to work, but said he hopes to “return soon.”

“Persistent, and at times, painfully debilitating depression, has necessitated my seeking more intensive and focused treatment at a residential health program,” Hill wrote. “While I have been working closely with county staff on the many challenging issues our community faces, I have not been able to recover and heal as sufficiently as needed, and chose to seek specialized care at this time.”

Hill’s statement follows public condemnation over his failure to perform his supervisor duties while collecting his full salary. Since March 1, Hill has not participated in 26 of the 33 board and committee meetings he was scheduled to attend.

“If he cared at all about this community he would step down,” Ginger Schenk wrote on Facebook. “This is such a critical time that we need our BOS representatives more than ever. How in the world are we allowing this? Enough is enough!”

In his latest press release, Hill writes about the need for compassion and understanding.

“Many people are suffering right now, and the way forward for all of us, ultimately, is to overcome polarizing and alienating tendencies that fuel suspicion, antagonism, and violence,” Hill wrote. “Our common humanity is injured badly by this, but renewed every time we show compassion and a willingness to understand and respect others.”

In a Feb. 9, 2018 letter to the Tribune, Hill first publicly disclosed his struggles with mental health issues, which he gave as a reason for his aggressive behaviors. In the letter, Hill also announced he would be taking some time off from his supervisor duties.

“I’ve struggled with depression nearly my entire life, a situation that for me, manifests itself in heightened states of anger and anguish,” Hill wrote in the letter to the Tribune.

Hill’s 2018 disclosure followed public outrage over an outburst at a constituent. Less than a month after losing the board chairmanship because of allegations of bullying and a lack of decorum, Hill sent a string of Facebook messages chastising a Pismo Beach man over a commentary in the Tribune before telling the man to “fuck off.”

Earlier this year, Hill took time off work following a suicide attempt and a FBI raid on his office and home. Hill attributed his suicide attempt to the stresses of running for office, in a statement released to the media on March 30,

“In the weeks leading up to Election Day, I fell into a bad episode of depression, culminating in an attempt to end my life,” Hill wrote. “I’ll have more to say later, but right now my main focus is on restoring my health so I can return to the job I love.”

unfit for public office

All paid for by you. Adam has always struggled for gainful employment. His current employment, even before payments from Helios Dayspring and John Belsher, is extremely gainful.

As much as I dislike Adam’s policies and actions in both his personal life and the public life, I really hope he can come to forgive (first) his father, and then (much harder) his mother. Even post-reposed (I don’t know if either still live). He will never be able to overcome what is corrupting him until he does that.

The man needs to find and free his soul, truly. Earthly things (such as an affair) will not get him there, as he’s no doubt learned by now (one can hope).

r0y, not sure of your existential perspective… His actions are his MO, and only he is responsible for them… not his father or his mother. Your statement is nothing more than deflection hiding what he has become; he made his choices.

Who’s paying for this treatment?

If he claims the stress due to being a County Supervisor caused him to do unsavory things(like taking bribes)as well as causing his irrational behavior, does he get County disability?

This might be the smartest move a corrupt politician has ever made!!!

Innocent by reason of insanity as well as a lifetime of disability payments, a new blueprint for all the other corrupt politicians!!!

You’re right Boldguy. He would not be the first politician to claim mental stress, and is likely going through these gymnastics to possibly get a more favorable treatment when it’s time to face the judge.

The paper trail the FBI has a hold of will tell the story.

The next in-house mental health facility he checks into will be Atascadero State Hospital.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, if your job is forcing you to committing suicide, it’s time to get a new job.

The voters in the 3rd District have time for a recall petition. Do it now and the Supervisors can schedule the recall election within the November Election.

Yank the rug out from under Hill before he takes the oath of office again in December and starts another 4-year term.

This would also stop Gov. Gruesome from appointing a replacement. The voters of District 3 should pick their new Supervisor.

Fruit for thought: Do we want to keep the lame duck that can only sit in his pond and swim in a circle or do we want him removed and get the Governor to appoint, let’s say the likes of Heidi Harmon when eligible, to replace him? Maybe the voters will pay better attention and vote for the right reasons next time?

He definitely has to be removed… but Heidi??? You’re kidding right? This county can do better.

IT seems to me if I were incapable of doing my job for any reason, I would get fired! Why in the world is he able to NOT work and keep his position?

You do realize this is a government position, right?

Is sanity a requirement for a politician? I have a politician in my town who turned the neighbor in for having a shed that was too big. Meanwhile the same politician built a retaining wall on public property with no permit. These scum bag politicians in this county have got to go. We need politicians that represent the people, not their own business interests.
