A federal agency is suing San Luis Obispo-based Meathead Movers for allegedly recruiting young workers at the exclusion of older workers, an alleged violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on Friday filed a class action suit against the popular moving company for intentionally recruiting and hiring young college students while “excluding older workers regardless of their individual abilities.” Since at least 2017, “Meathead Movers failed to recruit and hire applicants over 40 into moving, packing and customer service positions.”

“Excluding older workers based on their age for marketing purposes is unlawful,” said Anna Park, regional attorney for the Los Angeles District Office. “Employers should remember that setting criteria and recruiting based on a person’s age violates federal law.”

Local brothers Aaron and Evan Steed own and operate Meathead Movers, which they founded while still in high school. With seven offices in California, Meathead Movers now employs approximately 700 people, making it the largest independent moving company in the state.

After first attempting to reach a settlement through its mediation process, the EEOC filed the class action suit against Meathead Movers.

“The incorrect and unfair assumptions that someone cannot perform a job because of their age — or that clients would prefer younger workers — are the impetus behind the Age Discrimination in Employment Act,” said Christine Park-Gonzalez, the EEOC’s LA district director. “The EEOC will continue to ensure an even playing field for applicants and employees in the workplace.”

Actually, they are one-third moving company and two-thirds marketing and Chippendales show. Don’t get a “bid”, get a minimum and an hourly rate. The hard-working slightly overweight Mexicans do it for me!

ITS A MOVING COMPANY… THEY MOVE HEAVY STUFF UP RAMPS INTO TRUCKS… THEY NEED YOUNG STRONG PEOPLE TO DO THIS JOB… OUR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS WAY OUT OF CONTROL….ARE THEY GOING TO SUE THE NBA NEXT?…. doubtful…..

There are many people over 40 who can do this job. Too many people what to dictate what individuals can do rather than respect freedom of choice.

No one over 40 wants this job

How do you know? Have you interviewed everyone over 40? Your response is as biased as those who are discriminating again people over 40 and supporting taking away peoples’ freedom to work.

Once again… government ruins a good thing.

Actually, people who discriminate based on age and not on an individual’s ability ruin things.

but it’s ok to hire 18 year olds to fight for Rich weapons manufacturers causing endless wars and murdering kids. ok

It’s OK to hire VOLUNTEERS that are able to meet or exceed certain criteria.

Apparently, you’ve also never heard of “lowest bidder”…

If someone believes they can do the job, and demonstrates it, why discriminate based on age? Nothing like taking choices away from people who want to work and then complaining people don’t want to work. Hypocrisy at its finest.

If that is discrimination, then why do other agencies like law enforcement or the military have cutoff ages? Personally, I think the insurance companies would have the final say on ages, as they do for drivers, because the actuaries are how they conduct business.

Unbelievable, you build a company from scratch and employ thousands of people over decades and create a big tax base for the gubberment and they still come in a stael from you over BS.

Christine Park-Gonzalez, the EEOC’s LA district director. said “The EEOC will continue to ensure an even playing field for applicants and employees in the workplace.” Okay, fine. But what is the EEOC doing to “ensure an even playing field” for employers?

My back aches just thinking about being a mover after 40. If there was ever a job for young men, being a mover is that job. The Feds should work on that little problem most call “open borders” and leave Meathead Movers alone.
