Misinformation versus morality in Paso Robles schools

November 20, 2025

District Trustee Kenney Enney

OPINION by KENNEY ENNEY

Paso Robles Joint Unified School District trustees Jim Cogan and Joel Peterson published an op-ed in the “Paso Robles Daily News” on Nov. entitled “Misinformation hurts our schools and wastes taxpayer dollars,” in which they accused me of “fearmongering and misinformation to scare parents into worrying about the safety of their daughters in Paso schools.”  They accused me of shirking my “fiduciary responsibilities” and engaging in “hate speech” against transgender students.

Their opinion piece highlights what I resigned myself to some time ago, that the PRJUSD Board of Trustees no longer have shared morals.

Following the murder of Charlie Kirk on Sept. 10, and the horrendous post by a part time PRJUSD employee, celebrating his assassination, the board turned a blind eye because it was “free speech.” After several board members even echoed similar sentiments to the post, it was obvious to me that there was no longer any hope of reasoning with them regarding “culture war” matters.

When celebrating a murder is “acceptable speech” because you disagree with the victim’s opinions, but stating that there are only two sexes, or misgendering someone is “hate speech;” we no longer have shared morals.

When you treat a biological male in a dress as normal, and allow him into girl’s private spaces, and then humiliate girls by telling them they need “counseling” and are not “tolerant” if they object to his presence; we no longer have shared morals.

When you think perpetuating the dangerous delusions of vulnerable children is “love,” but that working to ground them in reality is “hate;” we no longer have shared morals.

Meriam Webster defines moral as “conforming to a standard of behavior that is considered right and good by most people.” It defines immoral as “not moral, morally evil or wrong; broadly – conflicting with generally or traditionally held moral principles.”

A Jan. 2025 nation-wide poll conducted by the New York Times found that 79% of Americans believe men should be barred from competing in women’s sports/spaces including 94% of Republican respondents, 64% of Independent voters and 67% of Democrats.

A similar April 2025 poll conducted by Fox News found that 79% of Californians and 71% of parents in California believe boys should be barred from girl’s sports/spaces.  If this poll were conducted in Paso Robles, I suspect the numbers would be similar.

Cogan and Peterson’s unwillingness to protect “traditionally held moral principles” regarding protection of the innocence, dignity and emotional and physical safety of young girls, places them squarely in the immoral camp in this matter. What makes it worse is that they have shirked their moral duties out fear of losing state funding, prioritizing dollars over daughters.

“I, do solemnly swear, that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the State of California, against all enemies, foreign and domestic” is the opening line of the oath every board member took at the beginning of their term. By knowingly violating the Title IX civil rights of the young women in PRJUSD, I believe Jim Cogan and Joel Peterson have broken theirs.

Cogan and Peterson say that the district’s discriminatory practices against girls are supported by U.S. and California law.

Title VI of the U.S. Constitution, also known as the “Supremacy Clause” clearly states that when state and federal laws are in conflict, federal law is supreme. Since his inauguration in January, President Trump has made clear that he and his administration will defend the civil rights of young women and girls as outlined in Title IX.

Through a series of executive orders, and legal actions, President Trump has clearly defined male and female in U.S. law and warned California and other states that “it is the policy of the United States to rescind all funds from educational programs that deprive women and girls of fair athletic opportunities, which results in the endangerment, humiliation, and silencing of women and girls and deprives them of privacy. It shall also be the policy of the United States to oppose male competitive participation in women’s sports more broadly, as a matter of safety, fairness, dignity, and truth.”

Loss of Federal funds for the PRJUSD could equal $5.9 million for fiscal year 2025-2026.

On June 18, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee law banning certain medical care for minors related to treating “gender dysphoria, gender identity disorder, or gender incongruence.” In so holding, the Supreme Court acknowledged that a person’s identification as “transgender” is distinct from a person’s “biological sex.” This reinforced the Trump Administration’s position that Title IX only protects individuals based on their “biological sex.”

A subsequent July 9 U.S. Department of Justice federal lawsuit against the California Department of Education (CDE) and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) alleges “[CDE and CIF] policies and actions are harming girls by denying girls the opportunity to compete in student sports on a level playing field in which they have the same opportunities as boys. Defendants’ athletics policies and practices unfairly force girls to compete against boys in competitions designed for girls. These policies and actions discriminate based on sex and harm female student athletes. Not only do defendants’ policies and actions eviscerate equal athletic opportunities for girls, but they also require girls to share intimate spaces, such as locker rooms, with boys, causing a hostile educational environment that denies girls educational opportunities.”

PRJUSD is guilty as charged.

This raises the question as to what should girls do when they know that their God given rights are being violated by the very elected officials who swore an oath to protect them? According to Jim Cogan and Joel Peterson, they should shut up and take it.

Because I know that this board will take no action to protect the dignity and emotional and physical safety of these young ladies unless forced to do so, I have publicly recommended several options to the families: (1) Withdraw from the district. Not a viable option for everyone; (2) File formal complaints with the district and the U.S. Department of Justice; (3) Take legal action against the district. Advocates for Faith and Family, Liberty Council, Pacific Justice Institute and Thomas More Society are all legal groups that are taking cases like this pro bono; (4) Take civic action. Organize and continue to publicize your plight. Protest. Boycott.

And, ultimately, in 2026, remove the board members like Jim Cogan and Joel Peterson who refuse to stand up to protect you.

Thank you Kenny for standing up for our children. It has been 8 years since the last of my children all graduated from PRHS. Not a chance I would send them there now after witnessing this abomination of boys in girls locker rooms and horrible academics to go along with it. Parents need to find another schooling option besides this horrible high school. Hard to believe Peterson is still on the school board after running the school district off the financial cliff.

Very well said!! The idiocy of transgender has taken over our schools and it needs to stop! The Paso Robles schools have deteriorated into places of indoctrination instead of learning. There seems to be a great deal of money pouring into this administration and the students are getting nothing but garbage fed to them. I’m in agreement with taking our children out of this catastrophe and either home schooling them or taking them to private schools. Maybe someone will wake up and see the Light of Christ at the end of the dark tunnel the Paso Schools seem to be in.

I get that these issues are a stone in your shoe but dude look at your district’s dashboard that just came out. -62 points below the state math standard!? -22 below the reading standard?! Why dont you all write op-ed pieces on that? Not that your thing ain’t important but teaching math and reading is the main thing y’all do for $108 million a year. Get that right and the community will be more willing to listen to the issues your passionate about.

Hard to teach basic stuff when half the class doesn’t care to learn or speak English

Correct. Lets start by not educating the ILLEGAL INVADER spawn of other countries en masse.

#AmericansFirst

STOP STEALING MY/OUR TAX DOLLARS FOR citizens of other countries.

The nonsense at issue significantly distracts both educators and students from the core curriculum, while also sopping up resources that could go to STEM etc. 86 this crap and scores WILL get better. Guarantee it.

I use to have two breeder bucks who would spend the whole season trying to fight eachother from separate sides of the ranch. Yelling to escalate to getting out and fighting. With a whole bunch of does and a job to do. I took both of them to the auction for tacos. Point is there’s a job thats being paid for and it isn’t getting done well. The other side is gonna have the same guarantee you have, they will swear it’s gonna work too. You lock horns and huff and nothing gets done but the 100 million is still gone.

You completely miss the point. Scores were better before this DEI n tranny nonsense made it into our schools. And the feds WILL withhold funds, and feds n parents WILL sue states and districts that try to foist this on their kids. Perhaps if you had daughters n granddaughters with guys invading their locker rooms and sports you’d fell differently? Some things are easily worth fighting for. And I ain’t worried bout anyone turning me into tacos.

Lol! I wouldn’t ever send my kids or grandkids to any of the public schools in this county. My daughter sitting next to me and is safe and happy thank you. You had to get personal. Bet you get your head stuck in the fence all the time too!

Personal?

Feelings. They took it personally.

Yeah… l guess. Personal woulda been if I mentioned the dark smelly place his head seemed stuck in – but I didn’t because I was actually trying to get him to consider what this was like for the female students having to deal with this crap. But I guess he can’t relate cuz his kids get to sidestep it.

I’d say the current scores are no reflection on “DEI n tranny nonsense” but a combination of things that have happened in the last ten years. For one, the tests have changed to reflect common core standards and an emphasis on critical thinking rather than rote memorization. For several years during the “no child left behind” fervor of the Bush era, teachers directly taught to the test and scores did rise. Second, the pandemic set students back at least two years and scores have declined across the nation because of it, not just in California. Finally, Paso Robles is a Hispanic majority school district with a high percentage of English learners who often score poorly on English language standardized tests. I really doubt it has anything to do with one or two transgender students in a locker room and I’m not sure DEI policies have had any impact at all.

Seems, goats know their are two genders.

One of the lightning rods cooking up the toxic cloud over Paso schools. I grew up here. My dad was a grad here. Thank god we didn’t have these politically charged bullies getting in the way of kids wanting to be kids.

Guys like Enney starts a fire where there isn’t one. Political zealots like him should just shut up and stay out of the way.

WORK ON UNIFYING THE STUDENTS-NOT DIVIDING THEM.

Paso school gets the most ugly press for all the wrong reasons.

Enney and others in the same cave worshipping fox news 24/7: Go for it. But the kids are not into that crap at this stage of their lives. You are turning them off, not on.

Spoken like a rote trained, low-info (IQ) MSM sub.

Informed Americans do NOT get their “news” from Disney, Inc. aka Faux newZ. I’m touching in this because your reply is the standard, falling over left talking point #3, Fox News, Fox News.

The Epoch Times is the ONLY REAL SOURCED NEWS going today, with many other independent sources that are factually informative and not just partisan nonsense espoused by anonymous sources (other Libocrats with TDS).

Signed,

American Patriot #Hispanics4TRUERepublicans

A quick internet search tells me: “Independent media bias and fact-checking organizations rate The Epoch Times as a highly biased, far-right news source with questionable reliability. It is widely criticized for promoting conspiracy theories and misinformation.”

Bingo!

Conspiracy theories to Libocrats.

Bahhhh, bahhhh bahhhhhh

Thank you, Kenney. I read the op-ed you refer to. Lawsuits won’t change things. Let the children stay in public schools and live at home the rest of their lives if parents think getting along with bullies is more important than learning the three R’s and being educated in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The time has come to immediately remove our children from California public schools and enroll them into private education if moving out of state isn’t an option.

Everyone of right mind needs to vote for SCHOOL CHOICE, wherever and whenever it appears.

The truth will out, and the current fascination some hold with the perversion of transgenderism will wither in the light of day. Future generations will ridicule those that today deny basic biology and good common sense, and condemn those that failed to protect our children from such nonsense.

What a bunch of BULL. If you can’t stand the heat (reality), get out of the kitchen. If you really are upset, move to another country and let Paso schools get back to the business of education, which includes DEI, learning how to understand and work with all people, not just those who wear blinders to the world around them and damaging our children’s abilities in living and working in society. Your views are not appreciated.

Truth in science huh?

Libocrats have ZERO self-awareness! It is their mental illness (as confirmed by multiple mental health studies).

Make no mistake about it, their stage 4 TDS is a real mental illness.

You are surprised that your moral code doesn’t line up 100% with other board members? Are you naive? And your illogical conclusion is that if not aligned with you they are therefore immoral people is rather insulting, but not atypical of the Christian right.

If you want to focus on where our moral codes can intersect you may gain better traction than being overbearing. The numbers don’t lie, left and right, are not supportive of trans athletes. We differ on solutions.

But, I do think in a free society trans are entitled to use a bathroom, obtain a job, and secure housing. Along with being able to send their kids to school without you ostracizing them. But I suspect that too is asking too much.

Kenny, this was such a well written piece full of facts full of truth and it’s incumbent upon parents to stand up for their children’s rights. And we who do longer have children in the school district must support them. Morality has never changed. We all know what it is, and when our society changes the paradigm of what that means we have to be the ones who hold the standard. I will do as you’ve asked and file a grievance regarding what this district is doing. I’m in the Lucimar school district and we have similar problems. Our board is comprised of people who don’t know what morality is supposed to look like we must all hold the standard of what that looks like. Thank you for this piece.
