Meathead Movers collecting for Haitian relief

January 18, 2010

By KAREN VELIE

The staff at Meathead Movers is packaging and sending relief supplies to Kansas City for Heart to Heart International to send on to Haitian earthquake victims. They are asking the community to donate “care kits,” on Jan. 20 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Meathead Movers’ corporate headquarters at 144 Hind Lane, suite 140, in San Luis Obispo.

“This is a way that you know the items you are donating are going into the hands of the Haitians,” said Aaron Steed, President of Meathead Movers.

“It feels good to facilitate the generous giving of the people of our community and that the community trusts us to deliver goods to the Haitian people.”

Care kits, as requested by Heart to Heart International, include (all items are required to be brand new):

• One hand towel and one wash cloth
• One comb
• One bottle of travel size shampoo
• One bar of soap and one small soap container
• One individually wrapped toothbrush
• One tube of travel size toothpaste
• Ten adhesive bandages
• Two one-gallon size zipper-zeal plastic bags

“Thank you to all of those who are helping us to create awareness about how we, as a community, can help the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti,” Steed said. “Meathead Movers has received, packaged and delivered over 200,000 pounds of donated goods during previous disasters.”

Meathead Movers is also looking for volunteers on the day of the event, if you are interested, please email or call Angela at aallen@MeatheadMovers.com or (805) 544-6328.

Aaron Steed sent over this update on Thursday:

Hello again,

Due to popular demand, we have extended the timeline for when we will be accepting donations to make Care Kits for Haiti. We had a surprisingly good turnout yesterday, despite the driving rain. If you donated yesterday, thank you for supporting this effort.

We received many calls from those who wished to donate, but were unable to do so due to the weather. We will be collecting donations at the same location (Meathead Movers, 144 Hind Lane, Suite 140, SLO—right behind the Tribune offices). The extended hours are:

Thursday, January 21: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Friday, January 22: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Saturday, January 23: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Sunday, January 24: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

We are collecting the items requested by Heart to Heart International. (All items must be new, per the requesting charity). Meathead (and our amazing volunteers) is then sorting and packaging and then getting the pallets of donated goods to Heart to Heart, who will in turn ship the items to Haiti, where they have an established presence, by the end of next week.

If you have any questions or comments, please email me, or call us at (805) 544-6328. Additionally, please feel free to forward this email to any of your friends/contacts whom may be interested.

Thank you,

Aaron Steed

Love the effort of Meathead Movers! However….have a hard time supporting a culture that piles their dead victims in roadblocks to protest the “slow” response to aid. I’m sorry, but did Haiti help the US during any of our crisis??? Has any other country (other than maybe Brittain) help us during the Northridge earthquake, hurricane Katrina….uuuummmmmm…..9/11????????? Considering the financial mess this country finds itself in, maybe “charity should begin at home”. Sick and tired of the celebrities supporting other countries when there are homeless and hungry children in their own neighborhoods!

I have to agree with you 5th gen. My wife and i lost our home and everything in a fire in ’04 and no one but some very close friends and family donated anything to us. I just can’t find it in my heart to keep donating to foreign countries that could give a rat’s rear end about us when we are in trouble ie. Katrina. There are some that care and we should reciprocate appropriately during there time of need.

Sound like a good effort! Kudos to Meathead!

I wonder if any union thugs are planning to help with the Care Kits.
