A new weekly feature from CalCoastNews where we spotlight upcoming special events.

Summer has arrived and with it comes fun, drinks, friends and maybe the occasional educational opportunity.

Libraries in San Luis Obispo County are offering a summer program from June 19 to Aug. 21 for children 4-years-old and up. Events include making picture books, joining a book club and story-time. Children 5 and younger will have the opportunity to make their own picture book with a parent and older children can join a book club. Each child who finishes their book will receive a free book and a tote bag with gift certificates from participating restaurants such as Round Table Pizza and HomeTown Buffet.

A chance to finally catch up to your tech-savvy kids will be available Friday, June 25 at the San Luis Obispo Library. The library staff is hosting a “Technology Petting Zoo” where attendants can learn how to use iPhones, iPads, Kindles and more. There will also be a video game component where attendants can learn about Dance Dance Revolution, Wii Fit and Guitar Hero and more. The free event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in the community room.

Or for those interested in a few drinks and a beautiful sunset this weekend, the Point San Luis Lighthouse is celebrating its 120 birthday with a dinner on Saturday or appetizers on Sunday. The number of guests is limited so to make reservations call 805-540-5771.

What better way to enter a grueling work week than with a round of karaoke, a drink or two, friends and guaranteed laughs? Mo-Tav offers karaoke every Sunday from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. for those who want to discover their inner Diana Ross or Lady Gaga.

But for everyone else who wants to start their weekend a little early, the Avila Beach Golf Resort is hosting Links and Drinks – Ladies Night Out at the Avila Beach Golf Resort every Thursday from now until Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m. Participants will receive a complimentary drink at the Paradise Patio Bar as well as a golf lesson with PGA instructor Matt Cradduck.

Totally love this story about the summer reading club at the library. It is a wonderful opportunity each summer for your child to increase their vocabulary and reading skills. I attended this activity every summer as a child and never forgot the kindness and generosity of the librarian. In fact, I started a scholarship fund over at the Middle School nine years ago and every June I dedicate my scholarships to a figure who mentored me as a child – one June in the past I dedicated it to the librarian. Thanks for a great story!
