Spotlight: What’s happening this weekend
August 27, 2010
By LETICIA RODRIGUEZ Continue to embrace the great weather the Central Coast has been experiencing this weekend by heading out to see some great music acts and a few sporting events. So slather on some sunscreen and prepare for a week out and about. Kick the weekend off slow by enjoying some music, wine and great food in Pismo Beach. SeaVenture Restaurant hosts live music every Friday through Oct. 1. The free event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Be sure to be in bed early Friday night after the music at SeaVenture so you can be up in time to partake in the 22nd Annual Dune Run Run in Grover Beach. The annual event takes participants through Grover Beach, the boardwalk, hard packed sand and soft sand dunes. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the run kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Ramona Garden Park in Grover Beach. For more information call 805-473-4580. Get plenty of rest after the Grover Beach run so you’re prepared for a night of music by the Cal Poly Collegians Alumni Big Band. The annual concert is put on by 20 Cal Poly alumni and collegians at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. The concert is free, but donations to the Collegians’ jazz scholarship are welcome. The concert is from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the Madonna Inn Ballroom. For more information visit www.cpcollegiansalumni.com. Don’t want to run but still want to see someone break a sweat? Then take the scenic drive up to San Francisco to watch the Tri-California Alcatraz Triathlon on Sunday. Participants will partake in a 1.2 mile swim, a 25 mile bike ride and a 7 mile run through the waters from Alcatraz and through the hills of San Francisco. The website calls the triathlon “one of the most difficult triathlons in the world” so be sure to come out and support everyone who participates. The event kicks off at Marina Green at Marina Boulevard and Filmore Street in San Francisco at 7 a.m. For more information visit www.tricalifornia.com. If you would rather stay on the Central Coast on Sunday, then head out to the Avila Beach Golf Resort for the summer’s last Sunday on the Sand concert event. Ending the summer festivities is reggae group Nitely Irie. The music starts at 1 p.m. and is free. Start your weekend the same way you ended it: at the Avila Beach Golf Resort. The resort will be host to legendary group ZZ Top on Thursday, Sept. 2. The band will perform a concert benefitting OPTIONS, a local non-profit that serves the disabled. The music starts at 7 p.m. For more information visit www.avilabeachmusicfestival.org. Find more local happenings and movie show times on the CalCoastNews event calendar.
