Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant temporary shut down
April 26, 2012
Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant has completely shut down because of another influx of sea salp – a small, jellyfish-like organism – clogging the intake valves in the unit two reactor.
Plant officials said unit two, which was operating at 24 percent power, will stay shut down until conditions with the intake structure improve.
Earlier this week operators shut down unit one for a scheduled refueling.
On Monday night, operators discovered a clog of salps in the unit two intake and reduced power to 15 percent.
Diablo Canyon’s two units together produce approximately 2,300 net megawatts of greenhouse-gas-free electricity, about 10 percent of all electricity generated in California, and enough to meet the needs of over three million homes in central and northern California.
