Point San Luis Lighthouse stairs vandalized with dog epitaph

March 14, 2013

An unknown person carved and painted an epitaph to a dog called Fisher onto the Point San Luis Obispo Lighthouse beach stairs prompting the Lighthouse Keepers to ask the public to help them find the perpetrator.

The stairs – built with funds from the Port San Luis Harbor District, Coastal Conservancy, and the Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers – were vandalized with a message about a well-loved canine.

“In loving memory of Fisher, best dog ever – Schmoe, 6/9/1998 – 1/6/2013,” the person wrote.

The Lighthouse Keepers said they plan to have volunteers remove, replace and re-stain the 16 foot boards.

“We simply hope that by making this incident known, we will encourage everyone to help protect not only this public space, but all public spaces, that everyone contributes to for the good of us all,” they said in a press release. “However, if anyone does have information about who might have caused this damage we certainly would appreciate being contacted at (805) 540-5771.”

I can’t believe that anyone (including this dog lover) would think that this is sweet and okay…it’s not. On top of it, the selfish individual took all the space, so I can’t carve anything about my kid’s deceased guinea pig on the timber….sheesh.

Get a grip, grieve for those creatures close to you without impacting the rest of us.

BeenThereDoneThat

That was mean, and beneath you. I thought you were good at responding to tirades & rants, but when you are reduced to name-calling like a 1st grader, you just concede you have no more logic to apply to your arguement or reply to Justducky.

Love your comment. Thanks for the laugh.

Think what would have happened if they caught the first person to put their gum on the wall in Bubble Gum Alley. It would be all clean, sure, but it wouldn’t attract tourists.

What ever happened to a message in a bottle…the beaches are running out of beach glass. lol

It’s poor form to wreck other people’s property with your private feelings.

I hope the perp recognizes this was a selfish act (probably performed under duress of grief), and comes forward to make it right.

If the dog was licensed would it be possible to cross-check the records at the pound for a dog of this name and if so, find the owner? The date of birth is there, that is usually in the pound’s records, too. Just an idea. Or perhaps a check of records from Woods in case the dog was adopted from there?Or a call to loca veterinarians who may have euthanized it or had it as a patient? If someone wants to solve this case, I don’t think it would be that hard. But then vandalism is only a misdemeanor at most, so why would anyone in law enforcement really care? It would get plea bargained down to an infraction so why bother? But the person should pay for the repairs.in my opinion.

A place for everything and everything in its place.

Oh just leave it alone. Yes I know that it will cause others to carve “Billy loves Sue” and what not. So what? It’s heartfelt and it’s cute, it beats the gang graffiti and spray paint. Somebody sure did love their dog and more of us than not can relate to that.

It’s just a carving on some stairs, get over it and concern yourselves with something important.

Cindy I agree that it isn’t as bad looking as some Graffiti BUT it becomes a case of where do you stop. So I want to engrave something to a dead family member on the side of a city building and so and so wants to engrave something on some other public property. Where does it end? Everyone should and would have to have the same rights. So, so much for heartfelt and cute. It’s not.

Yes, I know that you’re right. I knew people would disagree with my post but it struck me that with all the problems and cover ups in our county, this is the least of our problems.

In reality, I think that we should build an area down by the beach where people can share (carving only, no paint allowed) their heartfelt moments, good and bad. Like when something or someone they love is gone and they need to tell the world that they’re hurting, or when they fall in love and want to tell everyone about that too! We need to get back to being softer and kinder towards each other.

I like this response better and I agree that a place to express is fine but again let’s not let people just pick and chose where they think it is appropreiate.

I agree Cindy. But some people are offended by a sad dog owner who lost his pal. And no one understands the feeling of expression, especially when they use something paid by the taxpayers.

I get offended when I see the Holy Cross on everything. That is supposed to represent a place of reverence. But somehow every public sector building has some dedication to our heavenly father in them, and that is where the most deceit, cheating, and other despicable acts take place. “In God We Trust”…..sure. We trust in him, but we don’t follow his example.

I for one am glad this is there. It beats the heck out of “Bobby love Sue 4 ever” or some gang graffiti, which is what typically happens . I would rather think about a persons love for a dog, then how the gang bangers are taking over the nice, quiet places we go to watch the sun set, or to walk our dog,

You stop when it is too much. This is not too much.

Idiot.

That was mean.

Hmm I state the obvious and that is mean. Let me ask you, how do you feel about the money he just cost YOU as a taxpayer minding their own business? Is that nice or mean???
