Hill overtaking Ferrara in A.G. mayor race

A spectacular political upset may be brewing in the colorful race for the mayor’s seat in the village of Arroyo Grande, with write-in candidate Jim Hill gaining substantial ground Thursday on longtime incumbent Tony Ferrara as county election officials continued counting additional ballots.

Ferrara’s initial 9-point lead, fueled by early mail-in tallies, plummeted overnight to 3.5 percentage points, with 800 more ballots to be counted, probably by the end of Friday’s work day. Hill collected more than twice as many new votes as Ferrara today.

Another 1,216 votes are slated to be counted, most by Friday at 5 p.m.

If needed, 717 additional ballots — either left blank by the voter, or with the write-in candidate’s name written, but without the oval blackened — would finally be counted.

Ferrara’s advantage has been eroding ever since the opening of polls Tuesday morning. At today’s end of counting, he claimed 2,545 votes, or 51.79 percent, and Hill’s total had climbed to 2,369 or 48.21 percent. The candidates now are separated by only 176 votes.

After avoiding the media for days following the election, Ferrara finally contacted KSBY with the following statement, in which he blamed reporters, radio personalities, city residents and police, and a lack of communication for what he called “the results of the election.”

“The results of the election have clearly indicated a need for the City and the Community to find ways to better communicate. It has also exposed the disconnects that can often occur when people believe everything they read on an internet site or hear on talk radio. It is troubling when no attempt is made by reasonable people to verify false assertions made through these media. Hopefully, we at the City can open the door wider at City Hall for the community to feel comfortable and welcomed to do so in the future. We will also be welcoming a new Council member and this will provide an opportunity for all of us to share new ideas about the future of the City and also exploring more opportunities for comprehensive communication and outreach for the community.” (Tony Ferrara)

Hill’s brief but fast-moving campaign evolved from community dissatisfaction with the handling of a July 3 City Hall incident in which City Manager Steve Adams and a subordinate employee, Teresa McClish, the city’s community development director, were found near midnight in Adams’ darkened office by police responding to an emergency call.

Citizens accused Ferrara and the rest of the council with fashioning a cover-up of the incident — and then suggesting that responding police officers were lying about the circumstances to further ongoing contract negotiations.

Ferrara is the newly elected president of the powerful League of California Cities, a post he’d have to vacate if he loses to Hill.

Also, next Tuesday’s regularly scheduled city council meeting has been cancelled.

Dear Mr. Mayor,

Perhaps it’s time to re-visit your Biblical history and study up on the story of David and Goliath. Just so you know….that’s how we roll.

Keep it quiet back there. Did you fill out a speaker slip?

Yeah…but I used it to blow my nose…..want it back?

I’m silently raising both hands on my own chair I brought to work with me!

Anyone want a Cracker Jack and an email from the mayor?

Allright……We’re gonna get some things straightened out here:

First off….I’d just like to thank you in advance for not using the typical “thumbs up” vs. “thumbs down” method of showing your support (or misguided lack of) my Mayorship.

You may all silently signify your allegiance to me by silently raising your hands into the air and waving in a slow, stately, dignified motion.

Now, let’s move on to this unpleasant “fringe” report that the Crazy Cat ladies are espousing about the slim possibility that He Who Shall Not Be Named (rhymes with tim gill) might overtake me when all the votes are counted…..

pfftttt….!!!!!!!!!

Let’s keep it civil in here or I might have to call in my legbreakers.

Oh Big Tony, where HAVE you been?

So nice of you to join us…welcome!

PS How old were some of those signs you put up?

You know….we’re gonna take a break here before this gets out of hand. I’d like to remind everyone that I know emotions are running high…but we’re gonna keep it civil.

Do I need to remind you what happened to the Otis character?

FREE OTIS!!!!

turn the cameras off! shut it down… shut it down!

there we go. i’m glad to see there’s at least on intelligent person in the group. MY PEOPLE are allowed to use the thumb emoticons. You other “fringers” continue on with the silent waving.

He didn’t put them up. He hired a petite blonde to do it for him.

I want to thank you big Tony for explaining “the clap” to us a few city council meetings ago.

How would have we learned civility without your royal highness?

HEADLINE…:Mayor Ferarra teaches the citizens of A.G. about “THE CLAP””

What if I feel the need to use Other Finger’s on my hand that might stand up from time to time .. Signed a Fringe Voter

yo Adrian……du do du do do….coming back…..

Defiant until the bitter end. Surprised he doesn’t accuse the police of lying in the statement.

The door at city hall was locked when the tea drinking was occurring. It wasn’t wide open!

Actually, Tony did accuse the police of lying. Note his use of the word “through” in this sentence in his statement: “It is troubling when no attempt is made by reasonable people to verify false assertions made THROUGH these media.” Had he said “BY these media,” it would have simply been a slam at CCN and Congalton. No big deal. But phrased this way, he’s saying the fringe media just passed on “false assertions” made by… the police. Tony just can’t get away from the blame game. It’s not him, it’s everyone else. A mammoth political event is emerging, a wonderful example of local democracy at work.

Good eye IronHub, good eye!

Even if by some extreme unfortunate turn of events,

Ferrara does manage to hang onto his crown,

he is an empty suit,

his city hall kingdom in complete disarray.

The subjects are wise…the gig is up.

It can’t be that Ferrara’s bombast was unknown by the League of California Cities. Ferrara’s actions and demeanor have provided more than an embarrassment to the League. A spotlight now shines on little known yet powerful lobbying group.

The League has reassured us they are “keeping a close eye” on the goings on in AG.

They are no doubt stunned by the results of this election since they have mainly been exposed to Tony’s version of the story.

They must be wondering WHAT THE HECK did we just get ourselves into??

Is there a run-off election that can be triggered by a really close election? What if there was, just for AG, a special run-off election with both candidate’s names on a ballot…?

…should that be necessary, of course. I would think that with a printed name on the ballot, and a separate run-off that the results would be MUCH different than this (albeit exciting) race.

No. There is no such thing. One vote difference is a win.

And if that’s a Hill win, Ferrara will no doubt ask for a recount.

He will not go quietly into the night.

To put it all into perspective:

Early vote by mail voters (before the campaign was underway) 61-39 Ferrara.

Late voters (election day poll results) 58-42 write in.

Yesterday’s update (late vote by mail) 68-32 write in.

If this trend continues today we will have a new mayor. There are also hundreds of unbubbled ballots that have yet to be looked at.

Count every vote.

This is pretty exciting!

I do have one question however, and don’t think I am being a “downer”, I just wonder what would happen if a recall occurred and was successful.

Would a special election take place for Mayor, or would the Council appoint one of themselves, and then appoint a new Council member?

Can a recall election also contain a new Mayor election on the same ballot?

Could the Council recognize the wishes of the residents and appoint Jim Hill as the new Mayor?

Just wondering.

When Gray Davis was recalled didn’t the ballot contain both items? first to recall him and two who should replace him. The second one would not have mattered had the first vote been “NO”.

Secondly, you ask “Could the Council recognize the wishes of the residents ” I would have to say probably not, since to this point they have no done so, so why would they start now, but then again with Joe Costello gone things could change, also remember Jim Guthrie is “Mayor Pro Tem” so that may give him some authority and we all know how he would vote, just like the “Recalled Ferrara” would want him too.

If there were a recall election candidates as potential replacements would also be included on the ballot.

The recall ballot would also contain the election of a new mayor.

Recall is getting way ahead of reality, however. Statute prohibits a recall within the first 90-days of any term of office. The process is lengthy and you’d be very hard-pressed to get a recall election on the ballot before January 2016.

We likely would not do anything until after Barbara Harmon is seated and Mr. Costello is shown the door. The current council is useless for listening to the public, the new council will still be tough, Guthrie and Barneich will still be loyal only to Ferrara but with Ms. Harmon in perhaps Mr. Brown will finally speak up and clearly support the people instead of his current so so support. Given Ferrara temper and bullying I do possibly see why Mr. Brown was a bit reserved.

Even Brown doesn’t like a bully.

Would be much nicer to clinch victory outright,

begin the process of healing AG, and cleaning up the muck.

I urge people to start making Facebook comments to the internet stories published by other media sources. While Ferrara attacks others, he hasn’t explained WHY we should believe him. WHY should we believe him when he defended conflicts of interest at SSLOCSD, which were at least part of the cause of 3 lawsuits from former employees? WHY should we believe him when he uses some of the same tactics from the SSLOCSD days in the “smoke and mirrors” of the City Manager “incident” of July 3rd?

Why, Tony, WHY?

Also, we should add comments to the other sites about why we support Jim Hill… Besides, “because he’s not Tony Ferrara”.
