Santa Maria police responded to a call about a disturbance and found Juan Angel Salinas Pena attempting to break into a family member’s home in the 1700 block of North Lynne Drive. During the standoff, Pena threatened officers, in addition to repeatedly asking them to shoot him, a phenomenon known as “suicide by cop.”

Officers surrounded Pena in the backyard of the home and evacuated neighboring houses. Police deployed foam projectiles, which ultimately caused Pena to drop the knife.

Pena then submitted. Officers arrested him and booked him in Santa Barbara County Jail.

Another sacrificial lamb to justify free shopping at your nearby riot. Fortunately he failed at his quest.

Where in the world did you come up with that association?

The mainstream news regularly does stories on people that elect to confront the law and get shot. Next it is a racial issue, thence the protest by looting stores and more confrontation. I would guess that Juan Angel Salins Pena is hispanic and even in Santa Maria that can be a touchy issue as is African Americans are in Baltimore.

In the last few years there have been a number of looting events that were racially motivated, the result of a trigger that a cop pulled while doing his job. Right or wrong.

This episode demonstrates that police can bring these crazed people under control if they are properly equipped and trained to use non-lethal weapons. The SMPD did a good job which should be recognized. I hope they consider acquiring bean bag guns and pepper balls. It’s is certainly better to avoid shooting someone whenever it’s possible. It saves lives and saves money.
