California governor signs mandatory vaccination bill

vaccineCalifornia Governor Jerry Brown has signed a bill into law that will require almost all schoolchildren in the state to be fully vaccinated, even if their parents object. [Mercury News]

Senate Bill 277 eliminates a provision in California law that exempted children from vaccinations on the grounds of their parents’ personal or religious beliefs. Now, California joins two other states — Mississippi and West Viriginia — in only permitting medical exemptions as reasons to sidestep vaccinations.

The new vaccination requirements apply at public and private schools across the state. Other than obtaining a medical exemption, homeschooling and independent off-campus studies are now the only ways for schoolchildren to avoid vaccinations.

“The science is clear that vaccines dramatically protect children against a number of infectious and dangerous diseases,” Brown said in a statement released Tuesday. “While it’s true that no medical intervention is without risk, the evidence shows that immunization powerfully benefits and protects the community.”

Opposition to the personal belief exemption increased after a measles outbreak began last December at Disneyland. State health officials declared the outbreak over in mid-April after confirming 136 measles cases in California.

SB 277 received widespread support from health and education organizations, including the California Medical Association, California State PTA, California Immunization Coalition and the California Children’s Hospital Association. A recent Public Policy Institute of California poll indicated that two-thirds of Californians believe children should not be allowed to attend public schools unless they are vaccinated.

Vocal opponents rallied against the bill, arguing it violates parental rights and that some vaccines are dangerous to children. Opponents also said the bill will create a hardship on parents who must homeschool their children or place them in off-campus studies in order to avoid vaccinating them.

A question for parents that do not want to vaccinate their children; Do you let your kids go into a bounce house?

I feel awful for the good parents who sincerely believe their children should not have 42 vaccinations! Please, read about this subject and don’t go along blindly, the way our parents did, the way we did!! The New Times had a excellent article by a local parent who does not want her child vaccinated for everything required! Please, inform yourselves.

Generally speaking vaccines are a good thing, but mandating something without allowing for competition or some other guarantee of quality control is shortsighted to say the least. There is absolutely no reason thimerosal and other toxins and heavy metals should be in vaccines –outside of pinching pennies in order to ensure higher profits, of course. From the ‘dramatic scare at disneyland’ to the synchronization of media spin on both the right and the left, this has big pharma written all over it.

Damned govt just gets in the way of free exercise of parent rights. Maybe we should make all those violated rights legal too. Parents’ denying kids vaccinations is a form of child abuse.


Don’t the kids have the right to be healthy even if “parent rights” would deny them their health?

Yes, Jinks, kids have the right to be healthy and if their parents have done research and find that some vaccines can be VERY detrimental to their child’s health shouldn’t these parents be able to protect their children from what the STATE mandates? True, they can always homeschool or move out of state but many folks in CA have to work to survive and find homeschooling to be out of the question. So if they choose to stay and work in CA they must allow their children to be pumped full of questionable vaccines.


Although my children were vaccinated I do understand the new thinking of people who question vaccines and don’t just walk in lock step with convention.

This will not fly. It violates the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 14 Amendments for sure. The science is irrelevant. If the opposition can get enough money together to mount a campaign, this will go away (unless the SCOTUS hears it).

I would be concerned about many things: liability for defective vaccines and just what are limits to what a vaccine is? Anti mental illness vaccine or a do as I say vaccine sounds to be legal with this law. It is in the wording that everyone has read and understands? The schools today and who knows what’s next, an eligibility to vote requirement? Sounds a little crazy today but 30 years ago, allot of today would be crazy.

As in the case of the Jehovah Witnesses, if they disallow their innocent children from receiving emergency blood transfusions where they will die if they don’t receive them, then so be it, at least they were loyal to Jehovah. In the same vein, who is any government to tell a Christian that we’re to allow these Satanic Science vaccinations upon our children so that they’re able to go to liberal public school?


This is the harbinger of our God telling true Christians to ban together in putting our children in a Christian home schooling environment. Besides, when doing so, we won’t have to let our children listen to EVILution anymore, where we can show them the truth in Creationism. Believing in Adam made from dirt, Eve from a rib, a talking snake, and a “flashing sword” at the end of Eden, and where man being only 6000 year old, etc., is more believable than the comedy of EVILution. Occam’s razor rules!


If it worked for the Duggar family, even though they had a minor hypocritical situation to Christianity in the way of child molestation by a family member, if we’re vigilant, this won’t happen to us, and home schooling will work in the name of Jesus, praise!


If our Christian children come down with an illness because of not being vaccinated, and they make others sick or die because of it, then so be it. It is the way of our God for this to happen because He controls everything.

You seem to forget that we have “prayer” as our medicine, where no outside Satanic Science is needed for our healing. We are given peace of mind in knowing that whatever we pray for, we shall receive it if we “believe.”


Jesus stated; “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, BELIEVING, ye shall receive.” (Matthew 21:22) Key word: “believe,” which triggers the prayer in a direct absolute manner in receiving your prayer request. This outcome is likened to healing oneself of any malady or sickness. It’s just that simple.

We’ll say that again in our own words. There’s no proof that a vaccine caused any of the medical conditions reported in the database. That colors Sears’ statement significantly.

The VAERS data cannot be extrapolated and excluded to determine correlation AND causality of the vaccine to an “incident”.


Correlation does NOT mean causality.


As a side note, it is heartbreaking to see a child die from multiple organ failure as a complication of a preventable disease like chicken pox. Thankfully, millions of parents will never have to see what I saw as a brand new nurse in 1997, just one year before the Varicella vaccine was released.

Just a side note: Two of my grandchildren recently had chicken pox. The first to have it was the toddler. She has had zero vaccines. Her case of chicken pox was VERY mild.


Then her older brother age 14 who DID have the vaccine had the chicken pox. His case was pretty severe (although if you’ve had the vaccine it is supposed to make the disease much milder). He not only had the pox on his body, but inside his nose and mouth.


If it were me I would vaccinate my children, but would try hard to evaluate each vaccine for it’s dangers first. Then I would make individual decisions for each vaccine rather then rule out all of them.

I’m not trying to fool anyone. The facts are in some cases vaccines have been FATAL or caused severe injuries (rarely). However, $250,000 is B.S. especially when the VICP has plenty of money in it for just these situations.

Sorry for not explaining in more detail. Here goes: In my opinion the left has a tendency to want to control everything in life with laws and more laws. It’s not that they necessarily are more in league with BIG PHARMA than the right is.


The left (Dems) and the right (Republicans) are both moving in the same direction, IMO. One is just moving faster than the other. And I do not believe that their end goals have to do with more freedoms for the people of this nation.
