San Luis Obispo’s two left-leaning mayoral candidates are quarrelling over a donation one of them received from right-leaning activist and government watchdog, Kevin Rice. Incumbent Mayor Jan Marx is faulting challenger Hedi Harmon for accepting the donation, while Harmon is faulting Marx for not running a positive campaign.

On Sunday, Marx published a newsletter comparing her supporters to Harmon’s. The newsletter stated Harmon received a maximum donation from Rice’s organization, Integrity SLO. Marx then described Rice as a “familiar political operative” and said his antics have recently been exposed.

As proof of her claim, Marx linked to a post on the website SLO Truth, which is operated by Aaron Ochs, a government troll who admitted recently in depositions that many of his claims about his targets are untrue or conjecture. On Monday, Ochs posted a message on social media thanking Harmon for subsequently returning Rice’s donation.

Rice said he has yet to receive the $300 he contributed to Harmon’s campaign. Also, Harmon has not contacted him about the donation, Rice said.

Harmon responded to Marx’s newsletter with a statement criticizing Marx’s negativity and calling on the mayor to join her in a positive campaign.

“The mayor and the local political establishment have sounded the alarm and are resorting to negative campaigning tactics and personal attacks,” Harmon stated. “The disdain coming from our opponent only exemplifies the fact the the people of SLO do not feel heard. They are trying to divide us in a hyper-partisan world. “Let’s stand together, rise above and use this race to create more good in our city and our world.”

Harmon’s statement was accompanied online by a photo of Marx and her standing together, both smiling.

“There’s only time to stand together. I stand with you! “#staypositive #staystrong #standtogether #community,” Harmon wrote on her campaign Facebook page.

As of Sept. 24, Harmon raised $12,771 in total campaign contributions. Marx raised $12,409. Harmon had raised more money than Marx despite entering the race after the incumbent had already begun fundraising.

During the campaign, Marx has received criticism for her stance, or lack thereof, on the city’s rental inspection ordinance. Marx previously voted for and promoted the controversial ordinance, but amid outrage over the regulation, she asked city staff to place a review of the rental inspection program on a March council agenda. Harmon opposes the rental inspection ordinance.

So now, if you donate to a campaign because you don’t like the opposition’s ideology your money is turned away. But if you give a donation to a campaign for bribes, expectations and favors that is OK? We are screwed up in this Country. Candidates are either corrupt or stupid and I am not sure which is worst anymore.

Did anyone notice the Jan Marx quote on the Caren Ray door hanger?

Weird…

It’s significant when a challenger out raises an incumbent.

Just a small clarification:

The actual money she raised is $10,109. ($9,809 this reporting period and $300 earlier).Jan’s total contributions reported include a $2,000 loan to herself and $300 ‘non-monetary’ contribution from Todd Brown, owner of SLO Brew, for use of his patio for a fundraiser on 9/17.

The actual money raised by Heidi is $11,712 (all this reporting period).Heidi’s total contributions include a $1,000 loan to herself and $59 ‘non-monetary’ contribution. So not including loans and gifts, Heidi raised over $1,600 more than Jan which has to make Jan nervous.

In Jan’s email/newsletter blast, she includes all $50 donations to boost the number of total donations she lists. (There were 29 – $50 donations) She did this to make it seem she has more support than Heidi. But the SLO Municipal Code states that only contributions “greater than $50” are to be itemized. The multitude of $50 donations received by Heidi are not included in the number of donors listed by Jan. This was a manipulative tactic – Jan’s treasurer has never itemized the $50 donations in previous filings over the years.

Other acts of desperation:

She trashed Heidi on our neighborhood website nextdoor . com here: http://www.slorentalinspection.com/blog/trash-talk-on-nextdoorcom

She flipped her stance on the Rental Inspection ordinance two days after a commentary that calls her out was published in New Times.

Just a week earlier, she was vigorously supporting it! In her video on SaveSLO.com she says students have told her they are HAPPY about the inspections and she supports the ordinance.

Desperate people do desperate things.

After she is elected she will commit again to the Rental Inspection Ordiance because it means more money for the City. Money money money, makes the world go round,

What’s up with you Marx? You didn’t show this much concern when you insulted the Pearl Harbor veterans when you refused to fly the flag at half staff on Pearl Harbor Day…obviously one that doesn’t live in infamy in your mind. Get real.

Maybe because she and her husband moved to Canadian during the Vietnam War and refused to service and honor!

“Marx previously voted for and promoted the controversial ordinance, but amid outrage over the regulation, she asked city staff to place a review of the rental inspection program on a March council agenda. Harmon opposes the rental inspection ordinance.” And Kevin Rice, whose cash campaign payment is at issue, is the actual force behind the initiative to repeal the ordinance (he got some attys to front for him in public since it would be radioactive with his name on it). Hmn. Don’t suppose there’s any connection between Rice’s sudden love for the younger leftie and her promise to undo the ordinance, do you? Single issue politics at its best, it would seem.

And after the election, no changes will be made!

Two leftist liberals attack each other over campaign cash…classic.

If these are our choices it’s a little like choosing which nut ought to run the asylum…

That’s definitely what’s going on in Morro Bay!

I take Marx’s word, who is better than she to know about donations that are not on the up and up?

One can bet Marx’s doesn’t think any of her developer friends donations were questionable.

Marx appears petty and desperate if this is the biggest beef she has with Harmon.

Let’s hear about issues.

She’s just adopting tactics from the Presidential campaign………
