Black man allegedly beaten during racist attack in Pismo Beach

By JOSH FRIEDMAN

Pismo Beach Beach police are searching for four white males who allegedly assaulted a black man in an unprovoked, racist attack earlier this month.

The city of Pismo Beach learned of the attack on Thursday through a letter to the editor in the Tribune. City officials then contacted the police department to open an investigation and to take the necessary steps to bring justice to the victim, a city news release states.

Detectives have begun collecting video evidence, contacting local businesses and searching for witnesses. Police are attempting to contact the victim and the victim’s family in order to hold the assailants accountable.

“Racism, violence and hate are not welcome in Pismo Beach,” the city says. “Those that violate the community will be found and prosecuted.”

In the letter to the editor, Vallejo resident Ed Atkins said he was celebrating his birthday in Pismo Beach with his daughter and her boyfriend, who is black. Four white racists spotted the mixed-race couple while they were walking at Pomeroy Avenue and Dolliver Street. The white males beat his daughter’s boyfriend bloody and swollen on the sidewalk in front of Brad’s Restaurant, Atkins wrote. [Tribune]

Anyone who has photos, videos or information related to the incident is asked to contact the Pismo Beach Police Department at (805) 773-2208.

Never Ever tell anybody you want to be treated like a King especially in Los Angeles ….but in Pismo I don’t see it meaning anything at all

Im not sure I quite get the gest of some of the comments here?

Are you second guessing the attack? As though it never happened? Just because a Black Man did not call the cops? In These days and times? Do you seriously think HE would be thinking he would have been treated fairly? Not only that, he was probably in shock! AND then you have the issue that he was in Whiteville. HE comes to visit, gets attacked and you are shocked he doesn’t go cry to the police in Whiteville? Wow.

I hope they find those idiot low thinking cavemen, and put them in front of a Black Judge.

I’m second guessing it, they didn’t call the police, didn’t call the paramedics (even though he was “Beaten Bloody”), the man and his daughter were both White why didn’t they call the police or paramedics? Nobody else saw it, no footage from any cellphones or cameras on any of the shops in that area. It also sounds like you’re disparaging Black Judges, insinuating they would be racist in making their judgements. You’re also disparaging Pismo Beach, Whiteville? really?

Not calling the paramedics is NOT surprising. It’s well known that most people avoid calling an ambulance or going to the hospital unless it is a life or death situation these days because of the perceived risk of catching Covid if you go to the hospital.

Would you be doubting this attack if it was a homeless man who attacked a young girl? Apparently some people refuse to believe anything that doesn’t fit in with their own narrow minded ignorant world view.

A violent crime reported with a letter to the editor 2 weeks after the incident…Doesn’t that seem odd, especially with family members present?

Really? “Whiteville”? When at any given time, about 80% of the visitors to Pismo are from the valley, and are predominantly Latino?

Racist much?

2019 Census Data: The racial makeup of Pismo Beach was 88% White

So while “whiteville” isn’t the most appropriate title, as far as population is concerned, there is no doubt Pismo is majority White.

Any data to back up your “predominantly Latino” anecdote about tourism in Pismo? My experience is most of the tourists to Pismo and Oceano from the valley, arrive via lifted diesel trucks, towing massive fifth wheels and ATVs — and they are not latino.

The title says “allegedly”, while the article seems to be pretty sure of the attackers AND their motivation. Is there no logic used in reporting? Integrity? Honesty? How did NOBODY see a brutal attack next to the busiest tourist attraction (Splash Cafe) on the central coast?

The smells of BS.

Something smells fishy here, why didn’t they report the attack to the police? According to KSBY (They’re on your side): “City officials say they were made aware of the attack after a “Letter to the Editor” was published in The Tribune on Thursday, April 22″. I’m so jaded by the news for the last couple of years I don’t believe anything unless there’s video.

The tribune article linked above says:

When reached for comment on the incident Tuesday, Pismo Beach Cmdr. Dan Herlihy confirmed a police report was made

So there was a violent assault in the most crowded part of Pismo during business hours and nobody called the police?

Why was this attack not reported at the time or was it?

they to give it time to ensure any downtown surveillance cameras had recorded over the alleged incident

They didn’t call the police?

Hi. Black people are afraid of the police; it’s been pretty widely reported. Thanks for your interest. Best wishes.

This is a local hate crime and could be affiliated with Domestic Terrorist groups as well. Hate Crime.
