Recognize wind energy’s attempts to manipulate SLO County residents

March 11, 2024

Opinion by REACT Alliance President Mandy Davis

Last Saturday, KSBY reported on REACT Alliance’s very successful Save Our Seas event in Morro Bay.

In response to an inquiry on the story from KSBY, Equinor, one of the three offshore wind lease holders, was quoted as saying, “We look forward to meeting community members and to gathering more feedback, exchanging ideas and addressing concerns over the coming years as we build Atlas Wind with an emphasis on safety, community input, and bringing significant benefits to our host communities.” There are some real issues with this statement and significant inconsistencies between their recent actions and their claims to be interested in public feedback.

First, we would like to point out a common device used by the wind companies to manipulate the public without most of us realizing we are being spun…it’s called the assumptive close and it was used in this public relations release very effectively. Notice they refer to the Atlas (yes, a new name) wind project as a fait de complis… a done deal as it were.

Let’s be incredibly clear on this point; the proposed project is precisely that. It is not a “done deal” as they and many of our local politicians including John Laird, Salud Carbajal, Dawn Addis, and Bruce Gibson would have you believe and have mistakenly stated in public. The permitting process is just beginning and would take years for this ill-conceived project to successfully pass through the regulatory and public opinion gauntlet.

Next on the list is Equinor/Atlas Wind’s claim to be interested and concerned with “meeting community members and gathering more feedback.” They have proven themselves to be otherwise.

For the last couple of years, the public has been treated to numerous “dog and pony” shows in an effort to convince the public that offshore wind would have no negative impacts to our environment, our lifestyles and our economy. Public participation was not encouraged and on several occasions was disallowed.

But here’s the kicker and proof of their disingenuous claims: In a 10-day period from Feb. 27 to March 7, the wind companies canceled three public engagement opportunities when they became aware of community action that would question their claims and put them on the spot publicly and idealistically.

There will be no long-term benefits to our communities as they claim. There will be no real interest in public feedback. Finally, the claims of concern for safety are disingenuous and are clearly displayed in communities where the wind industry has already taken hold and is negatively impacting the local marine environment and related economies.

We at REACT Alliance ask the public to think for yourselves, get the facts and recognize a big industry’s attempts to manipulate the public. Let’s protect our beautiful Central Coast both now and into the future.

REACT Alliance a local organization established to educate and inform the public about the issues involved with this project and offshore wind in general has a website that is a good place to start.

I find current in progress 2 year project to ” reclaim Morro Bay rocks to Morro Rock from the San Luis Bay Harbour Breakwateer via Barge and Giant Crane is in reality prepping the coast for improved cable management for the planned Off Shore Wind Power Projects – while framing the $$$ project to the public as a Chumash materials “repatriation ” project

review this article that details the Wind Power Intentions – seems a “done deal” search CalCoast News for “Will legislation squelch local input on industrializing Port San Luis?April 21, 2023”

I am beyond delighted to see we have an issue that unites all political factions here on our beautiful Central Coast. This is not about being “anti-science” or a “NIMBY”, this is about our sacred duty to protect this amazing place where we live and our own quality of life from those who are profit oriented at any cost to our environment and our future.

There are much better ways to generate power and we already know this. Actual GREEN power, that does not do extensive harm to our precious ocean life and our finances for the benefit of a few.

Let’s show these greedy opportunists that we are not pushovers for their corrupt agenda. We want clean, safe projects, with good paying local jobs, not gigantic boondoggles with fantastic price tags and no local input.

Wow first time I can agree with Francesca. Well said.

Who are you, and what have you done with the REAL Francesca?

? This has always been me. I am a lifelong environmentalist. This wind project is NOT environmentally friendly. It is environmentally devastating, starting with the “seismic testing” that is known for sterilizing the ocean down to the microbial level. A Norwegian fisherman being interviewed on YouTube stated that 3 years after it was done off their coast, there was still no life. Not even birds. Nothing for them to eat.

You may not be into the science that indicates that nukes are in that same unsafe, rip-off category, or that solar is proving to be quite valuable and making constant strides in efficiency and storage, but, evidently, we are in agreement on this particular wind adventure. There are more efficient ways to utilize wind than massive blades and putting them offshore is insane.

Perhaps we are not all “crazy hippies” after all. The solar installation at Carrizo Plains is doing great, wildlife is thriving over and under them. I like that project.

This ginormous rip-off windfarm, not so much.

Chuckle. Chuckle. Age old NIMBY. Get a life people —- wake up to the FACT that we are all human animals that REQUIRE energy for eating, keeping warm, keeping cool, manufacturing most everything, communications and travel. The energy has to come from SOME place —nuclear, gas, solar, wind, etc. Unless we all want to live fully off the grid and make our own consumer goods and communicate by drum and fire smoke, hunt and grow our food without help from the “outside world”, and protect ourselves with handmade weapons. Grow up and face reality. Also learn that EVERYTHING in our lives comes with risks. Just being in bed can be dangerous. Heaven forbid driving or taking a bus or train or flying or riding a bike. It is time for you to grow up, sadly unlike most all of our local, state and federal governmental “leaders” (?). You say solar is THE way to obtain power? Chuckle, chuckle! You had better educate yourself on the manufacturing and transportation chain that requires major sources of power. Study everything in our lives through the lens of “cradle to grave” of the supply chains. In reality, humanity is a useless parasite that consumes everything and battles one another for that privilege. And humans consider themselves as “intelligent”? FAR from it from everything I see humans doing. So ignorant, irresponsible, arrogant and destructive — the key traits of today’s elected and appointed so-called governmental leaders. The Central Coast wind energy projects are just one of an infinite number of clues in our society. So get off your high NIMBY horse and educate yourselves — maybe someday you could do some GOOD for humanity.

As a dumb human I can’t tell if you are for or not for the windmills Agree with you we all need energy and that people especially leaders aren’t that smart as they have and continue to kill people and gain more power over the people.

truthinscience, at least Mandy Davis puts her name behind what she writes and not hide behind some idiotic moniker. Also, if you knew anything about her, you would realize she has done more to protect the environment than you could ever do in 20 lifetimes….Chuckle. Chuckle…

Saro Rizzo No one was replying to you or talking to you.

“Please address the Policies, events and arguments, not the person.”

Some people can’t stand change. What is so bad about wind turbines?

First of all, I totally agree that we do not want nor need these windmills of the coast.

But I believe that for most people against this , its more a “not in my backyard” reason built with a lot of rationalization.

We have nuclear energy that is more efficient, clean, stable etc.

Let’s focus on storage/destruction/neutralization of nuclear waste materials.

Focus on the next generation, downsized nuclear plants, natural gas, supplemented perhaps by some solar. Also, look to the future of hydrogen, maybe in the next 30-50 years.

Geothermal is getting a lot of press lately, also so are promising new technologies for both cleaner energy generation and CO2 scrubbing/transformation/sequestration.

Yea, who needs wind energy. Let’s remain a 2nd world country while the rest of the world passes us by in energy and innovation. Let’s just keep burning coal or better yet let’s just go back to sitting round the campfire to stay warm.

If we relied on wind and solar that’s exactly where we’d be.

Interesting france is building new nuclear power plants like crazy and we do the opposite?

Bravo. Through the efforts of REACT, hopefully the general public will begin to actually question that “facts” that have been shared to date by the local, regional and state elected officials.

This project is a perfect example of GREEN WASHING or GREEN SHEEN – defined as marketing or advertising spin in which green PR and green marketing are deceptively used to persuade the public that an organization’s products/projects, aims and policies are environmentally friendly.

Shame all over you – Equinor AKA Statoil AKA Atlas Wind, Golden State Wind or Even Keel or Invenergy or ???

There are some amazing wind turbines that have come out in the last year that don’t need 100’ blades and enormous amounts of rare earth magnets. These are not them. If California insists on utilizing wind energy they should at least use the latest technology and not this type of dog and pony show they are pushing down our throats for the sole purpose of padding political resumes while causing more harm to the planet. Simply type ‘new wind turbine’ in youtube to see a plethora of better options for wind energy.

Again, say no to offshore wind energy projects. They are an eyesore and they are not environmentally friendly.

They will be so far out at sea you won’t even be able to see them.

At 60 miles, yes you won’t be able to see them from the beach. But, the FAA will likely require the windmills to have light beacons and you will be able to see those from the coastal hill tops.

The colossal wind turbine towers will be sited 20 to 30 miles offshore, not 60.

That’s not how a globe works…
