PG&E rescues 2-1-1 Hotline
December 18, 2009
CalCoastNews has learned that PG&E is stepping in with an emergency grant of $20,000 to keep the countywide 2-1-1 call system in business at least through June 1, 2010. Expect the official announcement to be made early next week.
The 2-1-1 Hotline number, designed to handle nonemergency calls as a referral to local social services, had been scheduled to shut down Dec. 31. due to a lack of funds. Almost 50,000 calls have been handled through the 2-1-1 number since its introduction in 2007. The county system is part of a larger state 2-1-1 structure, which has been awaiting federal funding for a number of years.
