Sarah Christie to resign from planning commission

December 15, 2009

imagesEXCLUSIVE: Sources tell CalCoastNews to expect controversial San Luis Obispo County Planning Commissioner Sarah Christie to announce her resignation at Thursday morning’s scheduled meeting.

Christie was originally appointed to the planning commission by 5th District county supervisor Jim Patterson following his election in 2004. Patterson has reportedly told friends that he’s asked for Christie to step down because she’s “too militant” in her positions.

Meanwhile, a large number of supporters are expected to attend Thursday’s meeting to show their support for Christie’s environmental and Smart Growth record.

I don’t buy it. What’s the catch? What office is she running for? Crook.

“Crook” constitutes libel. I hope you can back that statement up.

Pretty loose with your language. What do you mean by ‘crook’. Whether she is resigning on her own volition or being fired for misrepresenting her boss’s attitudes- neither makes her a crook. I think you should either retract your comment or explain it.

Surely this must contravene someone’s right to have everything exactly the way they want it all the time and to never be annoyed by anything.

What a freaken happy day,I almost got up from my desk and jumped for joy.

Send her packing and Patterson too!

Now SLO County is poised to become the next Stockton.

Another wacko bites the dust. Patterson is next.

You may be correct. Patterson is potentially handing the 3rd District seat to the POPR’s anointed one on a silver platter. It’s about as dumb a move as he could have made.

I am not sure I understand.

I believe she is getting axed to help Patterson appeal to the *middle*. I believe she is responsible for the narrowness of Patterson’s victory last time. Regular people — if there are any in the 5th district — simply cannot get behind her politics.

My “read” is that he is shedding her to make himself a stronger re-election candidate.

How can Patterson be stronger by demonstrating weakness? If he would just stand up for the character and the votes of his sitting commissioner instead of forcing her out, he could argue truthfully that she is the most able commissioner in the last 30 years, an asset to the 3rd District, and an asset to the county. But that would potentially be confrontational, at least to POPRs, and everybody knows that the last thing Jim wants is a confrontation.

1) He is stronger be recognizing the needs and desires of his constituents.

B) He is being stronger by addressing change.

Finally) He is making himself a stronger candidate for re-election. He can’t help his district if he can’t get re-elected. The last election was a squeaker, and could easily have gone the other way. Finding a more-centrist planning commissioner will appeal to lots centrist voters; whereas Christie appeals to a small fringe.

Jim doesn’t stand a chance next election no matter what color tie he wears. Just ask Charlie & Andy.

Why don’t you file to run? You sound like you’ve got your head on straight, and wouldn’t be swayed by threats.

Glad to see her go, she had an agenda going in that was far from balanced

No one has balanced views. No such thing on Earth. What we hope for is having representatives who will listen to all sides of an issue and make a decision based on what seems to be best for the greatest good. As we so often see (SLO city council, DeVaul appeal judge) those sitting on their high horses have made up their minds before even hearing the arguments. This reminds me of the “Don’t confuse or bore me with the facts” demeanor that lessons our democratic process.

So your comment is without merit. We get balance by having different Supes appoint those who represent their attitudes and thereby get a variety of positions. Since ‘the little guy and public at large’ usually get no representation against the juggernaut of three piece suits and money-grubbing special interests having someone there with a pro public interest basis was a thrill. I hope her replacement will not cave in to the dark side.

I think that was a typo. Christie’s “too brilliant” NOT “too militant.”

SLO County begs to have more people of Christie’s calibre in leadership roles. Unfortunately, the hicks tend to kill or scare off the more talented prospects. So, lets all celebrate leadership mediocrity bordering on downright incompetence.

Way to go, Jim.

What a loss to the county. Our greedy, selfish and monied special interests who would pave over paradise to make a buck will rejoice. Her keen sense and thoughtful response to the myriad issues confronting planning here will be sorely missed. I wish this article were a hoax but CCN is never wrong.

What’s amazing is how little attention Joe Sixpack pays to the way the countryside is converted to ticky-tacky to line developers’ pockets, and how government is usually a full partner in that cynical trade because it has a direct conflict of interest (tax revenues, campaign contributions, etc). You can see people like Christie as a modest counterbalance to all that.

It is too bad that her delivery was an excuse by many to dismiss the message.
