Lucia Mar votes to send out 74 layoff notices

May 11, 2010

Lucia Mar school district trustees voted 5-2 Tuesday night to send out final layoff notices to 74 employees, including more than 50 teachers and 10 counselors. [Tribune]

Trustees Erik Howell and Georgie O’Connor voted against the layoffs.

The district faces a $5 million cut from its $52 million general fund budget in the 2010-11 school year. Trustees may decide at a future meeting to lay off nearly two dozen classified employees. The personnel cuts would save Lucia Mar about $2.3 million.

This week was the deadline, as required by state law, for issuing the layoff notices.  The employees would be let go at the end of the school year, though the district could hire them back at the beginning of the next school year.

That’s amazing that they can lay off 50 teachers and still teach all the kids. I find that hard to believe. I say leave the teachers and cut the fat on the top.

I wonder if there are any reductions in district office employees or staff? I also wonder if the Lucia Mar trustees have any benefits that cost the school district monies that they could be spending on schools instead of things like healthcare insurance for the trustees or any other perks.
